In this paper, we analyse and present mechanical dynamic characteristics of a micro-machined vibrating silicon ring gyroscope which can measure angular velocities about three orthogonal axes. The ring gyroscope has a ring connected to the gyroscope main body by support-ligaments which are arranged with cyclic symmetry. The natural modes of its vibration can be distinguished into the in-plane motion and the out-of-plane motion which are coupled by the gyro-effect due to the rotation of the gyroscope main body. The equations of motion, the response to angular velocities, and the relationships between the natural modes of vibration are derived and compared with the previous studies for the design of a micro three-axis ring gyroscope.
This paper discusses a new model for investigating the micro-mechanical behavior of beam-like structures composed of various elastic moduli and complex geometries varying through the cross-sectional directions and also periodically-repeated along the axial directions. The original three-dimensional problem is first formulated in an unified and compact intrinsic form using the concept of decomposition of the rotation tensor. Taking advantage of two smallness of the cross-sectional dimension-to-length parameter and the micro-to-macro heterogeneity and performing homogenization along dimensional reduction simultaneously, the variational asymptotic method is used to rigorously construct an effective zeroth-order beam model, which is similar a generalized Timoshenko one (the first-order shear deformation model) capable of capturing the transverse shear deformations, but still carries out the zeroth-order approximation which can maximize simplicity and promote efficiency. Two examples available in literature are used to demonstrate the consistence and efficiency of this new model, especially for the structures, in which the effects of transverse shear deformations are significant.
This is the pre-study to pile up the basic technique for the electro-discharge machining in the field of micro-drilling. The machined chips are flowed out from the machining area by the flow arisen from the high speed rotation of the electrode. The cylindrical shape electrode, whose diameter is 0.5mm, is clamped by the three point clamping type clamper and the clamper is attached at the front shaft of the high speed rotating DC motor. The current for machining is controlled by pulse width modulation technique and the machining conditions such as frequency and duty ratio are changed to find out the effect of the variables for machined results.

The micro laser module was designed and prepared to deliver the light to the HAMR head. It consists of laser diode, photo diode and actuator to realize stable light delivery even though the head is fluctuated during the disk rotation. The optical evaluation was carried out with the actual distance between the light source and HAMR head with a range of reflectivity and it was found that the incident angle could be controlled within ${\pm}0.125^{\circ}$ to maintain same intensity into the HAMR head. It was also confirmed that the designed micro laser module is thermally stable without any severe effect on the magnetic head.
Current Optical Disk drive is dominating high share gradually in information storage device market through development of great skill. These technologies can achieve not only improvement of transmission speed but also elevation of recording/reproduction technology. However, these present state cause not only the increase of vibration in structural viewpoint but also problem of serious noise while the ODD becomes high speed/high performance. Specially, air-born noise is being bigger than structural-born noise as disk rotation speed increases gradually. The object of this research is that reduce the air-born noise in optical disk drive by reducing a quantity of flow by using a miniaturized muffler. The micro muffler is a miniaturized muffler. The muffler is used widely by solution to reduce air-born noise which is generated by flow. According to frequency band of the noise source, it can be applied by muffler of various forms. In this research, we examined the noise characteristics of the micro muffler and applied it by noise reduction solution of the ODD. It could get an excellent noise reduction in high frequency band by using the micro muffler than the opened case through the decrease of an inner flow. But it could not get a noise reduction in low frequency band through the decrease of an inner flow.

A lot of studies are undergoing on the magneto-optical (MO) properties of patterned magnetic systems for the reason that they have potential application to information technology such as ultrahigh-speed computing. Moreover, they can be considered as the future candidates for high-density MO storage devices. Not only the technical aspects, but there have been also tremendous interests in studying their properties related to the fundamental physics. The MO Kerr-rotation effects (both in reflected and the diffracted modes) and the magnetic force microscopy (MFM) are very useful techniques to investigate the micromagnetic properties of such periodic structures. Hence, in this study, we report on the MO properties of bilayered Cobalt (Co)/ nickel (Ni) micro-patterned anti-dot arrays. Such a ferromagnetic structure was made by sequentially depositing co (40 nm)/Ni (5 nm) bilayer on a Si substrate. The anti-dot patterning with hole diameter of $1{\mu}m$ was done only on the upper Co layer using photolithography technique, while the Ni underlayer was kept uniform. The longitudinal Kerr rotation (LKR) of the zeroth- and the first-order diffracted beams were measured at an incidence of $30^{\circ}$ by using a photoelastic modulator method. The external magnetic field was applied perpendicularly to the reflected and the diffracted beams using an electromagnet capable of a maximum field of ${\pm}5$ kOe. Significantly, it was observed that the LKR of the first-order diffracted beam is nearly 4 times larger than that of the zeroth-order beam. The simulated results for the hysteresis loops matched qualitatively well with the experimentally obtained ones. In conjunction with the LKR, we also investigated the magnetic-domain structure by using a MFM system, which were analyzed to elucidate the origin of the enhanced MO rotation.

The flapping-wing micro air vehicle (FW-MAV) in this study utilizes the cambered wings made of quite flexible material. Similar to the flying creatures, the present cambered wing uses three different materials at its leading edge, vein, and membrane. And it is constrained in various conditions. Since passive rotation uses the flexible nature of the wing, it is important to select an appropriate material for a wing. A three-dimensional fluid-structure interaction solver is developed for a realistic modeling of the cambered wing. Then a parametric study is conducted to evaluate the aerodynamic performance in terms of the elastic modulus of leading edge and vein. Consequently, the elastic modulus plays a key role in enhancing the aerodynamic performance of FW-MAVs.
Turbulent boundary-layer over a micro-riblet film(MRF) was investigated experimentally. The MRF has sharp V-shaped micro scale grooves of $300{\mu}m$ in width and $176.8{\mu}m$ in height. Particle image velocimetry(PIV) system was employed to measure velocity fields of flow over the MRF coated plate. Flow over a smooth plate was also measured for comparison. The PIV measurements were taken in the streamwise wall-normal planes at Re$\theta$= 985 and 2342. Vortex structures of the flow were analyzed by extracting the swirling strength as an unambiguous vortex-identification criterion. As a result the number of spanwise vortices with clockwise(negative) rotation decreases rapidly in the near-wall region(y<0.2h), but decreases slowly in the outer region(0.2h

The performance of the precision micro-positioning 4-dof stage is presented. The compact design utilizes the monolithic mechanism to achieve the translation in the Z axis and rotation in the $\theta$ z, $\theta$ x and $\theta$ y axes with high stiffness and high damping. Hysteresis, nonlinearity, and drift of the piezoelectric effects are improved by incorporating the sensors in a feedback control. Experiments demonstrate that the micro-positioning stage is capable of 2nm resolution over the travel range of 25$\mu\textrm$ m in the Z axis, 0.0l7 $\mu\textrm$ rad resolution over the 170$\mu\textrm$ rad in the $\theta$ z and 0.011 $\mu\textrm$ rad resolution over the $\mu\textrm$ rad in the $\theta$ x and $\theta$ y axes. The cross-axis interferences among the axes are at a noise range. This stage is available for positioning error compensation of the XY stage with large stroke.
