Prospective Elementary School Teachers' Perception on Using the History of Korean Mathematics (예비 초등교사의 한국수학사 활용에 대한 인식)

  • This study analyzed the perception of prospective elementary school teachers in relation to using the history of Korean mathematics. The results of this study showed that the pre-service teachers realized using the history of Korean mathematics more importantly than the history of mathematics. They thought that the contents of the history of Korean mathematics should be increased in mathematics education and pre-service teacher education. The participation experience in teacher education about the history of Korean mathematics had a positive effect on the perception of pre-service teachers. Finally, this paper asserted that teacher education is the key to the teacher perception on and using of the history of Korean mathematics.

  • The history of mathematics is an important part of Chinese highschool mathematics curriculum. The current 2003 revised curriculum in China refers directly to the history of mathematics and presents it as one of the optional series. Moreover, they publish separate history textbooks for mathematics according to the 2003 revised curriculum. The importance of the history of mathematics in Chinese highschool curriculum, which was revised in 2017, has increased. This study aims to analyze the contents of the highschool curriculum and mathematics history textbooks, which were revised in 2003. Based on the results of analysis, we make suggestions on the use of mathematics history for teaching mathematics in Korea.

  • It has been always the issue to discuss 'how we teach mathematics' for the mathematical learning. As for an answer to this, it was suggested to use the history of mathematics. The reason is simple that is, the education of mathematics requires to understand mathematics and to know the history of mathematics is effective for mathematical understanding. In particular, the history of algebra was discussed to some extent as an illustration. This study focuses on the history of geometry from this point of view. We review the history of geometry by comparison in terms of three criteria from the origin of geometry to modem differential geometry in the middle of the 20th century, which are backgrounds (inner or outer ones), characterizations (approach, method, object), influences to modem mathematics. As an application of such historical data to the education of mathematics, we pose the problem to determine the order of instruction in mathematics.

History of mathematical modeling on the Black-Out Game (흑백게임의 역사와 수학적 모델링)

  • Black-out Game(Lightout, Merlin Game, ${\sigma}$+Game) is an interesting game on the chessboard, when you click a button with black or white color, it changes color of itself and other buttons who shares edges. With this rule, we win the game when we have a chessboard with all same color after we click some of the buttons of it. Pretty much of research has been made on founding the winnable strategy for this type of game. In this paper, we first introduce a history of mathematical modeling on this game. Then we develop an algorithm to offer a winnable blackout game of any size. Our tools also show our new algorithm works. Finally, we show how we can use this game in mathematics education.

  • The International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM) will next be held in Seoul, Korea from August 13th to 21st 2014. The ICM, currently hosted by the International Mathematical Union, has a history spanning a period of one hundred years and is traditionally held every four years. Felix Klein has often been credited with formulating the concept of the ICM, however George Cantor not only initially propagated the idea of forming a mathematical society in Germany, but also proposed organizing an international mathematical union. This study has endeavored to investigate the early period of development of the ICM. Specifically, this paper has studied the development of early 20th century mathematics through changes in the formulaic language of the ICM, the number of participants, the number of presentations, the nationality of plenary speakers, and the changes in sessions.

On the Teaching of Algebra through Historico -Genetic Analysis (역사-발생적 분석을 통한 대수 지도)

  • History of mathematics must be analysed to discuss mathematical reality and thinking. Analysis of history of mathematics is the method of understanding mathematical activity, by these analysis can we know how historically mathematician' activity progress and mathematical concepts develop. In this respects, we investigate teaching algebra through historico-genetic analysis and propose historico-genetic analysis as alternative method to improve of teaching school algebra. First the necessity of historico-genetic analysis is discussed, and we think of epistemological obstacles through these analysis. Next we focus two concepts i.e. letters(unknowns) and negative numbers which is dealt with school algebra. To apply historico-genetic analysis to school algebra, some historical texts relating to letters and negative numbers is analysed, and mathematics educational discussions is followed with experimental researches.

  • This study is about the law of cosines. It dealt with its historical origin and the developmental process of the age of Greece, Islam and Modern age. Especially, we tried to find out how the extension of the law of cosines for spherical triangles and tetrahedron from the law of cosines for plane was done. On the basis of this analysis, we investigated how the law of cosines was generated and proved it through the logical demonstration and mathematical induction. This made us find out the mathematical meaning of mathematical concepts.

  • This paper is investigated conception and methodology of data selection, cleaning, integration, transformation, reduction, selection and application of data mining techniques, and model evaluation during procedure of the knowledge discovery in database (KDD) based on Mathematics. Statistical role and methodology in KDD is studied as branch of Mathematics. Also, we investigate the history, mathematical background, important modeling techniques using statistics and information, practical applied field and entire examples of data mining. Also we study the differences between data mining and statistics.

  • In this paper, we study the generalized Kirchhoff type equation in the presence of past and finite history $$\large u_{tt}-M(x,t,{\tau},\;{\parallel}{\nabla}u(t){\parallel}^2){\Delta}u+{\normalsize\displaystyle\smashmargin{2}{\int\nolimits_0}^t}\;h(t-{\tau})div[a(x){\nabla}u({\tau})]d{\tau}\\\hspace{25}-{\normalsize\displaystyle\smashmargin{2}{\int\nolimits_{-{\infty}}}^t}\;k(t-{\tau}){\Delta}u(x,t)d{\tau}+{\mid}u{\mid}^{\gamma}u+{\mu}_1u_t(x,t)+{\mu}_2u_t(x,t-s(t))=0.$$ Under the smallness condition with respect to Kirchhoff coefficient and the relaxation function and other assumptions, we prove the expoential decay rate of the Kirchhoff type energy.

Development of mathematical learning materials through geometric problems and the invention of pentominoes (기하학적 문제와 펜토미노의 발명을 통한 수학 학습에서의 자료 개발)

  • Recently, dissection puzzles such as pentominoes have been used in mathematics education. But they are not actively applicable as a tool of problem solving or introducing mathematical concepts since researches about the historical background and developments of mathematical applications of such puzzles have not been effectively accomplished. In this article, in order to use pentominoes in mathematical teaming effectively, we first investigate geometric problems related to dissection puzzles and the historic background of development of pentominoes. And then we collect and classify data related to pentomino activities which can be applicable to mathematics classes based on the 7th elementary school national curriculum. Finally, we suggest several basic materials and directions to develop more systematic learning materials about pentominoes.
