This study aims to explore central and peripheral beliefs of mathematics teachers in the context of teaching and learning. For this purpose, this study analyzed teacher noticing of 8 mathematics teachers who are in-service in terms of mathematical beliefs using video-clips of math lessons. When the teachers in the video-clips seemed to have a teaching and learning problem, teachers who adopt noticing critized the classroom situation by reflecting his or her own mathematical beliefs and suggested alternatives. In addition, through noticing analysis, teachers' mathematical beliefs reflected in specific topics such as student participation in teaching and learning were compared to reveal their individual central and peripheral beliefs. Through these research results, this study proposed a model that extracts the central and peripheral beliefs of math teachers from the constraints of the teaching and learning context using noticing analysis. Additionally, it was possible to observe the teacher decision-making and expertise of mathematics teachers.

The University of Education trains the teachers who are experts in the education and expects them to achieve the purpose of the education in the field. The goal of this study is to apprehend the characteristics of the belief and the faith of the elementary teacher and of the university student who are preliminary elementary teachers, about the mathematics and the mathematical teaching and learning and also to figure out what differences those belief and faith shows as the year goes by. In order to find the characteristics of the belief and faith, we have set up three research-problems and have found the answers of that by analyzing the replies of several multiple choice questions and essay questions we have invested for. We also have collected several information through the interviews and inspection. As a result, we have analyzed and charted the outcome of the statistical analysis of the answers about each questions and have discussed the remarkable features of those results which showed significant changes in the belief of elementary teachers about the mathematics and mathematical teaching & learning after taking the courses of "Life & Mathematics".
This study examines the effect that mathematics teaching efficacy has on teacher's mathematics education practices. Data was obtained from 220 kindergarten teachers who responded to the questionnaire, the mathematics teaching efficacy belief instrument (developed by Enochs). Among these 220 teachers, upper and lower 5 % of the teachers on mathematics teaching efficacy belief were chosen to identify the influence of mathematics teaching efficacy on mathematics activity style, teaching strategy, and teacher-child interaction. The results indicated that teacher's interest in math, previous participation in mathematics teaching method course mainly influenced mathematics teaching self-efficacy. Teachers with high mathematics teaching efficacy belief preferred providing mathematical learning activity than providing other learning areas. They employed effective mathematics teaching strategy such as high and medium cognitive distancing strategy and established positive teacher-child relationship. Implications for teacher education and professional development activities were discussed.
This paper compares and analyzes mathematics teachers' understanding of students' mathematical comprehension after experiences with the Cognitively Guided Instruction (CGI) or the Development of Mathematical Ideas (DMI) teaching strategies. This report sheds light on current issues confronted by the educational system in the context of mathematics teaching and learning. In particular, the declining rate of mathematical literacy among adolescents is discussed. Moreover, examples of CGI and DMI teaching strategies are presented to focus on the impact of these teaching styles on student-centered instruction, teachers' belief, and students' mathematical achievement, conceptual understanding and word problem solving skills. Hence, with a gradual enhancement of reformed ways of teaching mathematics in schools and the reported increase in student achievement as a result of professional development with new teaching strategies, teacher professional development programs that emphasize teachers' understanding of students' mathematical comprehension is needed rather than the currently dominant traditional pedagogy of direct instruction with a focus on teaching problem solving strategies.
This study was to investigate the practice of the teachers who changed their teaching subject to Mathematics from other subjects. Teacher, A who had traditional belief and Teacher, B, non-traditional belief were chosen for the study through the questionnaire in Sep. 2014. The result indicated that Teacher, A in traditional belief showed teacher-centered teaching but Teacher, B in nontraditional belief showed inconsistent way of teaching in comparison to the original perspective. The later said she could not teach students as she wanted to teach because of the lack of knowledge of teaching as a math teacher. The difficulties Teacher, A encountered were: to handle too many works beyond teaching and to teach too many contents to cover without having enough time to prepare. Teacher, B didn't know how to teach students math in a constructivism way. They asked to offer them more in-service training program to develop their expertise for teaching mathematics.
This paper examines and presents descriptions of 12 prospective primary teachers' views on the nature of mathematics in USA. All the participants were elementary teacher candidates enrolled in the same mathematics method courses. Interview data show that the prospective primary teachers possess two kinds of views on the nature of mathematics: primarily traditional and even mix of traditional and nontraditional beliefs in terms of Raymond's (1997) belief criteria. Implications for teacher education were discussed at the end of the paper.
The mathematics instructional beliefs of a teacher include the exterior mathematics instructional beliefs and the internal mathematics instructional beliefs. These two kinds of beliefs are formed in two kinds of different situations. The situated theory thinks that beliefs are related with the situations; so, the two kinds of beliefs are showed in the different situations. The internal instructional mathematics beliefs effect on the actual mathematics instruction, they ought to be noticeable.
This study examines the effects of consumer beliefs for food certifications on the behavioral intentions and the behavioral intention biases to purchase the certified seafoods by a subjective probability model which is on the basis of the mathematical probability model and the covariance model. The food certifications used on this study are 'Organic foods', 'Traceability system of food products' and. 'HACCP'. The representative foods of fishery products on this study is seasoned laver. The current study showed the following results. First, consumers have more than two different beliefs each for all certifications which are the subjects of this study. The beliefs of the certifications have an impact on the consumers when they consider to buy the certified seafood products. Second, consumers try to persuade by themselves to ensure that their particular belief about the certification could lead to a purchase the seafood products. Consumer beliefs of the "environmentally friendly production" on the organic foods certification is an important factor as much as the "guarantee of food safety" belief making a positive purchasing behavior intentions(PBI) bias for the organic seafood products. Consumers also have a positive PBI bias for certified seafood products in all certifications as long as a certification is considered to "guarantee the transparency of the food distribution process" as its belief. 'Traceability system' was the only one which didn't generate a positive PBI bias from the belief of "guarantee of food safety" out of three certifications.
The purpose of this study through ethnographic inquiry is to describe how an elementary teacher teaches mathematics with understanding. The ways that teachers'beliefs affect instructional activities, what means understanding from the view of cognitive psychology, and ethnographic research tradition were reviewed to anchor theoretical background of this study. A third-grade teacher and his 45 students were selected in order to capture vivid and thick descriptions of the teaching and learning activities of mathematics. Three major sources of data, that is, participant-observation with video taping, formal and informal interviews with the teacher and his students, and a variety of official documents were collected. These data were analyzed through two phases: data analysis in the field and after the fieldwork. According to data analysis, ‘teaching mathematics with understanding’ was identified as the teachers central belief of teaching mathematics. In order to implement his belief in teaching practices, the teacher made use of three strategies: ⑴ valuing individual student's own way of understanding, ⑵ bring students' everyday experiences into mathematics classroom, and ⑶ lesson objectivies stated by students. It is suggested for future research that concrete and specific norms of mathematics classroom for the improvement of mathematics understanding are needed to be identified and that experienced and skillful teachers' practical knowledge should be incorporated with theories of teaching mathematics and necessarily paid more attention by mathematics educators.
Mathematical Problem solving has been the focus of a considerable amount of research over past 30 years. But nowadays problem solving is being beginning to be of less interest to mathematics education researchers. Moreover, mathematics teachers have an urgent need to be provided with well-documented informations about "teaching of(expecially, via) problem solving" though following research issues :ⅰ) the role of the teacher in a problem-centered classroom, ⅱ) what actually takes place in problem-centered classrooms, and iii) groups and whole classes' problem solving rather than individuals. This paper intends to give some informations about practice of teaching mathematical problem solving in elementary school.ry school.
