The major objective of this paper is to empirically examine the effect of process maturity on the performance of industrial R&D projects. Process maturity, a fundamental concept of the Capability Maturity Model developed by Software Engineering Institute, represents the essential of Total Quality Management (TQM). Based on literature, our research model constructs process maturity in terms of structured process, goal setting and controlling, metrics, and process learning; and links it to the R&D performance that consists of technical, commercial and managerial successes. The model also includes firm size as a moderator of different effects that process maturity may have across firms. Measures for process maturity are based on the best practices identified in literature. Data are obtained from 77 successful R&D projects carried out by Korean manufacturing firms. Multiple regression and t-test are used to test proposed hypotheses. Findings are as follows. (1) In the R&D process, process maturity partially contributes to the performance of R&D projects. More specifically, goal setting and controlling-related practices drive both technical and commercial successes, while process learning-related practices drive commercial success. In contrast, traditionally emphasized elements such as structured process or metrics are found not to be significant. (2) The degree of process maturity is significantly higher in large firms. (3) Process maturity impacts on commercial success in the case of large firms, whereas it does on technical success in the case of small firms. The results imply that the TQM principles are partially associated with R&D performance, and the nature of benefit from high maturity could vary according to firm size.
With the successful arrival of quality free/open source software, open source ISD(Information System Development) projects have been drawing attention from academic researchers. However, there have been few efforts to examine the managerial aspect of open source ISD projects. This study use a case research methodology to explores the management of open source projects, especially from the perspective of behavior control. Through data analysis and discussion, the study found that various practices related to behavior control were exercised to obtain participants' shared goals, although specific instances vary in each case. This finding is contradictory to the views of some researchers who suggested open source ISD projects lack behavior control. For more comprehensive understanding, however, future research should also include controls of open source projects in terms of outcome control and self-control.

Ship's Bunkering Business is one of the essential businesses creating added values of the port as a hub for a stream of the international logistics. Regulatory considerations of ship's bunkering business should be made to create a more relevant system and stabilize the bunkering industry so that the ports may produce more substantial added values. This paper suggests revisions the Harbor Transport Business Act, the Marine Transport Act, putting forward an idea of unifying safety management systems, establishing a guideline for bunker quality managements, and changing the laws regarding any wrongdoings of bunker suppliers. In conclusion, in order to increase the managerial integrity of the bunkering operators, reasonable burdens should be distributed across the government, refinery companies and ship-owners to achieve a more balanced state and enable long-term development to advance the business at issue, following a step-by-step approach to amend the contract practice, the laws and the systems.
The primary purpose of this research is to develop and test a model that explains the process of how In-store experiences (physical environmental quality, personal interaction, product experience) through perceived risks and brand attitude influence purchase intention. Perceived risks and brand attitude are proposed as mediators that make a significant impact on purchase intention. Through structural equation modeling using 235 consumers who visited the experience store in IT Industry, we find that In-store experiences influence perceived risks, brand attitude and then enhance purchase intention. Thus, IT companies should make every effort to create In-store value for visited consumers. Based on these results, managerial implications for experience store operation and marketing strategy are discussed. Finally, limitation for this research and further research issues are suggested.
An aging population and increasing consumer demand for high-quality and innovative new products are key drivers for growth in the cosmeceutical industry. Cosmeceuticals are defined as products with biologically active ingredients that have a measurable effect on the user. This study explored the effects of shopping orientation and store attributes on impulse buying behavior for cosmeceuticals. We obtained 437 usable questionnaires from university students who had purchased cosmeceutical products. Data analysis was conducted using confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation modeling analysis via AMOS 18.0. The findings were: 1) hedonic shopping orientation and convenience shopping orientation had positive effects on product efficacy and promotion of the cosmeceutical store 2) brand shopping orientation had a positive effects on store atmospheric, skin care service, and brand of the cosmeceuticals store and 3) product efficacy and promotion of store attributes had a direct effect on impulse buying behavior for cosmeceuticals. Consumers who tended to enjoy the shopping to refresh themselves and to experience convenient shopping were likely to purchase cosmeceuticals impulsively, which mediated by the store attributes (product efficacy and promotion). Therefore, we confirmed partly causal relationships among the shopping orientation, store attributes, and impulse buying behavior of cosmeceuticals. Both managerial and theoretical implication for practitioners and researchers were discussed for managing product information more efficiently along with promotion strategies to trigger cosmeceuticals consumers in the context of shopping.
This study investigated relationships between the importance and satisfaction of rice-based menu selection attributes at family restaurants. For data collection, a total of 250 copies of questionnaires were distributed to 4-year college students who had an experience of a rice-based menu at casual dining restaurants, and finally 221 surveys (88.4%) among them were analyzed by using SPSS Win ver. 11.5. Twenty selection attributes were used to test the level of importance and satisfaction for rice-based menu. The factor analysis identified six dimensions of the importance of rice-based menu selection attributes; variety of items, menu information, recommendation & atmosphere, food quality, preferred menu, and price. Also, five dimensions of satisfaction were identified as nutrition & taste, menu information, preferred menu & atmosphere, variety of items, and cooking. Canonical correlation analysis revealed that preferred menu factor of importance was highly correlated with preferred menu and restaurant atmosphere factor of satisfaction of rice-based menu selection. The managerial implications of these results for rice-base menu selection attributes are as follows: There seems to be a need to develop a variety of rice-based menus, because rice-based menus tend to be considered as an additional menu, not a main course. Aggressive marketing and communication strategies are necessary to position rice-based menu as a main course for college students and as a major maket segment to family restaurants.
For the past decade, although there have been many studies which examined factors influencing the extent of EDI systems implementation, it is very hard to find out studies which directly investigated what the effectiveness of EDI systems are, and which factors contribute to the successful implementation of EDI systems. In this regard, this research aims to explore for the factors which constitute the effectiveness of EDI systems as perceived, based on a survey from 202 companies. The major steps of the current research are as follows. First, in order to identify important factors constituting the effectiveness of EDI systems, previous research related to the effectiveness of EDI systems was reviewed and analyzed. Second, individual items which can be considered as candidates to represent the effectiveness of EDI systems were derived from this previous research review, and a survey questionnaire was developed using those derived items. Based on the developed survey questionnaire, a pretest was administered at several domestic business firms with experiences of EDI systems. Third, survey questionnaires were distributed to and collected from the 202 companies which experienced EDI implementation. Accordingly, this research derived out five factors constituting the effectiveness of EDI systems from the result of a multivariate data analysis: strategic advantage, time reduction in business process, accuracy improvement, cost reduction, and improvement of business process quality. It was also interesting to find that the factors of EDI effectiveness are divided into three levels, similarly to three levels of the Anthony's hierarchical model of organization(Anthony, 1965): strategic, managerial, and operational levels. Furthermore, from the levels of derived factors, we developed a conceptual model which explains the possible causal relations of those factors in a hierarchical manner.
Main concerns of IT project managements are concentrated on the output control and process management. IT project, however, is difficult to measure the quality of achievement, because it produces invisible and intangible outputs. Many studies have been carried on to quantify the intangible aspects of process management. However, most of them have been focused on the technological aspects. This study measures the priority of factors to manage IT project by applying the IT-BSC and PMBOK method. Established indexes include the factors of managerial, social and future-oriented perspectives to check the different aspects of project management over the technical factors. This study uses AHP method for quantitative measurement. This study can be meaningful because of following reasons. First, this study re-arranges IT project management evaluation indexes by balanced scorecard. Second, this model includes human factors of developers and users who are directly related to the project development and operation. Third, important items of each stakeholder have been separated, and the weights of each item have been quantified to have fixed values.
The purpose of this study was to provide basic materials needed to enhance quality of organizational life by identifying the improvements of labor union management in the perspective of general hospital organization management. The subjects of this study were 428 employees in 8 Hospitals in Metro Capital including Seoul. Materials were collected from administrators, nurses and medical technicians in target hospitals from November 10 to November 30, 2006 through survey questionnaires. The main results of this study were as follows: 1. The commitment level of the subjects according to their characteristics was higher in older employees than the younger ones, large family to support than small family to support and those who had higher positions in labor union. 2. The commitment level of the subjects according to the Job and role related variables were higher those who had higher satisfaction level to their job, role conflict in all hospitals. 3. The commitment level of the subjects according to union related variables, variables jointly controlled by union and employer was statistically significant positive correlation. 4. The results of multiple regression analysis shows that formal and informal socialization, satisfaction with the labor union's were all found as important antecedents of labor union commitment. 5. The results of AMOS shows that structure characteristics of hospital, Job and manager satisfaction, socialization were statistically significant labor union satisfaction. The satisfaction level of labor union was statistically significant labor union commitment To summarize study results, the level of commitment in labor union depends on job satisfaction, managers' attitudes, union satisfaction factors, their colleagues attitudes toward union. Therefore hospital managers should have democratic and flexible attitudes toward labor union. Additionally, as formal and informal socialization is important determinant in union commitment, hospital managers should have countermeasures to enhance the colleague attitude and job satisfaction level of hospital employees. Moreover, as managerial factors of the principal of hospital influence union commitment directly, the attitudes of hospital managers toward union and transparency of hospital management should be improved.
Purpose - This paper examines the explanatory power of the agency theory in the determination of cash holdings for Korean retail firms. If the agency theory holds, a firm with strong corporate governance structure tends to have low cash holdings. A strong governance structure makes the CEO of this firm to behave in the interests of shareholders and thus the CEO has low incentive to stockpile cash holdings, which can be easily diverted for the CEO's own managerial purposes. We investigate this relationship between corporate governance structure and cash holdings, by using corporate governance scores as a proxy variable that captures the effectiveness of corporate governance mechanism. Research design, data, and methodology - We adopt the sample of publicly listed retail firms in KOSPI market from 2005 to 2013. Financial and accounting statements are gathered from the WISEfn database. We also use the corporate governance scores published by Korean Corporate Governance Service. The relationship between the corporate governance scores and cash holdings is cross-sectionally estimated based on the ordinary least square method. This estimation method is widely accepted in the existing literature. The sample of large conglomerates, Chebol, and the remainder firms are separately examined as well, to account for the distinctive internal financing environment in these large conglomerates. Results - We mainly contribute to the extant literature by providing empirical evidence against the agency theory of cash policy. Unlike the prediction of agency theory, we confirm statistically insignificant or even positive correlations between the set of corporate governance scores and cash-asset ratios. Almost all the major corporate governance attributes including total score, shareholder rights, board structure, and the quality of information disclosure do not show negative correlations with cash holdings, which poses a strong challenge to the validity of the agency theory in the determination of retail firms' cash holdings. Conclusions - This study presents interesting empirical results with respect to the cash policy in Korean retail firms. Consistent to prior studies, I verify that the agency theory only limitedly explains the level of cash holdings. Future studies may obtain more robust results by examining a longer sample period.
