  • $N_{9}$-Formylharman, 1-carbomethoxy-$\beta$-carboline and perlolyrine with an unidentified alkaloid ($C_{10}H_{13}NO_{2}$, $M^{+}$ 179.094) have been isolated from the fruits of Lycium chinense Miller (Solanaceae) and characterized on the basis of chemical and physical evidence.

  • Further investigation of Lycium chinense fruits gave a mixture of (6'-O-palmitoyl)- and (6'-O­stearoyl)-$\beta$-sitosterol-3-O-$\beta$-D-glucopyranoside (1) and two glycolipids, 1-O-(9Z, 12Z, 15Z-octa­decatrienoyl)-2-O-(9Z, 12Z, 15Z-octadecatrienoyl)-3-O-$\beta$-D-galactopyranosyl glycerol (2) and 1-O-(9Z, 12Z-octadecadienoyl)-2-O-(9Z, 12Z, 15Z-octadecatrienoyl)-3-O-$\beta$-D-galactopyranosyl glycerol (3). These compounds were newly isolated as constituents of L. chinense.

Strength Properties of Boxthorn(Lycium chinense Mill) Fruit-Stem Joints (구기자 열매와 과병 접합부의 강도 특성)

  • The strength of the connecting joint of boxthorn(Lycium chinense Mill) fruits to tree twigs was determined experimentally at several pulling angles(0$^{\circ}$, 15$^{\circ}$, 30$^{\circ}$,45$^{\circ}$and 60$^{\circ}$) and at different harvesting seasons from August to November 1999 using an universal testing machine. The detachment force of mature fruits of boxthorn decreased as the pulling angle increased and varied with the harvesting season. The detachment force however did not gradually decreased as the harvesting season advanced due to difference of maturity of fruits from one harvesting season to another. Among three varieties of boxthron Cheongyang gugija Cheongyang native and Cheongyang #2, the maximum detachment force was 1.24 N at the pulling angle of zero degree. The highest detachment forve(1.29 N) of mature fruits of boxthorn appeared at the harvesting season of August, 1999.

A Convenient HPLC/ELSD Method for the Quantitative Analysis of Betaine in Lycium chinense

  • In order to facilitate the quality control of betaine from the fruits of Lycium chinense, we have developed a rapid and simple method for quantitative determination. Determination was achieved on a Discovery C18 column with an isocratic solvent system of 0.32% perfluoropentanoic acid aqueous-acetonitrile at a flow-rate of 0.5 mL/min and detected an ELSD. The method was reproducible with intra- and inter-day variations of less than 6% (R.S.D). The recoveries were in the range of 90.01~100.05%. The method turned out to be fast and simple, furthermore, to have a good selectivity and sensitivity for the quantity determination of betaine in the fruits of L.chinense.

  • Detachment rate of mature fruits of the Lycium chinense Mill with various frequency, amplitude, and shaking time using an experimental vibratory system was analyzed. The experimental vibratory system was designed such that the frequency, amplitude, and shaking time could be controlled easily. The detachment rate increased as the frequency increased at constant amplitude and increased as the amplitude increased at constant frequency. The contents of the detached immature fruit, however, also increased as the frequency and amplitude increased, which was undesirable for the detachment efficiency considering the only mature 900 rpm and amplitude of 35 m for the shaking time of three seconds.

  • Phytochemical investigation of Lycium chinense fruits led to isolation of a new pyrrole compound. The structure of this compound was confirmed as a 5-methoxymethyl-lH-pyrrole-2-carbaaldehyde, a new natural product, by interpretation of 1D ($^1H$, $^{13}C$) and 2D (HMQC, HMBC) spectroscopic data along with HRMS and IR spectroscopic data.

  • The symptom of anthracnose of chinese matrimony vine (Lycium chinense Mill) was darkbrown to black, water­soaked lesions with acervuli on fruits. Field survey revealed that the incidence rate of anthracnose ranged from $0.8\%\;to\;23\%$. to Colletotrichum gloeosporioides Penz and C. dematium(Fr.) Grove were identified as the causal organisms of the disease. C. gloeosporioides and C. dematium produced severe symptoms on fruits resulting in complete necrosis, but produced no or mild symptoms on leaves and stems of chinese matrimony vine. Of three isolates of C. dematium, isolate I and isolate III caused severe infection on immature fruits and isolate I was the most pathogenic on mature fruits of the plant. Isolates II of C. dematium caused relatively severe lesions on pepper fruit, but C. gloeosporioides was pathogenic on apple fruit.

Antihepatotoxic zeaxanthins from the Fruits of Lycium chinense

  • A $CHCl_3$:MeOH extract of the fruit of Lycium chinense Mill. (Solanaceae) was found to afford significant protection against carbon tetrachloride-induced toxicity in primary cultures of rat hepatocytes. Subsequent activity-guided fractionation resulted in the isolation of zeaxanthin and zeaxanthin dipalmitate as antihepatotoxic components. Incubation of injured hepatocytes with zeaxanthin dipalmitate reduced the levels of glutamic pyruvic transaminase (GPT) and sorbitol dehydrogenase (SDH) released from damaged cells to 60.5% and 76.3% of those released from untreated controls, respectively. Zeaxanthin also reduced the levels of GPT and SDH to 68.5% and 61.3% of the levels of those released from the untreated contro. The results confirm the hepatoprotective activities of zeaxanthins. Antihepatotoxic activities of zeaxanthins are comparable to that of silybin.

Multivariate statistical analysis of the comparative antioxidant activity of the total phenolics and tannins in the water and ethanol extracts of dried goji berry (Lycium chinense) fruits

  • Antioxidant activity in water and ethanol extracts of dried Lycium chinense fruit, as a result of the total phenolic and tannin content, was measured using a number of chemical and biochemical assays for radical scavenging and inhibition of lipid peroxidation, with the analysis being extended by applying a bootstrapping statistical method. Previous statistical analyses mostly provided linear correlation and regression analyses between antioxidant activity and increasing concentrations of phenolics and tannins in a concentration-dependent mode. The present study showed that multiple component or multivariate analysis by applying multiple regression analysis or regression planes proved more informative than linear regression analysis of the relationship between the concentration of individual components and antioxidant activity. In this paper, we represented the multivariate analysis of antioxidant activities of both phenolic and tannin contents combined in the water and ethanol extracts, which revealed the hidden observations that were not evident from linear statistical analysis.
