Initial irreversible capacity (IIC) can be defined by means of the initial intercalation Ah efficiency (IIE) and the initial irreversible specific capacity at the surface (IICs) with the linear-fit range of the intercalation so as to precisely express the irreversibility of an electrode-electrolyte system. Their relationship was IIC = Qc - Q$_{D}$ = (IIE$^{-1}$ - 1) Q$_{D}$ + IICs in the linear-fit range of IIE. Here, Qc and Qd signify charge and discharge capacity, respectively, based on a complete lithium ion battery cell. Charge indicates lithium insertion to carbon anode. Two terms of IIE and IICs depended on the types of active materials and compositions of the electrode and electrolyte but did not change with charging state. In an ideal electrode-electrolyte system, IIE and IICs would be 100%, 0 mAh/g for the electrode and mAh for the cell, respectively. These properties can be easily obtained by the Gradual Increasing of State of Charge (GISOC).OC).
This study was investigated to improve peformance of carbon negative electrode for lithium ion secondary battery. The carbon electrode was prepared by mixing with graphitic carbon material, natural graphite, and nongraphitic carbon material, petroleum cokes, which was heat-treated at $700^{\circ}C$ for l hour. Its electrochemical and charge-discharge characteristics were tested according to mixing ratio of different two types of carbon material. The carbon electrode prepared with various mixing ratio showed both charateristcs of two different types of carbon materials and the best characteristics as carbon electrode was demonstrated at mixing ratio of 1:1.

The electrolyte wetting phenomena in the electrode of lithium ion battery is studied numerically using a multiphase lattice Boltzmann method (LBM). When a porous electrode is compressed during roll-pressing process, the porosity and thickness of the compressed electrode are changed, which can affect its wettability. In this study, the change in electrolyte distribution and degree of saturation as a result of varying the compression ratio are investigated with two-dimensional LBM approach. We found that changes in the electrolyte transport path are caused by a reduction in through-plane pore size and result in a decrease in the wettability of the compressed electrode.
A porous nickel-tin nano-dendritic electrode, for use as the anode in a rechargeable lithium battery, has been prepared by using an electrochemical deposition process. The adjustment of the complexing agent content in the deposition bath enabled the nickel-tin alloys to have specific stoichiometries while the amount of acid, as a dynamic template for micro-porous structure, was limited to a certain amount to prevent its undesirable side reaction with the complexing agent. The ratios of nickel to tin in the electro-deposits were nearly identical to the ratios of nickel ion to tin ion in the deposition bath; the particle changed from spherical to dendritic shape according to the tin content in the deposits. The nickel to tin ratio and the dendritic structure were quite uniform throughout the thickness of the deposits. The resulting nickel-tin alloy was reversibly lithiated and delithiated as an anode in rechargeable lithium battery. Furthermore, the resulting anode showed much more stable cycling performance up to 50 cycles, as compared to that resulting from dense electro-deposit with the same atomic composition and from tin electrodeposit with a similar porous structure. From the results, it is expected that highly-porous nickel-tin alloys presented in this work could provide a promising option for the high performance anode materials for rechargeable lithium batteries.
$M_2GeO_4$ (M = Co, Fe and Ni) was synthesized as an anode material for lithium-ion batteries and its electrochemical characteristics were investigated. The $Fe_2GeO_4$ electrode exhibited an initial discharge capacity of $1127.8mAh\;g^{-1}$ and better capacity retention than $Co_2GeO_4$ and $Ni_2GeO_4$. A diffusion coefficient of lithium ion in the $Fe_2GeO_4$ electrode was measured to be $12.7{\times}10^{-8}cm^2s^{-1}$, which was higher than those of the other two electrodes. The electrochemical performance of the $Fe_2GeO_4$ electrode was improved by coating carbon onto the surface of $Fe_2GeO_4$ particles. The carbon-coated $Fe_2GeO_4$ electrode delivered a high initial discharge capacity of $1144.9mAh\;g^{-1}$ with good capacity retention. The enhanced cycling performance was mainly attributed to the carbon-coated layer that accommodates the volume change of the active materials and improves the electronic conductivity. Our results demonstrate that the carbon-coated $Fe_2GeO_4$ can be a promising anode material for achieving high energy density lithium-ion batteries.

Lithium secondary batteries using lithium metal count electrode are easy to use and to analyze the specific characteristics of working electrode. Nevertheless, during the charge operation internal electrical short circuit could be caused by the dendritic growth of lithium. The cell failure by the short circuit depends on the condition of separator such as constitutive material and thickness. To prevent the cell failure caused by the dendritic growth of lithium, the electrochemical properties of the cell of lithium metal count electrode were evaluated for four different kinds of separator. Among the tested separators, GMF (glass micro-fiber filter, $300{\mu}m$) was the most promising one because it could effectively prevent the cell failure during the charge. The cell using GMF separator had relatively low impedance. Generally the cell using thicker separator than $50{\mu}m$ could effectively avoid the cell failure by internal short circuit and had the good cycleability. The highest rate capability by the signature method was acquired in the case of GMF separator.
The present article is concerned with the application of the Monte Carlo simulation to electrochemistry of lithium intercalation from the thermodynamic view point. This article first introduced the fundamental concepts of the ensembles, and Ising and lattice gas models in statistical thermodynamics for the Monte Carlo simulation in brief. Finally the Monte Carlo method based upon the lattice gas model was employed to analyse thermodynamics of the lithium intercalation into the transition metal oxides. Especially we dealt with the thermodynamic properties as the electrode potential curve and the partial molar internal energy and entropy of lithium ion in the case of the $LiMn_2O_4$ electrode, and consequently confirmed the utility of the Monte Carlo method in the field of electrochemistry of the lithium intercalation.
With increasing interest in flexible electronic devices and wearable appliances, flexible lithium ion batteries are the most attractive candidates for flexible energy sources. During the last decade, many different kinds of flexible batteries have been reported. Although research of flexible lithium ion batteries is in its earlier stages, we have found that developing components that satisfy performance conditions under external deformation stress is a critical key to the success of flexible energy sources. Among the major components of the lithium ion battery, electrodes, which are connected to the current collectors, are gaining the most attention owing to their rigid and brittle character. In this mini review, we discuss candidate materials for current collectors and the previous strategies implemented for flexible electrode fabrication.

The new type polymer electrolyte composed of polyacrylonitrile(PAN) baed polymer electrolyte contain LiClO$_4$-EC/PC and LiPF$\sub$6/-EC/PC were developed for the weightless and long or life time of lithium polymer battery system with using polyaniline electrode. The gel type electrolytes were prepared by PAN at different lithium salts in the glove box. We prepared for polymer electrolyte with knife casting method. The minimum thickness of PAN gel electrolyte for the slim type is about <400∼500$\mu\textrm{m}$. These gel electrolytes showed good compatibility with lithium electrode. The test cell of Li/polymer electrolyte/Lithium cobalt oxide solid state cell which was prepared by different lithium salt was researched by electrochemical technique. Resistance of polymer electrolyte which consist of LiClO$_4$ is more less than that of LiPF$\sub$6/ and cycle life is more longer than that of LiPF$\sub$6/.
Lithium ion batteries have been broadly used in various applications to our daily life such as portable electronics, electric vehicles and grid-scale energy storage devices. Significant efforts have recently been made on developing electrode materials for lithium ion batteries that meet commercial needs of the high energy density, light weight and low cost. In this review, we summarize the principles and recent research advances in cathode and anode materials for lithium ion batteries, and particularly emphasize electrode material designs and advanced characterization techniques.
