As the linear scheduling method has been used since the Empire State Building linear schedule in 1929, it is being applied in various fields, such as construction and manufacturing. When addressing concurrent critical paths occurring in a linear construction schedule, empirical researches have stressed resource management, which should be applied for optimizing workflow, ensuring flexible work productivity and continuous resource allocation. However, work relationships have been usually overlooked in making the linear schedule from an existing network schedule. Therefore, this research analyzes the previous researches related to the linear scheduling model, and then proposes a method that can be applied for adopting the relationships of a network schedule to the linear schedule. To this end, this research considers the work relationships occurring in changing a network schedule into a linear schedule, and then confirms the activities movement phenomenon of linear schedule due to workspace change, such as physical floors change. As a result, this research can be used as a basic research in order to develop a system generating a linear schedule from a network schedule.

Linear scheduling method limits to present works of work breakdown structure as a form of lines and was often developed manually. In other words, linear schedule could not utilize activity, work breakdown structure, and etc. information of network schedule such as CPM(Critical Path Method) and has been used only for reporting or confirming construction master plan. Therefore, it is necessary to develop system which can automatically generating the linear schedule based on the network schedule having many accumulated and useful construction schedule information. Thus, this research has an effort to establish data process model, data flow diagram, and data model in order to make linear schedule. In addition, this research addresses the system solution structure, user interface class diagram and logic diagram, and data type schema. The results of this paper can be used as a preliminary research for developing linear schedule generating system prototype by utilizing the network schedule information.

Unlike building construction projects, where the activity is repeatedly carried out in a limited area, civil engineering projects such as roads and railroads are carried out in a linear type in a horizontal working space over several tens of kilometers. Each activity is managed with a station number that has a unit of distance from the starting point to the end point. For this reason, since the work location information of the activity is a major management factor, the Gantt chart system that expresses only schedule information may have limitations. In this study, authors propose a method for constructing a linear schedule chart that can simultaneously express schedule information indicating the start and finish dates and location information indicating the start and end positions of each activity, and develop a system for generating a linear schedule chart. In the study, the coordinate axes of the linear schedule chart consisted of distance and date values on the X and Y axes, respectively, and each activity was expressed as a symbol that can infer the type of work to increase the visibility of the linear schedule chart compared to the simple bar chart method. The linear schedule chart generation system was reviewed for practical applicability by utilizing the actual schedule data of bridge structures in a railroad project.

From the supplier's point of view, we examine the existence of a Pareto superior pricing schedule for one wholesaler with multiple retailers. In the case of multiple retailers, an order quantity pricing schedule should depends on the retailer's underlying characteristics. But identification of each retailer's characteristics may be impossible; rather, the wholesaler knows only the probability distribution of each retailer's characteristics. Perfect price discrimination is impossible because a separate pricing schedule cannot be tailored for each retailer. Some degree of discrimination is possible only by using a non-linear pricing schedule. From this analysis based on the non-linear pricing, we conclude that there is no Pareto superior pricing schedule for the case of multiple retailers.

Domestic leading construction companies has been establishing and performing TACT scheduling method, similar to linear scheduling model such as line of balance and repetitive schedule, and etc. in which repetitive construction works are involved like high-rise building. Linear scheduling model has been researched as a visual scheduling method presenting the work space and time information. Likewise scheduling constraints of CPM network such as finish-to-finish, start-to-start, finish-to-start, start-to-start, linear scheduling model also has the relationships constraints, namely boundary conditions, between activities. It is especially necessary to define the boundary conditions of the activities' relationships in order to apply the linear scheduling model to be compatible with the network schedule. Therefore, this research considers the boundary conditions between activities for establishing the linear scheduling model. This paper also applies the proposed boundary conditions to TACT schedule and then deduces the main considerations in order to establish and perform TACT schedule.

The linear scheduling method or line-of-balance (LOB) is a popular choice for projects that involve repetitive tasks during project execution. The method, however, produces deterministic schedule that does not convey a range of potential project outcomes under uncertainty. This results from the fact the basic scheduling parameters such as crew production rates are estimated to be deterministic based on single-point value inputs. The current linear scheduling technique, therefore, lacks the capability of reflecting the fluctuating nature of the project operation. In this paper the authors address the issue of how the variability of operation and production rates affects schedule outcomes and show a more realistic description of what might be a realistic picture of typical projects. The authors provide a solution by providing a more effective and comprehensive way of incorporating the crew performance variability using a Monte Carlo simulation technique. The simulation outcomes are discussed in terms of how this stochastic approach can overcome the shortcomings of the conventional linear scheduling technique and provide optimum schedule solutions.

Since the building construction works are repeated vertically in a limited space, there is not a great need for the location information of each activity in the schedule management. On the other hand, civil engineering works such as road and railway projects consist of a large number of earthworks, long bridges, and long tunnels. These types of work should be controlled in a horizontal space according to the linear axis of several tens of kilometers. In other words, since most of the activities are managed in the unit of distance from the start point to the end point, it is possible to improve the efficiency of the schedule management by linking the location information of the activity with the schedule data in the schedule management system. This study presents a methodology for creating a linear schedule chart specific to a project with horizontal work space and compares the convenience with the existing Gantt chart. In addition, the methodology of linking linear schedule chart to the 4D CAD system, which is a typical BIM technology in the construction phase, is presented to improve the usability of BIM. The practical applicability of the proposed methodology was verified statistically.

Horizontal construction projects such as oil and gas pipeline projects typically involve repetitive-work activities with the same crew and equipment from one end of the project to the other. Repetitive scheduling also known as linear scheduling is known to have superior schedule management capabilities specifically for such horizontal construction projects. This study discusses on expanding the capabilities of repetitive scheduling to account for the variance in production rates and visual representation by developing an automated alignment based linear scheduling program for applying temporal and spatial changes in production rates. The study outlines a framework to apply changes in productions rates when and where they will occur along the horizontal alignment of the project and illustrates the complexity of construction through the time-location chart through a new linear scheduling model, Linear Scheduling Model with Varying Production Rates (LSMVPR). The program uses empirically derived production rate equations with appropriate variables as an input at the appropriate time and location based on actual 750 mile natural gas liquids pipeline project starting in Wyoming and terminating in the center of Kansas. The study showed that the changes in production rates due to time and location resulted in a close approximation of the actual progress of work as compared to the planned progress and can be modeled for use in predicting future linear construction projects. LSMVPR allows the scheduler to develop schedule durations based on minimal project information. The model also allows the scheduler to analyze the impact of various routes or start dates for construction and the corresponding impact on the schedule. In addition, the graphical format lets the construction team to visualize the obstacles in the project when and where they occur due to a new feature called the Activity Performance Index (API). This index is used to shade the linear scheduling chart by time and location with the variation in color indicating the variance in predicted production rate from the desired production rate.

We consider a discrete event dynamic system called periodic job shop, where an identical mixture of items called minimal part set(MPS) is repetitively produced in the same processing order and the primary performance measure is the cycle time. The precedence relationships among events(starts of operations) are represented by a directed graph with rocurront otructure. When each operation starts as soon as all its preceding operations complete(called earliest starting), the occurrences of events are modeled in a linear system using a special algebra called minimax algebra. By investigating the eigenvalues and the eigenvectors, we develop conditions on the directed graph for which a stable steady state or a finite eigenvector exists. We demonstrate that each finite eigenvector, characterized as a finite linear combination of a class of eigenvalue, is the minimum among all the feasible schedules and an identical schedule pattern repeats every MPS. We develop an efficient algorithm to find a schedule among such schedules that minimizes a secondary performance measure related to work-in-process inventory. As a by-product of the linear system approach, we also propose a way of characterizing stable steady states of a class of discrete event dynamic systems.
