This work investigated the effects of different conductive agents on the electrochemical properties of anodes. SiOx possesses high theoretical capacity and shows excellent cycle performance; however, the low initial coulombic efficiency and poor electrical conductivity limit its applications in real batteries. In this study, electrodes were fabricated using two different conductive agents, and the resulting physical and electrochemical properties were analyzed. SEM observations confirmed the formation of a CNT conductive network throughout the electrodes, while the electrical conductivity contributed to the electrode was confirmed by impedance measurements. Thus, the electrode fabricated with the CNT conductive agent showed greater capacity and superior cycle performance than did the electrode fabricated using the DB conductive agent.
In this study, a spherical carbon composite material containing nano-silicon was synthesized using hydrothermal synthesis, and coated with petroleum pitch to prepare an anode material to investigate the electrochemical characteristics. Hydrothermal synthesis was performed by varying molar concentration, and the pitch was coated using THF as an organic solvent to prepare a composite material. The physical properties of anode materials were analyzed using SEM, EDS, XRD and TGA, and the electrochemical performances were investigated by cycle, C-rate, cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance tests in 1.0 M LiPF6 electrolyte (EC : DMC : EMC = 1 : 1 : 1 vol%). The pitch-coated silicon/carbon composite (Pitch@Si/C-1.5) with sucrose of 1.5 M showed a spherical shape. In addition, a high initial capacity of 1756 mAh/g, a capacity retention ratio of 82% after 50 cycles, and an excellent rate characteristic of 81% at 2 C/0.1 C were confirmed.
Lithium ion batteries (LIBs) are the state-of-the-art technology among electrochemical energy storage and conversion cells, and are still considered the most attractive class of battery in the future due to their high specific energy density, high efficiency, and long cycle life. Rapid development of power-hungry commercial electronics and large-scale energy storage applications (e.g. off-peak electrical energy storage), however, requires novel anode materials that have higher energy densities to replace conventional graphite electrodes. Germanium (Ge) and silicon (Si) are thought to be ideal prospect candidates for next generation LIB anodes due to their extremely high theoretical energy capacities. For instance, Ge offers relatively lower volume change during cycling, better Li insertion/extraction kinetics, and higher electronic conductivity than Si. In this focused review, we briefly describe the basic concepts of LIBs and then look at the characteristics of ideal anode materials that can provide greatly improved electrochemical performance, including high capacity, better cycling behavior, and rate capability. We then discuss how, in the future, Ge anode materials (Ge and Ge oxides, Ge-carbon composites, and other Ge-based composites) could increase the capacity of today's Li batteries. In recent years, considerable efforts have been made to fulfill the requirements of excellent anode materials, especially using these materials at the nanoscale. This article shall serve as a handy reference, as well as starting point, for future research related to high capacity LIB anodes, especially based on semiconductor Ge and Si.

A purification process was performed for the application of natural graphite as an anode material. The influence of the structural change and impurity content of graphite according to the process on the anode electrochemical characteristics was investigated. Natural graphite was chemically/physically purified by acid-treatment which used different amounts of solution of ammonium fluoride/sulfuric acid in the same ratio and thermal treatment used different temperatures (800~2500 ℃). Acid-treatment had limitation to remove impurities, and identified that all impurity contents was removed except some traces of atom such as Si by after progressed thermal-treatment until 2500 ℃. The anode materials characteristic of graphite treated by purification process was improved, and changes in the structure and impurity contents affected dominantly the capacity, rate property and initial Coulombic efficiency. Consequently, the complex purification process improved the graphite structure and also the performance of lithium ion battery by controlling the excessive formation of solid electrolyte interphase and expanding Li+ insertion space originated from the effective removal of impurities.

In this study, Tin oxide thin film for secondary battery was deposited on Pt/Ti/Si(100). It was fabricated by r.f. reactive sputtering with Tin metal target. At constant power (130W), pressure (Base 5$\times$10$^{-6}$ Torr, working 5$\times$10$^{-3}$ Torr) and at room temperature, it was fabricated by Ar/O2 gas ratio. After deposition, we got AFM & SEM to investigated surface of thin films and had XRD to find crystalline of thin films. Charge/discharge characteristics were carried out in 1M LiPF$_{6}$ , EC:DMC = 1:1 liquid electrolyte using lithium metal at room temperature.

For the past few decades, as part of efforts to protect the environment where fossil fuels, which have been a key energy resource for mankind, are becoming increasingly depleted and pollution due to industrial development, ecofriendly secondary batteries, hydrogen generating energy devices, energy storage systems, and many other new energy technologies are being developed. Among them, the lithium-ion battery (LIB) is considered to be a next-generation energy device suitable for application as a large-capacity battery and capable of industrial application due to its high energy density and long lifespan. However, considering the growing battery market such as eco-friendly electric vehicles and drones, it is expected that a large amount of battery waste will spill out from some point due to the end of life. In order to prepare for this situation, development of a process for recovering lithium and various valuable metals from waste batteries is required, and at the same time, a plan to recycle them is socially required. In this study, we introduce a nanoscale pattern transfer printing (NTP) process of Li2CO3, a representative anode material for lithium ion batteries, one of the strategic materials for recycling waste batteries. First, Li2CO3 powder was formed by pressing in a vacuum, and a 3-inch sputter target for very pure Li2CO3 thin film deposition was successfully produced through high-temperature sintering. The target was mounted on a sputtering device, and a well-ordered Li2CO3 line pattern with a width of 250 nm was successfully obtained on the Si substrate using the NTP process. In addition, based on the nTP method, the periodic Li2CO3 line patterns were formed on the surfaces of metal, glass, flexible polymer substrates, and even curved goggles. These results are expected to be applied to the thin films of various functional materials used in battery devices in the future, and is also expected to be particularly helpful in improving the performance of lithium-ion battery devices on various substrates.

Tin dioxide, $SnO_2$, is applied as an anode material in Li-ion batteries and a gas sensing materials, which shows changes in resistance in the presence of gas molecules, such as $H_2$, NO, $NO_2$ etc. Considerable research has been done on the synthesis of $SnO_2$ nanostructures. Nanomaterials exhibit a high surface to volume ratio, which means it has an advantage in sensing gas molecules and improving the specific capacity of Li-ion batteries. In this study, $SnO_2$ nanostructures were grown on a Si substrate using a thermal CVD process with the vapor transport method. The carrier gas was mixed with high purity Ar gas and oxygen gas. The crystalline phase of the as-grown tin oxide nanostructures was affected by the oxygen gas flow rate. The crystallographic property of the as-grown tin oxide nanostructures were investigated by Raman spectroscopy and XRD. The morphology of the as-grown tin oxide nanostructures was confirmed by scanning electron microscopy. As a result, the $SnO_2$ nanostructures were grown directly on Si wafers with moderate thickness and a nanodot surface morphology for a carrier gas mixture ratio of Ar gas 1000 SCCM : $O_2$ gas 10 SCCM.
In lithium-ion batteries(LIB), the development of electrolytes had mainly focused on the characteristics of lithium cobalt oxide($LiCoO_2$) cathode and graphite anode materials since the commercialization in 1991. Various studies on compatibility between electrode and electrolytes had been actively developed on their interface. Since then, as they try to adopt silicon and tin as anode materials and three components(Ni, Mn, Co), spinel, olivine as cathode materials for advanced lithium batteries, conventional electrolyte materials are facing a lot of challenges. In particular, requirements for electrolytes performance become harsh and complicated as safety problems are seriously emphasized. In this report, we summarized the research trend of electrolyte materials for the electrode materials of lithium rechargeable batteries.

All-solid-state thin-film lithium-ion batteries are important in the development of next-generation energy storage devices with high energy density. However, thin-film batteries have many challenges in their manufacturing procedure. This is because there are many factors, such as substrate selection, to consider when producing the thin film multilayer structure. In this study, we compare the fabrication and performance of all-solid-state thin-film lithium-ion batteries with a $LiNi_{0.5}Mn_{1.5}O_4$ cathode/LiPON solid electrolyte/$Li_4Ti_5O_{12}$ anode structure using stainless steel and Si substrates with different surface roughness. We demonstrate that the smoother the surface of the substrate, the thinner the thickness of the all-solid-state thin-film lithium-ion battery that can be made, and as a result, the corresponding electrochemical characteristics can be improved.

B-doped Si nanoparticles were synthesized by using inductive coupled plasma and specially designed double tube reactor, and their microstructures were investigated. 0~10 sccm of $B_2H_6$ gas was injected during the synthesis of Si nanoparticles from $SiH_4$ gas. Highly crystalline Si nanoparticles were synthesized, and their crystallinity did not change with increase of $B_2H_6$ flow rates. From SEM measurement, their particle sizes were approximately 30 nm regardless of $B_2H_6$ flow rates. From SIMS analysis, almost saturation of B in Si nanoparticles was detected only when 1 sccm of $B_2H_6$ was injected. When $B_2H_6$ flow rate exceeded 5 sccm, higher concentration of B than solubility limit was detected even if any secondary phase was not detected in XRD or HR-TEM results. Due to their high electronic conductivity, those heavily B-doped Si nanoparticles can be a potential candidate for an active material in Li-ion battery anode.
