  • The purpose of this study was to grasp the characteristics of composition regarding the material-centered integrated unit of environmental and natural studies, a science subject in Finland, to investigate a need for applying the material-centered integrated unit to the science curriculum of Korea. For the purpose, the study made an analysis on contents, inquiry activities, and visual materials (the most important in the elementary science curriculum and textbook composition), and it brought following results: First, as a result of analyzing the area of contents, the bicycle material-centered integrated unit comprised a large proportion of 44 pages (25.3%) of the whole 174 pages from the environmental and natural studies textbook for the third grade. The contents included such various concepts as traffic rules, safety, environmental protection and pollution, recycling and separate collection, tubes and triangular structures, wedges and screws, leverage, wheels, axles, gears, elasticity (spring), friction, and so on. Second, as a result of analyzing contents related to the thinking ability of inquiry activities, "expecting or confirming expectations" and "application" are included in every lesson, and one lesson is composed in such a way that students can study on bicycles as a practical material for their daily life and they can improve various thinking abilities. Third, as a result of analyzing the circumstances of inquiry activities, daily circumstances made up eight lessons (80.0%) and technical and social circumstances made up two lessons (20.0%) by focusing on bicycles, a material related to students' daily life. Fourth, as a result of analyzing visual materials, the percentage of pictures and photos was high at 53.4% and 45.2% respectively. As a result of analyzing the role of visual materials, the percentage of the illustrative role and explanatory-complementary role was high at 52.1% and 47.9% respectively. Lastly, as a result of analyzing from the epistemological view to interpret the relation between visual materials and students and the position of visual materials, the visual textbook materials were provided toward a way that students can decrease their feeling of epistemological separation in the three fields of ideational metafunction, interpersonal metafunction, and textual metafunction.

  • Within physical therapy education, there has been increased attention to curricula and course that emphasize problem solving, clinical reasoning, and synthesis of information across traditional discipline-specific boundaries. This article describes the development implementation, and outcomes of a problem-based learning course in Physical therapy. The course was designed to help students to integrate the various elements of a physical therapy curriculum and to enhance their abilities to respond to an ever-changing health care environment. An evaluation of the course by the first 50 students who completed it revealed both strengths and weaknesses. Students responded that the course enhanced their professional behavior, including interpersonal communication skills, team work, and follow-through with professional responsibilities. The learning package was developed by the authors and implemented to a college students during three weeks of the first semester of 2001. Most studies which conducted PBL module development were short period or temporary PBL package application and evaluation rather than a whole semester's. While, this study carried on partial integrated PBL curriculum development and application with recomposing content of the two subjects to one subject Physical therapy which includes four PBL packages. This package was developed from a simple concept to complex and partial integrated PBL curriculum application systematically variable learning methods such as discussion, practice, lecture, video. There are 2 classes, each class has 25 students, in the college. Each class has 5 small groups consisting 5 students. Two tutors proceeded discussion charging each class also, they used multiple methods and materials like tutorials, self-directed learning, lecture, and video. The package is 5 grades and 5 hours per week and the rate of discussion, lecture is 4, 1 respectively. One of the most change is the increase of interaction between students and tutors. Whenever students need information and suggestion, they can visit tutors who provide reading materials and guide for the direction of self learning. Therefore, this study describes the PBL package development process and application during one semester recomposing contents of two subjects to Physical therapy concepts. Besides, it will contribute to active application of existing each subject to tutors who intend to convert as PBL methods. The study has significant meaning to show potentiality of partially integrated PBL application, using systematic PBL package development from two subjects contents. However, when students' need of yearning is over the extent of Introduction of Physical therapy and Rehabilitation medicine, tutors should set learning extent. So, there is limitation to attain completely integrated PBL education within one subject, therefore, it is high lighted to proceed development of integrated curriculum to maximize learning effects of PBL. It is exected that partial integrated PBL package development and application will distribute to prosper excellent physiotherapist in practice.

And it was carried out to present a way to reduce the gap between boys and girls in technological problem solving ability. The subject was 833 middle school students in the third grade (boys: 423, girls: 410) whose schools are located in a megalopolis or more large area. And the instruments developed by Yong-Lyn Moon(2001) and in CRESST(1998) were used. The results of this study are as follows. First, it appeared that there were statistically meaningful differences at six items in multiple intelligence between boys and girls. The six items were bodily-kinesthetic intelligence, logical-mathematical intelligence, naturalistic intelligence, musical intelligence, interpersonal intelligence, and introspective intelligence. Second, in technological problem solving ability, it appeared that boys and girls showed statistically meaningful differences at self-regulation and problem solving strategy. Third, it appeared that logical-mathematical intelligence, linguistic intelligence, introspective intelligence, and natural intelligence had an effect on boys in the way of self-regulation and logic-mathematical intelligence, introspective intelligence, naturalistic intelligence, and linguistic intelligence did on girls. Fourth, it appeared that logical-mathematical intelligence, musical intelligence, and bodily-kinesthetic intelligence had an effect on boys in the way of problem solving ability and linguistic intelligence and musical intelligence had on girls. Fifth, it appeared that logical-mathematical intelligence did an effect on both sexes in drawing up the understanding of contents. On the basis of the results of this study, the area related to multiple intelligence directly or indirectly should be developed in the course of designing the primary and secondary curriculums to reduce the gap between boys and girls in multiple intelligence. With these efforts, the scholastic attainments gap caused by the difference of multiple intelligence will be overcome.

  • This study aimed to examine how prospective mathematics teachers (PMTs) perceive collaborative problem-posing (CPP) as a method to cultivate students' creativity and character in mathematics education. This is to propose the introduction of CPP at the stage of preparatory math teacher education as one of the ways to reinforce the creativity and character education capacity of PMT), and to attempt to be an opportunity to actively utilize CPP in math teaching-learning in the school field for the education of students' creativity and character. To achieve this objective, I designed PMTs taking the 'Educational Theories for Teaching Mathematics' course, required in the second year of university, to experience CPP tasks. Data were collected through questionnaires or interviews over three years on how PMTs recognized the CPP tasks as a tool to cultivate students' creativity and character in secondary schools. The results of the study are as follows. First, PMTs recognized regardless of their CPP experience that CPP might have a positive impact on improving students' ability to devise various ideas and that it positively influences students' attitudes toward building interpersonal relationships, including teamwork, respect, and consideration. Second, the experience of PMTs participating in the CPP made them more positively aware that CPP is effective in improving students' ability to elaborate on ideas. Third, the PMTs' experience of participating in CPP led to a more positive perception of the impact of CPP on the students' abilities and attitudes, namely, the students' ability to elaborate on ideas and their inner attitudes toward individuals, including honesty, fairness, and responsibility, and the attitude of students regarding logically presenting their opinions and making rational decisions. Finally, if there are downsides to the offline environment, an online environment may be more beneficial.

  • This projects was carried out under the assumption that an appealing leadership program would lead to students' increased leadership abilities. This leadership program is comprised of 16 materials based on seven factors of leadership for the gifted and talented. More than 46% of the gifted and talented have a positive response to leadership program, and some of these gifted and talented students (14.7%) reacted negatively. According to the result of the T-Test, a survey about leadership of gifted and talented, there are meaningful differences between before and after implementing this leadership program (p<.01). Especially, the leadership quality of the gifted and talented improved effectively in communication skills(p<.01), individualized considerations(p<.01), and interpersonal skills(p<.05). But there aren't statistical differences between the primary school students and the middle school students except leadership total score(p<.05) and communication skills(p<.01). Comprehensively, the primary school students scored slightly higher than did middle school students on the seven factors of leadership. So, we need an effective guide in planning a leadership program for middle school students.

The purpose of the study was to understand the relationship between core competencies and job performance for dental hygienists. The major core competencies of dental hygienists were interpersonal relation competency (3.61) was the highest, followed by management and educational competency (3.59), organizational relation competency (3.57), and basic dental hygiene management competency (3.56). Regarding the subjects' job performance, 'the task requested by a boss could be finished by the deadline' (3.93) was the highest, followed by 'there has been no case where others were harmed owing to carelessness' (3.76). 'The performance exceeding the targets set by the boss' (3.11) was relatively low. The group working for dental hospitals showed higher job performance than the group working for dental clinics (p=0.009) while there were high correlations between core competencies and job performance (p=0.733). Also, analysis for understanding relevant variables of core competencies that affected job performance revealed that the interpersonal relation competency (p=0.25), self-control competency (p=0.32), and basic dental hygiene competency (p=0.15) were significant. In summary, reinforcement of the dental hygienists' core competencies has a positive effect on job performance. Improved job performance in turn should improve patient care as well as the performance of the healthcare organization overall which will be eventually helpful to the provision of high-quality medical service to patients, and helpful for the hospital organization Helpful in making their performance better. Therefore, it would be necessary to establish administrative/educational support to facilitate dental hygiene education to develop major competencies and vocational basic abilities, as well as reinforce diverse competency educational programs for the current dental hygienists.
