This study evaluated the technical feasibility of the application of titanium oxide (TiO$_2$) photocatalysis for the removal of VOCs in low ppb concentrations commonly associated with non -occupational indoor air quality issues. A series of experiments were conducted to evaluate four parameters (relative humidity (RH), hydraulic diameter (HD), photocatalytic oxidation (PCO) reactor material (RM), and inlet port size (IPS) of PCO reactor) for the PCO destruction efficiencies of the selected target VOCs. None of the target VOCs presented significant dependency on the RH, which is inconsistent with a few previous studies. However, it is noted that the three parameters (HD, RM and IPS) should be considered for better VOCs removal efficiencies for the application of TiO$_2$ photocatalytic technology for cleansing non -occupational indoor air. The PCO destruction of VOCs at concentrations associated with non-occupational indoor air quality issues can be up to nearly 100%. The amount of CO generated during PCO would be negligible in comparison to the indoor CO levels. These results can make the PCO reactor an important tool in the effort to improve non-occupational indoor air quality.
Indoor air quality is the dominant contributor to total personal exposure because most people spend a majority of their time Indoors. Especially when indoor environments have sources of contaminants, exposure to in-door air can potentially pose a greater threat than exposure to ambient air. In this study, estimations of volatile organic compounds and formaldehyde omission rate in indoor environments of new apartments were carried out using mass balance model in indoor environment, because indoor air quality can be affected by source generation, outdoor air level, ventilation, decay by reaction, temperature, humidity, mixing condition and so on. Considering the estimated emission rate of volatile organic compounds and formaldehyde, it Is suggested that new apartment should be designed and constructed in the aspect of using construction materials to emit low hazardous air pollutants.
The common life with modern urban residence, spending more than 80~90% of daily life in indoor environment, makes the importance of indoor air quality (IAQ) even higher. Many efforts have made to improve indoor air quality (IAQ), which requires those systematic approaches for field practice. A recent study reported that no general approach cannot be made for IAQ improvement due to the great deal of variety in different indoor environments. Those indoor spaces included in Korean IAQ regulation were classified based on their characteristics and the IAQ guideline was suggested for each group of indoor spaces. Apart from those indoor spaces, the classroom in elementary school has different characteristics. By introducing the systematic approaches, the elementary classroom was surveyed and analyzed to understand its characteristics in due IAQ consideration. Based on the characteristics, there are several IAQ control measures suggested, including ventilation operation, dust mat installation, and white board. $CO_2$ and airborne dust were monitored and analyzed in order to evaluate the effectiveness of each control measure to IAQ. It was found that the general level of $CO_2$ concentration was managed under the IAQ guideline by applying the ventilator operation. The ventilation was also effective to the fugitive airborne particulate in elementary classroom environment.
Six modules composed of individual sensors and circuit systems for oxygen, temperature, humidity, volatile organic compounds, dust, carbon dioxide, in the indoor air quality control were examined to see their individual performances. Experimental results showed that all the six modules were in good linearity with individual concentration variations
Background: Adolescents are relatively more sensitive than adults to exposure to indoor pollutants. The indoor air quality in classrooms where students spend time together must therefore be managed at a safe level because it can affect the health of students. Objectives: In this study, three types of green-wall models were applied to classrooms where students spend a long time in a limited space, and the resulting effects on reducing PM were evaluated. Methods: In the middle school classrooms which were selected as the experimental subjects, IoT-based indoor air quality monitoring equipment was installed for real-time monitoring. Three types of plant models (passive, active, and active+light) were installed in each classroom to evaluate the effects on improving indoor air quality. Results: The concentration of PM in the classroom is influenced by outdoor air quality, but repeated increases and decreases in concentration were observed due to the influence of students' activities. There was a PM reduction effect by applying the green-wall model. There was a difference in PM reduction efficiency depending on the type of green-wall model, and the reduction efficiency of the active model was higher than the passive model. Conclusions: The active green-wall model can be used as an efficient method of improving indoor air quality. Additionally, more research is needed to increase the efficiency of improving indoor air quality by setting conditions that can stimulate the growth of each type of plant.
The public interest on the indoor air quality of a high-speed train passenger cabin is drastically increasing due to the sealing of cabin. In this study, the concentration of volatile organic compounds and suspended microorganism in the high-speed train passenger cabin was investigated. There have been many studies on the indoor air quality of the high-speed passenger cabin, but the study on the indoor air quality without boarding of passengers were hardly carried out. As a result, it was very difficult to identify the exact source of air pollutants in the cabin. In this study, the indoor air quality of passenger cabin without any passengers was investigated so that the contribution of passengers as the source of various pollutants could be estimated.
The indoor air quality of new apartment buildings, which is known to cause sick housing syndrome, has become a major concern among apartment residents as well as construction companies in Korea. In this study, the effects of environmentally friendly materials and ventilation system are evaluated to compare the strategies applied to improve indoor air quality at the pre-occupancy stage. Six residential units are tested under three conditions : one unit is consisted of environmentally friendly materials and ventilation system, another unit is consisted of environmentally friendly materials and non-ventilation system, and the other four units are consisted of common materials and non-ventilation system.
In recent years, our society is confronted with many environmental problems. Among them, Especially, Sick House Syndrome is brought into relief as a society's issue and the people's concern of Indoor Air Quality is also increased. Nowadays, about 20percent of korean children is suffered from allergic respiratory diseases such as asthma or rhinitis. From student's physical and mental point of view, indoor environmental condition of school is very important and must be kept by strict regulation Therefore, the aim of this thesis is focused on the measurement and analysis of indoor air quality of classroom.
Exposure to indoor air pollution is an emerging world-wide problem, with growing evidence that it is a major cause of morbidity worldwide. Whilst most indoor air pollutants are of outdoor origin, these combine with a range of indoor sourced pollutants that may lead to high pollutant levels indoors. The pollutants of greatest concern are volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and particulate matter (PM), both of which are associated with a range of serious health problems. Whilst current buildings usually use ventilation with outdoor air to remove these pollutants, botanical systems are gaining recognition as an effective alternative. Whilst many years research has shown that traditional potted plants and their substrates are capable of removing VOCs effectively, they are inefficient at removing PM, and are limited in their pollutant removal rates by the need for pollutants to diffuse to the active pollutant removal components of these systems. Active botanical biofiltration, using green wall systems combined with mechanical fans to increase pollutant exposure to the plants and substrate, show greatly increased rates of pollutant removal for both VOCs, PM and also carbon dioxide ($CO_2$). A developing body of research indicates that these systems can outperform existing technologies for indoor air pollutant removal, although further research is required before their use will become widespread. Whilst it is known that plant species selection and substrate characteristics can affect the performance of active botanical systems, optimal characteristics are yet to be identified. Once this research has been completed, it is proposed that active botanical biofiltration will provide a cheap and low energy use alternative to mechanical ventilations systems for the maintenance of indoor environmental quality.
The purpose of this study is to propose a management method to maintain the pleasant indoor air quality of the dental clinic by measuring and analyzing the indoor air quality of the dental clinic. The measurement was conducted in two rooms, a lobby where many residents stay in the reception room for waiting for medical treatment, and a VIP room where treatment activities are mainly performed. Measurement items are Temperature, Humidity, $CO_2$, CO, $NO_2$, $CH_2O$, VOC, $PM_{10}$ and measurement were taken on April 27, 2018. As a result of analyzing the temperature and humidity of the dental clinic, it was analyzed that the average indoor temperature was maintained at $25^{\circ}C$ and the humidity was kept at around 50%, maintaining proper indoor temperature and humidity environment. $CO_2$ was 855ppm in the VIP Room, which satisfied the maintenance standard. In the case of the lobby, it was analyzed to be 1,160ppm, which exceeded the maintenance standard and it is judged that the carbon dioxide generated by the respiration of the people staying in the lobby is the main reason. The mean concentration of formaldehyde in the VIP room was analyzed as $436{\mu}g/m^3$, exceeding the maintenance standard, and $2,100{\mu}g/m^3$ for the VOC exceeded the recommended standard. It was analyzed that the concentration was relatively higher due to the use of disinfectant and other drugs. The mean concentration of PM-10 in the lobby was analyzed as $65{\mu}g/m^3$ and it was analyzed that it satisfied the maintenance standard. To maintain a pleasant indoor air quality in a dental clinic it is necessary to minimize the effects of formaldehyde, VOC, $CO_2$ in the VIP rooms and lobby. For this purpose, the entire ventilation system and air purification system of the dental clinic should be installed. In case of the VIP room, local exhaust ventilation should be installed and workers should wear personal protective equipment.
