  • Sargassum fulvellum (gulfweed) is a widespread seaweed in the coastal areas of northeast Asia. In the present study, we identified the phenolic compounds present in aqueous and ethanolic extracts of S. fulvellum and evaluated their antioxidative properties and their abilities to block cell proliferation using in vitro assays: antioxidant activity was assessed by using a DPPH assay and superoxide anion scavenging activity, anti-tyrosinase activity, and anti-proliferative activity were assessed using MTT and lactate dehydrogenase [LDH] assays in vascular smooth muscle cells. The hot-water ($65^{\circ}C$) extract had a higher phenol content than the ethanolic extract. The hot-water extract showed a statistically significant increase in free radical scavenging activity and a greater ability to reduce proliferation of vascular smooth muscle cells stimulated with platelet-derived growth factor-BB. Taken together, hot-water extracts of S. fulvellum may be an important source of antioxidative and antiproliferative agents.

  • This study was designed to investigate the properties related to browning of hot water and 80% ethanol extracts of green tea (Camellia sinensis) and propolis. The extracts were assessed for polyphenol oxidase (PPO) inhibitory activity and total phenolic and flavonoid contents. In addition, apples were cut into 15 mm thick slices and dipped for 1 min in 0.5% of the green tea extracts and the propolis solutions and stored at room temperature for 24 h. The PPO inhibitory activity of the green tea extracts was better than that of the propolis. The highest DPPH free radical scavenging activity (90.81%), total phenol contents (170.42 mg/mL) and the metal chelating effects (45.93%) were measured in the green tea hot water extracts. The mineral content of the green tea water extracts was 69,328.44 ppm potassium and 2,409.42 ppm magnesium. After 24 h, the ${\Delta}E$ value of the apple slices treated with the green tea water extracts was the lowest (1.35). The antibrowning effects of the green tea extracts were higher than those of propolis in the apple slices.

  • We evaluated the antioxidant activity and tyrosinase inhibitory effects of Pleurotus ostreatus fruiting bodies extracted with acetone, methanol, and hot water. The antioxidant activities were tested against $\beta$-carotene-linoleic acid, reducing power, 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl free radical scavenging activity, and ferrous chelating ability. Furthermore, phenolic acid and flavonoid contents were also analyzed. The methanol extract showed the strongest $\beta$-carotene-linoleic acid inhibition as compared to the other exracts. The acetone extract (8 mg/mL) showed a significantly high reducing power of 1.54 than the other extracts. The acetone extract was more effective than other extracts for scavenging on 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl radicals. The strongest chelating effect (85.66%) was obtained from the acetone extract at 1.0 mg/mL. The antioxidant activities of the extracts from the P. ostreatus fruiting bodies increased with increasing concentration. A high performance liquid chromatography analysis detected seven phenolic compounds, including gallic acid, protocatechuic acid, chlorogenic acid, naringenin, hesperetin, formononetin, and biochanin-A in an acetonitrile and 0.1 N hydrochloric acid (5 : 1) solvent extract. The total phenolic compound concentration was $188{\mu}g$/g. Tyrosinase inhibition of the acetone, methanol, and hot water P. ostreatus extracts increased with increasing concentration. The results revealed that the methanol extract had good tyrosinase inhibitory ability, whereas the acetone and hot water extracts showed moderate activity at the concentrations tested. The results suggested that P. ostreatus may have potential as a natural antioxidant.

  • The plant extracted from Nameko, Gallic, Green tea, Allspice, Polygonum multiflorum, Schizandra chinensis, Armeniacae and Pine needle were utilized to investigate the effects of extracts on free radical reaction, lipid oxidation and nitrite scavenging ability. The pH of ethanol extracts showed a higher than that of hot water extracts, among of which were showed the lowest pH 3.0 in Schizandra chinensis. The important factor of lipid oxidation were $Fe^{2+}$ ion and active oxygen, in which were bound by plant extracts in case of $Fe^{2+}$ ion existed. However, the hydroxyl radical scavenging ability of extracts were lowed, compared to extracts reacted with $Fe^{2+}$ ion. Among of them, the hydroxyl radical scavenging ability of Nameko and Pine needle extracts had a lower TBARS value than those of control. The iron content of extracts were less than 2.0 mg/100 g, but the total iron content of Schizandra chinensis extracts were 6.8 mg/100 g. The ethanol extracts of pine needle were higher than those of hot water extracts on the basis of $Fe^{2+}$ ion content. The ascorbic acid content of green tea showed 14.3 mg/100 g in hot water extracts and 16.7 mg/100 g in ethanol extracts. Electron donating ability of extracts showed more than 50%, except Nameko and allspices, which were higher in ethanol extracts than those of hot water extracts. The superoxide dismutase(SOD)-like activity of green tea showed 85.3% and 63.5% in hot water and ethanol extracts, respectively. The nitrite scavenging ability of green tea was the most effective in both extracts.

  • Objectives: This study investigated the aconitine contents analysis of Buja extracts (raw material of Buja, hot water extract of Buja, and hot water extract of Sambu-tang) and the single oral dose toxicity of Sambu-tang-R in six-week-old Sprague-Dawley rats in order to compare the toxicity of Buja extracts. Methods: Aconitine content analysis is that Buja extracts were hold purity test. To detect single oral dose toxicity, six-week-old Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into two groups, a normal control group and a sambutang-R (2,000 mg/kg) group. For 14 days of treatment, clinical signs, body weight, clinical chemistry, necropsy, and histopathology were examined. Results: The aconitine contents of the Buja extracts were Buja-RH (0.1738%), Buja-RD (0.1746%), and Sambu-tang-R (0.0961%). There were no cases of death in either the control group or the experimental group. Nor was there any disorder to the clinical signs or any significant change in body weight in either group. There was no significant change of clinical chemistry or disorder of necropsy findings in either the control or the experimental group. And there was no difference in histopathological findings in comparing the control group with the experimental group. Conclusions: These results suggest that the aconitine content of the hot water extract of Buja was similar to the raw material of Buja, but the hot water extract of Sambu-tang had greatly decreased aconitine content. These results also suggest that a single oral lethal dose of Sambu-tang-R for Sprague-Dawley rats exceeds 2,000 mg/kg for both female and male rats.
