  • Recent studies emphasize the importance of pivot stiffness in the analysis of tilting pad bearings (TPBs). The present paper develops a finite element model of the pad pivot and compares the predicted pivot stiffness to the results of Hertzian contact model calculations. Specifically, a finite element analysis generates tetrahedral mesh models with ~40,000 nodes for a ball-socket pivot and ~50,000 nodes for a rocker-back pivot. These models assume a frictionless boundary condition in the contact area. Increasing the applied loads on the pad in conjunction with increasing time steps ensures rapid convergence during the nonlinear numerical analysis. Predictions are performed using the developed finite element model for increasing the differential diameters between the pad pivot (or ball) and the bearing housing (or socket). The predictions show that the pivot contact area increases with decreasing differential diameters and increasing applied loads. Further, the maximum deformation occurring at the pivot center increases with increasing differential diameters and increasing applied loads. The pivot stiffness increases nonlinearly with decreasing differential diameters and increasing applied loads. Comparisons of results of the developed finite element model to those of Hertzian contact model calculations assuming a small contact area show that the latter model underestimates the pivot stiffnesses predicted by the finite element models of the ball-socket and rocker-back pivots, particularly for small differential diameters. This result implies the need for cautionduring the design of pivot stiffness by the Hertzian contact model.

  • In this paper, the nonlinear dynamic response of Vehicle-Bridge interaction with the coupled equations of motion including nonlinear Hertzian contact is presented. The moving train model is chosen to have 10 degrees of freedom (DOF). The bridge is modeled as 2D Euler-Bernoulli beam element with 4 DOF for each element, two for rotations and another two for translations. The nonlinear Hertzian contact is used to simulate the interaction between vehicle and bridge. Base on the relationship of wheel displacement of the vehicle and the vertical displacement of the bridge in Hertzian contact, the coupled equations of motion of the whole system is derived. The convenient formulation was encoded into a computer program. The contact forces, contact area and stress of the rail surface were also computed. The accuracy and efficiency of the proposed program are verified and compared with exact analytical solution and other previous studies. Various numerical examples and parametric studies have demonstrated the versatility and applicability of the proposed program.

  • In this study, to describe vehicle-track-bridge dynamic interaction phenomena with 1/4 vehicle model, nonlinear Hertzian contact spring and nonlinear contact damper are introduced. In this approach external loads acting on 1/4 vehicle model are self weight of vehicle and geometry information of running surface. The constraint equation on contact surface is implemented by Penalty method. Also, to improve the numerical stability and to maintain accuracy of solution, the artificial damper and the reaction from constraint violation are introduced. A nonlinear time integration method, in this study, Newmark method is adopted for both equations of vehicles and structure. And to reduce the error caused by inadequate time step size, adaptive time-stepping technique is partially introduced. As the nonlinear Hertzian contact spring has no resistance to tensile force, the bouncing phenomena of wheelset can be described. Thus, it is expected that more versatile dynamic interaction phenomena can be described by this approach and it can be applied to various railway dynamic problems.

  • A surface crack in a semi-infinite body under Hertzian contact was considered. The simplified method used to estimate stress intensity factor K for specimen was extended to the model which is chosen in this paper. Very satisfactory results are obtained comparing with those known and it is proved that the method is more convenient than other methods. The results of the analysis show that due to the presence of $K_I$ for unlubricated condition, mode I fracture is active in the field below the surface and the maximum $K_{I}$ is obtained when the trailing edge of Hertzian contact reaches a position over the crack. The magnitudes of stress intensity factors $K_I$ and $K_Il$ increase with increasing friction forces. For a surface crack perpendicular to the contact surface, the stress intensity factor $K_I$ reaches its maximum value at a depth very close to the surface. Driving forve fer crack initiation and propagation is $K_I$ for unlubricated condition and $K_Il$ for both fluid and boundary lubricated condition.n.

  • Analytical study based on linear fracture mechanics was conducted on propagation behavior of inclined surface crack in semi-infinite elastic body. The analytical model was assumed to be inclined surface crack under plane strain condition upon which Hertzian stress was superimposed. Supposing continuous distribution of dislocation and applying Erdogan-Gupta's method to this crack problem, the stress intensity factors $K_{I}$ and $K_{II}$) at the crack-tip were obtained for various Hertzian contact positions. Analytic results have shown that driving force for crack growth is $K_{I}$ for non-lubricated condition and $K_{II}$ for fluid and boundary lubricated condition. The coefficient of friction at the hertzian contact and crack surfaces plays an important role in predicting the direction of crack propagation. It is also found that the maximum effective stress intensity factor exists at cracks of a certain specific length depending on lubricated condition.ion.n.

  • Linear motion (LM) ball guides have good accuracy and high efficiency. They are widely applied for precision machinery such as machine tools, semiconductor fabrication machines and robots. However, friction force incurs heat between the balls and grooves. Thermal expansion due to the heat deteriorates stiffness and accuracy of the LM ball guides. For accurate estimation of stiffness and accuracy during the linear motion, friction models of LM ball guides are required. To formulate accurate frictional models of LM ball guides according to load and preload conditions, rolling and viscous frictional analyses have been performed in this paper. Contact loads between balls and grooves are derived from Hertzian contact analysis. Contact angle variation is incorporated for the precision modeling. Viscous friction model is formulated from the shear stress of lubricant and the contact area between balls and grooves. Experiments confirm validity of the developed friction model for various external load and feedrate conditions.

  • In this study a computer program is developed for analyzing the elasto-plastic dynamic behaviors of the plate subjected to line-loading by a low-velocity impactor. The equilibrium equation associated with the Hertzian contact law is formulated to evaluate the transient dynamic behaviour of the impacted plate. Compared with an elastic analysis, the effects of material plasticity are presented. Consequently, in the case of elasto-plastic analysys, impulse decreases, displacements increase and contact time duration is longer than the elastic case for same finite element model. And the time variation of the impacting load is not significant due to the plasticity except at the beginning of impact duration, and the induced stresses of the plate are more realistic.

  • This research presents a nonlinear model to analyze the ball bearing nitration due to the waviness in a rigid rotor supported by multi-row ball bearings. The waviness of a ball and each races is modeled by the superposition of sinusoidal function, and the position vectors of inner and outer groove radius center are defined with respect to the mass center of the rotor in order to consider five degrees of freedom of a general rotor-bearing system. The waviness of a ball bearing is introduced to these position vectors to use the Hertzian contact theory in order to calculate the elastic deflection and nonlinear contact force resulting from the waviness while the rotor has translational and angular motion. They can be determined by solving the nonlinear equations of motion with five degrees of freedom by using the Runge-Kutta-Fehlberg algorithm. Numerical results of this research are validated with those of prior researchers. The proposed model can calculate the translational displacement as well as the angular displacement of the rotor supported by the multi-row ball bearings with waviness. It also characterizes the nitration frequencies resulting from the various kinds of waviness in rolling elements, the harmonic frequencies resulting from the nonlinear load-deflection characteristics of ball bearing. and the sideband frequencies resulting from the waviness interaction.

  • A simple computational model for modeling of subsurface crack growth under cyclic contact loading is presented. In this model, it is assumed that the initial fatigue crack will initiate in the region of the maximum equivalent stress at certain depth under the contacting surface. The position and magnitude of the maximum equivalent stress are determined by using the equivalent contact model, which is based on the Hertzian contact conditions with frictional forces. The virtual crack extension method is used for simulation of the fatigue crack growth from the initial crack up to the formation of the surface pit due to contact fatigue. The relationships between the stress intensity factor and crack length are then determined for various combinations of equivalent contact radii and loadings.
