  • This study considers how the fatigue behavior and probabilistic properties of SAE1055 steel are related to its hardness level. SAE1055 steel was heat-treated using induction hardening. Five types of specimens were prepared (A: base material, B: through hardened material with HV390, C: through hardened material with HV510, D: through hardened material with HV700, and E: surface hardened material with HV700). Fatigue tests were performed under a stress ratio of R = -1 using a 4-point rotary bending fatigue tester. The fatigue behaviors were greatly influenced by the hardness, but the fatigue limit did not increase over a hardness of HV510. In addition, the effect of the hardness level on the failure mechanism was evaluated using a scanning electron microscope. The probabilistic properties of the fatigue life were investigated using a probabilistic S-N approach, and the effect of the hardness level on these properties was evaluated using a residue analysis.

  • By using the trade in value-added(TiVA) database and employing social network analysis, this paper analyzes changes in global trade to be triggered by the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and the US-China trade war. The main results are summarized as follows. First, the BRI will help maintain China's core position as the world's manufacturing hub, and will strengthen Europe's service industry capabilities within the global value chain(GVC) network. Second, the US R&D industry, US wholesale and retail industries, and Germany's automobile industry were considered the most influential industries in the GVC network during the 1995-2011 period, and will retain their status until 2049, when the US-China trade war and the BRI are reflected. Third, the increase of the number of communities shows that the BRI might spur fragmentation of the production process. Finally, community structures of inter-industry trade relations, including China's electronics industry, Germany's automobile industry, and US R&D, show important features that are related to the competiveness of each country's service industries.

  • The wire and/or wireless data communication system for anti-disaster system of natural gas governor station was developed. In oder to prevent accidents of governor station, the operator was replaced by RTU(Remote Terminal Unit) which gather and transmit safety situation of governor station. The database and MMI(Man Machine Interface) were also developed to analyze the situation of governor station. The data communication between server and RTU was designed to switch automatically from wire to wireless communication and vice versa when one of them failed communication. We also have developed the patrol car management system which was applied GPS(Global Position System)/GIS(Geometric Information System), and the earthquake detection/transmission system which was adopted three dimension acceleration sensor. When a earthquake may occur, the earthquake detection/transmission system monitors data such as PGA(Peak Ground Acceleration), Sl(Spectrum Intensity) and orders the emergency shutoff valve close immediately.

  • Ball bearing is a device that supports and transmits a load acting on a rotating shaft, and it is a type of rolling bearings that uses the rolling friction of the balls by inserting balls between the inner ring and the outer ring. Grease, which is prepared by mixing a thickener with a base oil, is a lubricant commonly used in bearings and has the advantage of a simple structure and easy handling. Bearings are increasingly being used in high value-added products such as semiconductors, aviation, and robots in the era of the 4th industrial revolution. Accordingly, there is an increasing demand for bearing grease. The selection of grease is an important factor in the bearing design. Therefore, a study must be conducted on the grease life evaluation to select an appropriate grease according to operating conditions such as a high temperature, high rotational speed, and high load. In this study, we evaluate the life of ball-bearing grease according to various operating conditions, namely, temperature, speed, and load changes. For this, we develop and theoretically verify a grease life test machine for ball bearings. We conduct a life test of grease according to various operating conditions of bearings and predict the grease life with a 10% and 50% failure probability using the Weibull analysis. In addition, we analyze the oxide characteristics of the grease over time using the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and the deterioration characteristics of the grease using the carbonyl index.

  • Objectives : HT070 is a mixture of herbal extracts from root of Scutellaria baicalensis and stem bark of Eleutherococcus senticosus , which have long been used for stroke therapy in traditional Korean Medicine. The purpose of this study was to investigate the neuroprotective effects of HT070 on global cerebral ischemia and its potential mechanisms. Methods : Transient global cerebral ischemia was produced by 10 min of four-vessel occlusion (4-VO) in male Wistar rats. HT070 was administered orally at a dosage of 200 mg/kg twice at 0 and 90 min after reperfusion. Hippocampal neuronal damage was measured 7 days after reperfusion. To explore the potential mechanisms, we used hydrogen peroxide (H2O2)-induced rat pheochromocytoma (PC12) cells as an in vitro model. PC12 cells were pretreated with HT070 for 1 h and then exposed to 100 μM H2O2 for 6 h in the presence of HT070. Cell viability was measured by MTT assay and the mRNA expression of Bax, Bcl-2, iNOS and COX-2 were measured by quantitative RT-PCR.Results : Oral administration of HT070 at a dose of 200 mg/kg significantly reduced neuronal death in the hippocampal CA1 region by 13.4% as compared to the vehicle-treated group. HT070 increased cell viability, reversed the down-regulated Bcl-2 mRNA level, and suppressed the up-regulated mRNA expressions of Bax, iNOS, and COX-2 in H2O2-treated PC12 cells. Conclusions : HT070 protects against delayed neuronal death after global cerebral ischemia and its neuroprotection properties might be attributed to the inhibition of mitochondrial apoptosis and ROS-generating enzymes.

  • This study presents a mission management technique that is a key component of underwater docking system used to expand the operating range of autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV). We analyzed the docking scenario and AUV operating environment, defining the feasible initial area (FIA) level, event level, and global path (GP) command to improve the rate of docking success and AUV safety. Non-holonomic constraints, mounted sensor characteristic, AUV and mission state, and AUV behavior were considered. Using AUV and docking station, we conducted experiments on land and at sea. The first test was conducted on land to prevent loss and damage of the AUV and verify stability and interconnection with other algorithms; it performed well in normal and abnormal situations. Subsequently, we attempted to dock under the sea and verified its performance; it also worked well in a sea environment. In this study, we presented the mission management technique and showed its performance. We demonstrated AUV docking with this algorithm and verified that the rate of docking success was higher compared to those obtained in other studies.

  • Poly lactic acid(PLA) and poly butylene adipate-co-terephthalate(PBAT) film was prepared using a twin extruder. PLA (25%) and PBAT (75%) were mixed with various ratio of chain extenders, such as $Joncryl^{(R)}$ and hexamethylene diisocyanate(HDI) to improve the mechanical and thermal properties of produced bio composite films. Tensile strengths of films were steadily increased with increasing ratio of chain extender. The tensile strength of control films was about 25 MPa, and the tensile strength of films with combined chain extenders was above 40 MPa. The films with $Joncryl^{(R)}$ resulted in improved tensile strength, while the film with HDI alone showed improved percent elongation at break. By adding chain extenders into PLA/PBAT resin, the cold crystallization temperature (Tcc) and decomposition temperature (Td) of the produced bio composite films increased. It revealed that the addition of two types of chain extenders was efficient way to get PLA/PBAT film with improved strength and elongation.

  • To measure the traffic pollutants with high temporal and spatial resolution under real conditions a mobile emission laboratory (MEL) was designed and built in KIST with close-cooperation with KIMM and Yonsei university. The equipment of the mini-van provides gas phase measurements of CO, NOx, $CO_2$, THC (Total hydrocarbon) and number density & size distribution measurements of fine and ultra-fine particles by a fast mobility particle sizer (FMPS) and a condensation particle counter (CPC). The inlet sampling port above the bumper enables the chasing of different type of vehicles. This paper introduces the construction and technical details of the MEL and presents data from the car chasing experiment of diesel and CNG city bus. The dilution ratio was increased rapidly according to the chasing distance. Most particles from the diesel city bus were counted under 300 nm and the peak concentration of the particles was located between 40-60 nm. However, the most particles from the CNG city bus were nano particle counted under 50 nm.
