One of the education purpose of the section "Figures" in the eighth grade is to develop students' deductive reasoning ability, which is basic and essential for living in a democratic society. However, most or middle school students feel much more difficulty or even frustration in the study of formal arguments for geometric situations than any other mathematical fields. It is owing to the big gap between inductive reasoning in elementary school education and deductive reasoning, which is not intuitive, in middle school education. Also, it is very burden for students to describe geometric statements exactly by using various appropriate symbols. Moreover, Usage of the same symbols for angle and angle measurement or segments and segments measurement makes students more confused. Since geometric relations is mainly determined by the measurements of geometric objects, students should be able to interpret the geometric properties to the algebraic properties, and vice verse. In this paper, we first compare and contrast inductive and deductive reasoning approaches to justify geometric facts and relations in school curricula. Convincing arguments are based on experiment and experience, then are developed from inductive reasoning to deductive proofs. We introduce teaching methods to help students's understanding for deductive reasoning in the textbook by using stepwise visualization materials. It is desirable that an effective proof instruction should be able to provide teaching methods and visual materials suitable for students' intellectual level and their own intuition.
Geometric education emphasize reasoning ability and spatial sense through development of logical thinking and intuitions in space. Researches about space understanding go along with investigations of space perception ability which is composed of space relationship, space visualization, space direction etc. Especially space visualization is one of the factors which try conclusion with geometric problem solving. But studies about space visualization are limited to middle school geometric education, studies in elementary level haven't been done until now. Namely, discussions about elementary students' space visualization process and ability in plane or space figures is deficient in relation to geometric problem solving. This paper examines these aspects, especially in relation to plane and space problem solving in elementary levels. Firstly we propose the analysis frame to investigate a visualization process for plane problem solving and a visualization ability for space problem solving. Nextly we select 13 elementary students, and observe closely how a visualization process is progress and how a visualization ability is played role in geometric problem solving. Together with these analyses, we propose concrete examples of visualization ability which make a road to geometric problem solving. Through these analysis, this paper aims at deriving various discussions about visualization in geometric problem solving of the elementary mathematics.
The purposes of the study were to investigate whether the use of the Geometer's Sketchpad(GSP) is more effective than the use of traditional tools such as ruler and protractor to enhance eighth- grade students' understanding of quadrilaterals and geometric reasoning ability and to examine how the use of the software affects on the development of students' understanding and reasoning ability. According to the results of the posttest, there was a significant difference in student achievement between students using GSP and students using ruler and protractor. Students using GSP significantly outperformed students using ruler and protractor on the posttest. Student interview data showed that the use of the GSP was more effective in developing students' geometric reasoning ability. Students using GSP achieved higher degrees of acquisition for van Hiele level 2 and 3 than students using ruler and protractor. Dynamic visual representations and hands-on experiences provided in GSP learning environment helped students approach quadrilateral concepts more conceptually and realize their pre-existing conceptual errors and re-conceptualize their mathematical ideas.
Ill-structured problems have drawn attention in that they can enhance problem-solving skills, which are essential in future societies. The purpose of this study is to analyze and evaluate students' spatial reasoning(Intrinsic-Static, Intrinsic-Dynamic, Extrinsic-Static, and Extrinsic-Dynamic reasoning) and problem solving abilities(understanding problems and exploring strategies, executing plans and reflecting, collaborative problem-solving, mathematical modeling) that appear in ill-structured problem-solving. To solve the research questions, two ill-structured problems based on the geometry domain were created and 11 lessons were given. The results are as follows. First, spatial reasoning ability of sixth-graders was mainly distributed at the mid-upper level. Students solved the extrinsic reasoning activities more easily than the intrinsic reasoning activities. Also, more analytical and higher level of spatial reasoning are shown when students applied functions of other mathematical domains, such as computation and measurement. This shows that geometric learning with high connectivity is valuable. Second, the 'problem-solving ability' was mainly distributed at the median level. A number of errors were found in the strategy exploration and the reflection processes. Also, students exchanged there opinion well, but the decision making was not. There were differences in participation and quality of interaction depending on the face-to-face and web-based environment. Furthermore, mathematical modeling element was generally performed successfully.
The objective of the present study was designed to examine that metacognition education had any promoting effects on the development of students' reasoning ability. Two classes in the 5th grade were asked to participated for the present study. Prior to the metacognition teaching, both the experimental and control group classes were given to the preliminary test in which students' basic ability for mathematical reasoning was graded. Then, the students in the experimental group were given 8hour teaching for the topics on the symmetric properties of geometric figures. The present findings indicate that educational application which motivates metacognition can improve mathematical reasoning ability in elementary students. It is widely accepted that metacognition is an active and conscious mental activity, helps the students perceive voluntarily the study items, and further plays an important role in constructing independent and active thinking processes. Accordingly, the present results implicate that the practical performance of metacognition education into the class indeed contributes to build up or strengthen students' voluntary ways of reasoning.
The purpose of this study is to analyze how well middle school students understand space geometrical concept related to a cylinder. To this end, we developed the test tool based on prior research and examined 433 middle school students in November and December, 2018. And in March 2019, we interviewed 4 students who showed some type of errors. The difference in the correct answer rate of the questions by the grade and gender was tested, and the error type was analyzed based on the student's responses to the questions to evaluate the spatial reasoning ability. The results of this study are as follows. First, the difference by graders was not statistically significant in the questions evaluating spatial visual ability. On the other hand, in the case of the two questions for evaluating spatial measurement ability and spatial reasoning ability, the difference in the correct answer rate between the 7th graders and 8th is not significant, but the difference between lower graders and 9th was significant. Second, there was no significant difference in the spatial geometric ability of all girls and boys participating in this study. Third, analyzing the student's error type for an item which assessed spatial reasoning ability, we found that there are various error types in relation to visual, manipulative, and reasoning errors.
The purpose of this study was to provide instructional suggestions by investigating the spatial sense and spatial reasoning ability of 6th grade students. The questionnaire consisted of 20 questions, 10 for spatial visualization and 10 for spatial orientation. The number of subjects for the survey was 145. The processes through which the students solved the problems were the basis for the assessment of their spatial reasoning. The result of the survey is as follows: First, students performed better in spatial visualization than in spatial orientation. With regard to spatial visualization, they were better in transformation than in rotation. With regard to spatial orientation, students performed better in orientation sense and structure cognitive ability than in situational sense. Second, the students that weren't excellent in spatial visualization tended to answer the familiar figures without using mental images. The students who lacked spatial orientation experienced difficulties finding figures observed from the sides. Third, students had high frequency rate on the cognition and use of transformation, the development and application of visualization methods and the use of analysis and synthesis. However they had a lower rate on a systematic approach and deductive reasoning. Further detailed investigation into how students use spatial reasoning, and apply it to actual teaching practice as a device for advancing their geometric thinking is necessary.

This study aims to investigate an approach to teach proportional reasoning in elementary mathematics class by analyzing the proportional strategies the students use to solve the proportional reasoning tasks and their percentages of correct answers. For this research 174 sixth graders are examined. The instrument test consists of various questions types in reference to the previous study; the proportional reasoning tasks are divided into algebraic-geometric, quantitative-qualitative and missing value-comparisons tasks. Comparing the percentages of correct answers according to the task types, the algebraic tasks are higher than the geometric tasks, quantitative tasks are higher than the qualitative tasks, and missing value tasks are higher than the comparisons tasks. As to the strategies that students employed, the percentage of using the informal strategy such as factor strategy and unit rate strategy is relatively higher than that of using the formal strategy, even after learning the cross product strategy. As an insightful approach for teaching proportional reasoning, based on the study results, it is suggested to teach the informal strategy explicitly instead of the informal strategy, reinforce the qualitative reasoning while combining the qualitative with the quantitative reasoning, and balance the various task types in the mathematics classroom.
This study provides middle school students with an opportunity to construct elementary functions with dynamic geometry based on the proportion between lengths of triangle to activate students' intuition in handling elementary algebraic functions and their geometric properties. In addition, this study emphasizes the process of justification about the choice of students' construction method to improve students' deductive reasoning ability. As a result of the pilot lesson study, this paper shows the characteristics of the students' construction process of elementary functions and the roles the teacher plays in the process.

This study investigated not only the existence of differently functioned item due to gender but also domain. In this study, the randomly selected data of TIMSS 2007, which consist of 681 male and 646 women, were analyzed. To detect differently functioned items, this study employed Raju method. For Raju method, three-parameter logistic model was selected. Signed and unsigned area between two item characteristic curve were measured within the real ability range. An item which was detected commonly SA and UA area in Raju method was defined as a differently functioned item. As a result of this study, six items among twenty seven items of mathematics in the TIMSS 2007 were differently functioned item. Five items among those six items, were in favor of boys and one item was in favor of girls. Number, Geometric Shapes and Measures, and Applying were in favor of boys. but Data Display, Reasoning were in favor of girls. The conclusion of this study was summarized as existing differently functioned items in TIMSS 2007 and difference between favorable domain based gender. Finally, it is desirable to consider the differently functioned items by relating those item content for improving the test reliability of TIMSS 2007.
