Biological Control of Pseudomonas sp. for Erwinia rhapontici Causing Vegetables Root Rot (채소연부병균 Erwinia rhapontic 에 대한 Pseudomonas sp. 의 생물학적 억제)

  • For Selection of powerful antagonistic bacteria for biological control of soil borne Erwinia rhapontici causing rot of the vegetables and fruit, excellent straints (S43, S62) were selected from rhizopere in vegetables root rot suppressive soil. Selected strains were identified to be Pseudomonas sp. with Apl 20NE kit tests. Optimum culture condition for the maximum production of antagonistic substance was determined , when isolate was cultured in 523 synthetic broth media at pH 7.0 and 30 during 3 days. Antagonistic substance productivity of isolated Pseudomonas sp. (S43, S62) in the fertilizer soil were increased to about 40-50% compared to that in the non fertilizer soil.

Breeding of early maturing mulberry cultivar 'Suhyang' (Morus alba L.) for mulberry fruit production (조숙계 오디 생산용 뽕나무 품종 '수향' 육성)

  • We bred a mulberry cultivar named Suhyang through local adaptability test, which is under registration as a new cultivar for fruit production. Local adaptability test was carried out at four places (Suwon, Kongju, Wanju and Jinju) for six years from 2007 to 2012. This is belonging to (Morus alba L.) crossed between Josaenghongpisang (Morus alba L.) and Kaeryang (Morus alba L.) among mulberry genetic resources preserved in Suwon. Suhyang was high yielding cultivar in fruit productivity by 12% compared to control cultivar 'Chungil (Morus alba L.)' for four years. Although Suhyang was higher in sugar content of mulberry fruits, it was bigger than that of 'Chungil'. It is adaptable to every where except the places where cold damage and sclerotic disease happen frequently.

  • The 'Hongsil' strawberry ($Fragaria{\times}ananassa$ Duch.) is a new cultivar released by Gyeongsangnam-do Agricultural Research & Extension Services in 2015. This cultivar originated from a 2011 cross between '802a312' and 'Okmae' and exhibited suitable fruit characteristics for export due to the high soluble solids content and firmness of the fruit. The breeding line '1116-74-15' was selected as an elite line after examining its characteristics and productivity from 2013 to 2014. A field trial of this line was conducted on a farm in 2015, and it was registered as 'Hongsil' thereafter. The 'Hongsil' strawberry demonstrates intermediate plant type and moderate vigor in growth. It is suitable for forcing culture due to its early flower bud differentiation and low chilling requirement. The soluble solids content of 'Hongsil' is $10.0^{\circ}Brix$, which is approximately $0.4^{\circ}Brix$ higher than that of 'Seolhyang' The Fruit firmness of 'Hongsil' is $13.1g{\cdot}mm^{-2}$, similar to that of 'Maehyang'. Fruits of 'Hongsil' are long conical having a red skin color and marketable yield is $4,269kg{\cdot}10a^{-1}$ which is 16% higher than that of 'Maehyang'. The 'Hongsil' cultivar is sensitive to powdery mildew, and it therefore warrants further investigation regarding disease control.

Biocontrol Activities of Peribacillus butanolivorans KJ40, Bacillus zanthoxyli HS1, B. siamensis H30-3 and Pseudomonas sp.   • Abiotic and biotic stresses have been a serious threat to crop growth and productivity in the agricultural system. In this study, four strains (HS1, H30-3, KJ40, and BC42), which have biological activities related to disease suppression or alleviation of salinity and drought stresses, were tested for broad-spectrum biocontrol activity against anthracnose caused by Colletotrichum orbiculare, a bacterial fruit blotch caused by Acidovorax citrulli, and Fusarium wilt caused by Fusarium oxysporum in cucumber plants. As a result of test, when the four strains were drenched into the soil, anthracnose in cucumber leaves significantly decrease; strain KJ40 suppressed disease incidence by A. citrulli; strain BC42 significantly reduced bacterial fruit blotch and Fusarium wilt compared to control. Therefore, strain KJ40 could be a biocontrol candidate for controlling anthracnose through induced systemic resistance and the disease caused by A. citrulli as well as alleviating drought stress; strain BC42 has broad-spectrum biocontrol activity against anthracnose, Fusarium wilt, and bacterial fruit blotch.

Effects of Fermented Soybean Extracts and Rain-shelter System on Growth and Disease Occurrence of 'Niitaka' Pear (발효 콩 추출물과 비가림 시설이 '신고' 배나무의 생육과 병해충 발생에 미치는 영향)

  • Growth of 6-year old 'Niitaka' pear (Pyrus pyrifolia Nakai) trees and control of insect and disease occurrences were compared between fermented soybean extracts and rain-shelter system for two years. Foliar application of fermented soybean extracts was applied at 6 times as a pre-experiment in the open-field in 2013, with a rain-shelter system in 2014. Fermented soybean extract treatment increased foliar concentrations of approximately 0.46% T-N, 0.17% K, 0.19% Ca, and 0.06% Mg in 2013 compared to the control, with similar macro-nutrients between the control and soybean extract treatment observed in 2014. Rain-shelter system increased foliar concentrations of T-N, Ca, and Mg compared to the open-field. There were no significantly different between the control and soybean extract treatment for number of leaves per fruit, leaf dry weight, phytotoxicity, and completed shoot growth on August during the two years. Rain-shelter system increased leaf dry weight and did not affect phytotoxicity in the leaves. Fruit quality parameters were mostly similar to control and soybean extract treatment for two years, with higher fruit firmness observed for soybean extract treatment. Rain-shelter system advanced 4 days of harvest dates, and increased approximately 7.0 ton fruit yield per ha, 20 g mean fruit weight, and fruit soluble solid contents compared to open-field in 2014. Soybean extract treatment little suppressed occurrence of disease and insect on the leaves and fruits in both years. Rain-shelter system increased occurrence of Venturia nashicola on the leaves and to 63.8% of Gymnosporangium asiaticum on the fruits in 2014. Strong winds and storms in May elevated relative humidity in the rain-shelter system and caused high infection of the disease occurrence, requiring for an additional green control method. Soybean extract treatment little affected tree growth and would have initiated for a long-term study to evaluate tree physiological characteristics. Rain-shelter system improved fruit productivity and advanced harvest dates, which could have been more effective facility at a Thanks Giving Day between middle and end of September.

Breeding of Strawberry 'Okmae' for Forcing Culture with Less Labor Requirement for Fruit Thinning (적과 노력 절감용 촉성 딸기 '옥매' 품종 육성)

  • A new strawberry cultivar (Fragaria ${\times}$ ananassa Duch.) 'Okmae' was developed from a cross between 'Toyonoka' and 'Maehyang'. This cultivar has a good fruit quality and suitable number of flowers per cluster for labor saving in fruit thinning. 'Gyoengnam No. 1' was selected as an elite line with vigorous plant growth, higher soluble solids content and fruit firmness after examining its characteristics and productivity in forcing cultures from 2007 to 2009. Farmer's field trial of 'Gyoengnam No. 1' was conducted in 2010 and it was registered as 'Okmae' thereafter. The general characteristics of 'Okmae' are vigorous growth habit, erect plant type, less number of leaf and elliptic leaf shape. 'Okmae' has long peduncle and 9-10 flowers per flower cluster which need less labor for fruit thinning. Fruits of 'Okmae' are conical having a bright red and glossy skin color. Although 'Okmae' has a smaller average fruit number per plant of 21.9 than that of the control cultivars, it's possible to produce high yield because of greater fruit weight of 26.0 g. 'Okmae' showed a high soluble solids content of $11.6^{\circ}Brix$, low acidity of 0.37%, and high firmness of $14.5g{\cdot}mm^{-2}$. It is sensitive to anthracnose and powery mildews, but high-quality strawberry can be harvested by using effective control measure.

Current occurrence of persimmon viroid and citrus viroid in persimmon in JellaNam-do and testing for viroid inactivation methods (전라남도 지역 감 바이로이드의 감염상황 및 무병화 효율 연구)

  • It is a serious situation that the farmers' income has gradually decreased due to the decline of productivity of fruit trees infected with viroids. It has been known that Persimmon viroid (PVd) and Citrus viroid (CVd) are economically important viroids that can infected persimmon. In this study, the incidence of CVd and PVd in 'Fuyu' persimmon were identified as 41% and 34% in JeollaNam-do, respectively. The collected persimmon samples infected by both PVd and CVd were used for testing efficiency of the viroid inactivation methods. The samples were subjected to single treatment of the heat treatment ($37^{\circ}C$), cold treatment ($4^{\circ}C$), or antiviral agent treatment (Ribavirin), and double treatment of combinations of the three methods. Viroid inactivation efficiency was confirmed through RT-PCR. In the case of the samples subjected to cold treatment for 4 weeks, the viroid inactivation efficiency was most significantly high as 67% against the survival rate of 100%. In addition, in the case of the samples treated for 2 weeks with the antiviral agents and cold treatment, the viroid inactivation rate was similar to that of the cold treatment. In conclusion, the cold treatment showed the highest viroid inactivation efficiency, and this result will provide valuable information for production of viroid-free persimmon.
