This study has planned to understand the counting ability of mathematical low achievers(MLAs) in low grades of elementary school. For this, four MLAs of second graders were chosen as a experimental group and four MLAs of fourth graders and two mid-achievers of second grades were chosen as a comparison group. Every students were individually interviewed and their data were analyzed with three respects: accuracy, speed, efficiency. The results are the following three. First, the experimental group is still not used to counting. They counted slowly, made many mistakes and errors, and used inefficient strategies during counting. Second, It is hard to expect natural improvement of their counting performance as growing up. Finally, the explicit correlation between counting ability and arithmetic ability is not drown in this study, but the possibility still remains. These results tell us that we need to stress counting activity to MLAs when they are low graders.
The purpose of this paper is to develop and to introduce the rubrics for performance assessment, which can measure elementary school upper graders' ability to use ICT, With a goal of improving their ability to use ICT, the students, who are in the fourth, fifth, six grades, received instructions on the basic skills and knowledge for using the computer during the extracurricular-activity session or the self-directed session after regular classes. In the study, the rubrics were developed on the basis of the 7th national curriculum, and defined respectively assessment criteria and attainment targets for the upper graders. The assessment criteria were set after the researcher determined the most basic and important skills and knowledge that the upper graders should have, and then compared them with the attainment criteria in the national curriculum. Accordingly, the application of the rubrics developed for this study is expected to lessen the burden of elementary school teachers when they implement performance assessment in their classrooms. Finally, using the rubrics, the study assessed elementary school students' ability to use the computer, and showed somewhat limiting but satisfactory results.
This study investigated elementary school students' understanding of basic functional relationships. It analyzed the written responses from a total of 2087 students of second, fourth, and sixth graders using tests that examined their understanding of five types of functional relationships. The results of this study showed that students tended to be more successful as their grades went up with regard to all the problem types. There were statistically differences among the three grade levels. Even lower graders were quite successful in dealing with additive relation, direct proportion, and inverse proportion. However the items dealing with square relation and linear relation were difficult even to sixth graders. It was common that students were good at completing the table by looking for a pattern from the given numbers but that they had difficulties in anticipating the value of 'y' when the value of 'x' is given either as a big number or as a symbol. Given these results, this paper includes issues and implications on how to foster functional thinking ability at the elementary school.
The main purpose of this study was to explore the process of generalization generated by mathematically gifted students. Specifically, this study probed how fourth, fifth, and sixth graders might generalize geometric patterns and represent such generalization. The subjects of this study were a total of 30 students from gifted classes of one elementary school in Korea. The results of this study showed that on the question of the launch stage, students used a lot of recursive strategies that built mainly on a few specific numbers in the given pattern in order to decide the number of successive differences. On the question of the towards a working generalization stage, however, upper graders tend to use a contextual strategy of looking for a pattern or making an equation based on the given information. The more difficult task, more students used recursive strategies or concrete strategies such as drawing or skip-counting. On the question of the towards an explicit generalization stage, students tended to describe patterns linguistically. However, upper graders used more frequently algebraic representations (symbols or formulas) than lower graders did. This tendency was consistent with regard to the question of the towards a justification stage. This result implies that mathematically gifted students use similar strategies in the process of generalizing a geometric pattern but upper graders prefer to use algebraic representations to demonstrate their thinking process more concisely. As this study examines the strategies students use to generalize a geometric pattern, it can provoke discussion on what kinds of prompts may be useful to promote a generalization ability of gifted students and what sorts of teaching strategies are possible to move from linguistic representations to algebraic representations.
This study analyzed the science assessment items that were conducted by the paper and the computer-based assessment in the TIMSS 2019 pre-test, which is an international academic achievement assessment. We examined whether the test mode influenced the percentage of items answered correctly by each graders. As a result, there was no significant difference in the correct answer rates of science items according to the test media in 4th and 8th graders. Looking at the each graders, the difference in the percentage of correct answers was relatively large in the fourth grader rather than the eighth grader. In terms of items, the difference in the percentage of correct answers was relatively larger for the constructed items than the multiple choice questions. As a result of analyzing the content of science and assessment items on the influence of the test media, the multiple choice items showed little difference between the paper and the computer-based assessment items, but the answer-type items tended to have a lower percentage of correct answers than the paper-based assessment. In addition, by grade, 4th graders showed lower percentages of correct answers in the constructed items than 8th graders. This study provides implications related to the development and introduction of computer-based assessment in Korea, and suggests an educational implications for computer-based assessment to be well established as school evaluation.

The purpose of this study was to collect basic data for the development of effective oral health education program in elementary school. The subjects in this study Were 604 fourth-year, fifth-year and sixth-year students of an elementary school in Seoul, Oral health awareness and behaviors were surveyed and analyzed. The findings of this study were as follows: 1. The most common time for toothbrushing was after dinner(62.0%) and before bedtime(62.3%). By school year, the largest number who brushed their teeth after dinner were fourth and fifth graders while the greatest number who did so after breakfast were sixth graders. Seventy-four percent of respondents brushed the teeth twice or more a day. By school year, the fifth-year students brushed their teeth the least while girls outperformed the boys in daily toothbrushing frequency(p<0.05). Regarding the intake of cariogenic food, 62.1% took that kind of food once or more a day. By school year, the fifth graders took the most (p<0.05), and girls took more cariogenic food than the boys(p<0.05). 2. Ninety percent of the respondents had visited a dental clinic. By grade, the sixth-year students had visited a dental clinic more frequently and girls more frequently than boys. Eighty percent of the respondents visited a dental clinic to receive treatment but just 12.3% visited a dental clinic to prevent oral diseases. Concerning the fear of dental treatment, only 14.4% expressed fear. School year made no difference, yet the percentage of girls who experienced fear was higher than that of boys(p<0.05). Regarding preventive treatment, 39.7% experienced pit and fissure sealing and 24.2% experienced the application of fluorides. All the students hadn't much experience in preventive treatment regardless of school year -- gender didn't make a difference. 3. Fourty-six percent of respondents had a preference for the fluoride mouth rinsing program; 38.4% wanted that program to continue. As to the reason for preference, 38.2% preferred it because of the prevention of dental caries, 43.0%, the largest percentage, didn't favor it because they found it too much trouble to do(some of the respondents gave two different answers). 4. Despite an increase in the frequency of toothbrushing at the right time, they still took cariogenic food frequently. Their visit to a dental clinics also aimed at treatment more than at prevention, and they had very narrow experience of preventive treatment Furthermore, the fluoride mouth rinsing program failed to draw their interest Therefore, it is recommended that a successful oral health education program should be developed.
The purpose of this study was to examine variables affecting the occupational aspiration of elementary school students and the relationship of the variables in a bid to acquire empirical information on influential factors for the development of children's occupational aspiration. Out of the personal characteristics of school children, academic achievement, self-esteem and parental educational level that respectively belonged to the cognitive, affective and environmental domains were selected as the variables that might affect occupational aspiration. And the relationship of the variables to the level of occupational aspiration was selected as a research question of the study. The findings of the study were as follows: in relation to the level of occupational aspiration by gender, the girls were ahead of the boys. There were no statistically significant gaps in that aspect according to grade. And, the academic achievement of the elementary school students had a positive correlation to the level of their occupational aspiration, and there was no statistically significant relationship between self-esteem and the level of occupational aspiration. When academic achievement and self-esteem were selected as predictors, the two variables made a 8.5% prediction of the occupational aspiration of the fourth graders, and made a 12.3% prediction of the occupational aspiration of the sixth graders. There were no statistically significant differences in the level of occupational aspiration according to parental educational level. The fourth and sixth graders were found to have an occupational aspiration in consideration of not only the characteristics of occupations but their own academic achievement, namely their abilities.

The purposes of this study are to develop the STEAM program grounded on curriculum and to investigate educational effects of the developed program on students' attitude of science and science self-efficacy by application to elementary informal science education environment. In order to develop this program, the literature reviews were conducted and then STEAM education program based on the theme 'light' is developed. The developed program was revised and complemented through preliminary applications and consulting with experts, and applied to 65 students. A single group pre-post paired t-test was conducted through the students' attitude of science and science self-efficacy test. The semi-structure interviews were used to gather focused and additional data. The results of this study were as follows: firstly, STEAM education program was developed with the theme 'light' for elementary students in order to increase their interest related to real life. Secondly, the results indicated that the program was statistically significant on the attitude of science for the group of third and fourth graders. However, the effects of science self-efficacy did not appear a significant result for the third and fourth graders. They expressed one possible reason. The theme of light was not familiar with them because the theme was scheduled to teach in the second semester of the fourth graders. Some of students in this group did have a chance to learn the theme. Thirdly, the program was very effective for the fifth and sixth graders on their attitude of science and science self-efficacy. In conclusion, STEAM education program developed with the theme of light is contributed to elementary students' attitude of science in the informal science education. Students' learning experiences of relevant concepts can influence on students' science self-efficacy. It could be very important factor to consider students' grade level and previous learning experiences when the educational programs develop.
The purpose of this research was to investigate the possibility of peer recommendation and to provide a diverse perspectives identifying for gifted elementary school students. The subjects were 355 elementary school students who were either fourth, fifth, and sixth grade from D elementary school located in Gyeonggi province, 165 elementary school students who are either fourth, fifth, and sixth grade from J elementary school located in Gyeonggi province, and 16 teachers who were home-room teachers for students surveyed. This research investigate the difference of creative personality, achievement motivation, problem solving patterns, and task preference inventory between students recommended by peer and students not recommended by peer. The results of this research were as follows. Firstly, the students recommended by peer showed the significantly higher creative personality, achievement motivation, problem solving patterns, and task preference than the student not recommended by peer. Secondly, as a result of comparing the students recommended by peer and students not recommended by peer for each grade, fifth and sixth grade students showed a significantly higher score in the test than other graders. Fourth grade students showed significantly higher score in every sections in the test, except for the section of creative personality. Therefore, the peer recommandation method can be applied to fifth, and sixth graders. Thirdly, the student recommended by both teacher and peer showed significantly higher problem solving patterns, and task preference scores than the student recommended only by teacher. Therefore, peer recommendation method can be an useful data for complementing teacher recommendation and it can identify gifted elementary school students.

This research applies the climbing learning method that, a Japanese professor, Saito Noboru established and practiced, to fourth and sixth graders in an elementary school in order to analyze its effect on mathematical creativity, attitude toward mathematical creativity, so called CAS(Creative Attitude Scale) and academic achievement of the subject. The goal is to explore methods that can enhance students' mathematical creativity. To address these tasks, the research developed a teaching-learning scheme and learning structure chart that applies the climbing learning method. Next, the research organized two homogeneous groups among 124 students in fourth and sixth grades in S elementary school, located in the city of Busan. The experiment group went through classes that applied climbing learning method, while the control group received regular teaching. The following describes the research findings. After the experiment, the research conducted t-test for the independent sample based on the test result in terms of mathematical creativity, CAS and academic achievement of the subject. For mathematical creativity, all four constructing factor showed statistically significant differences at significance level of 5%. For CAS, statistically significant difference was revealed at significance level of 0.1%. However, in regard to a test of academic achievement for fourth and sixth graders, statistically significant difference was not detected at significance level of 5% even though the average score of the students in the experiment group was higher by 6 points. The research drew the following conclusion. Firstly, classes that apply climbing learning method can be more effective than regular classes in enhancing mathematical creativity of elementary school students. Secondly, the climbing learning method has positive impact on inclination for mathematical creativity of elementary school students. The research suggests that the climbing learning method can be an effective teaching-learning tool to improve students' mathematical creativity and inclination for mathematical creativity.
