  • Mirror symmetry for del Pezzo surfaces was studied in [3] where they suggested that the mirror should take the form of a Landau-Ginzburg model with a particular type of elliptic fibration. This argument came from symplectic considerations of the derived categories involved. This problem was then considered again but from an algebro-geometric perspective by Gross, Hacking and Keel in [8]. Their construction allows one to construct a formal mirror family to a pair (S, D) where S is a smooth rational projective surface and D a certain type of Weil divisor supporting an ample or anti-ample class. In the case where the self intersection matrix for D is not negative semi-definite it was shown in [8] that this family may be lifted to an algebraic family over an affine base. In this paper we perform this construction for all smooth del Pezzo surfaces of degree at least two and obtain explicit equations for the mirror families and present the mirror to dP2 as a double cover of ℙ2.

  • Catmull-Clark subdivision scheme provides a powerful method for building smooth and complex surfaces. But the number of faces in the uniformly refined meshes increases exponentially with respect to subdivision depth. Adaptive tessellation reduces the number of faces needed to yield a smooth approximation to the limit surface and, consequently, makes the rendering process more efficient. In this paper, we present a new adaptive tessellation method for general Catmull-Clark subdivision surfaces. Different from previous control mesh refinement based approaches, which generate approximate meshes that usually do not interpolate the limit surface, the new method is based on direct evaluation of the limit surface to generate an inscribed polyhedron of the limit surface. With explicit evaluation of general Catmull-Clark subdivision surfaces becoming available, the new adaptive tessellation method can precisely measure error for every point of the limit surface. Hence, it has complete control of the accuracy of the tessellation result. Cracks are avoided by using a recursive color marking process to ensure that adjacent patches or subpatches use the same limit surface points in the construction of the shared boundary. The new method performs limit surface evaluation only at points that are needed for the final rendering process. Therefore it is very fast and memory efficient. The new method is presented for the general Catmull-Clark subdivision scheme. But it can be used for any subdivision scheme that has an explicit evaluation method for its limit surface.

  • A map is singular if each edge is on the same face on a surface (i.e., those have only one face on a surface). Because any map with loop is not colorable, all maps here are assumed to be loopless. In this paper po-vides the explicit expression of chromatic sum functions for rooted singular maps on the projective plane, the torus and the Klein bottle. From the explicit expression of chromatic sum functions of such maps, the explicit expression of enumerating functions of such maps are also derived.

  • In this paper, we classify translation surfaces of Type 2 in the three dimensional simply isotropic space ${\mathbb{I}}_3^1$ satisfying some algebraic equations in terms of the coordinate functions and the Laplacian operators with respect to the first, the second and the third fundamental form of the surface. We also give explicit forms of these surfaces.

  • We performed replica exchange molecular dynamics (REMD) simulations of the tripzip2 peptide (betahairpin) using the GB implicit and TI3P explicit solvation models. By comparing the resulting free energy surfaces of these two solvation model, we found that the GB solvation model produced a distorted free energy map, but the explicit solvation model yielded a reasonable free energy landscape with a precise location of the native structure in its global free energy minimum state. Our result showed that in particular, the GB solvation model failed to describe the tryptophan packing of trpzip2, leading to a distorted free energy landscape. When the GB solvation model is replaced with the explicit solvation model, the distortion of free energy shape disappears with the native-like structure in the lowest free energy minimum state and the experimentally observed tryptophan packing is precisely recovered. This finding indicates that the main source of this problem is due to artifact of the GB solvation model. Therefore, further efforts to refine this model are needed for better predictions of various aromatic side chain packing forms in proteins.

  • Fake projective planes are smooth complex surfaces of general type with Betti numbers equal to that of the usual projective plane. Recent explicit constructions of fake projective planes embed them via their bicanonical embedding in ℙ9. In this paper, we study Keum's fake projective plane (a = 7, p = 2, {7}, D327) and use the equations of [1] to construct an embedding of fake projective plane in ℙ5. We also simplify the 84 cubic equations defining the fake projective plane in ℙ9.

  • We propose a sliding surface design method for linear systems with mismatched uncertainties in the state space model. In terms of LMIs, we derive a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of a linear sliding surface such that the reduced-order equivalent sliding mode dynamics restricted to the linear sliding surface is not only stable but completely invariant to mismatched uncertainties. We give an explicit formula of all such linear switching surfaces in terms of solution matrices to the LMI existence condition. We also give a switching feedback control law, together with a design algorithm. Additionally, we give some hints for designing linear switching surfaces guaranteeing pole clustering constraints or linear quadratic performance bound constraints. Finally, we give a design example in order to show the effectiveness of the proposed methodology.

  • The plane strain analysis for simulating the stretch/draw forming operation of arbitrarily-shaped tool profiles and arbitrarily draw-in conditions is introduced. An implicit, incremental, updated Lagrangian formulation is employed, introducing a rigid-viscoplastic constitutive equation. Contact and friction are considered through the mesh-normal, which compatibly describes arbitrary tool surfaces and FEM meshe without depending on the explicit spatial derivatives of tool surfaces. The FEM formulation is tested in the sections automotive inner panel and two-side draw-in. Not only the excellent agreement between measured and computed strains in the stretched section is obtained, but also the numerical stability of current formulation is verified in the two-side draw-in section.

  • A level set method is combined with the volume-of-fluid method so that the coupled method can not only calculate an interfacial curvature accurately but also can achieve mass conservation well. The coupled level set and volume-of-fluid(CLSVOF) method is efficiently implemented by employing an interface reconstruction algorithm which is based on the explicit relationship between the interface configuration and the fluid volume function. The CLSVOF method is applied for numerical simulation of droplet impact on solid surfaces with variable contact angles. The numerical results are found to preserve mass conservation and to be in good agreement with the data reported in the literature. Also, the present method proved to be applicable to the complex phenomena such as breakup and rebound of a droplet.
