  • An effective and disturbance suppressible controller can be obtained by assigning the left eigenstructure (eigenvalues/left eigenvectors) of a system. However, the disturbance decouplability is governed by the right eigenstructure(eigenvalues/right eigenvectors) of the system. In this paper, in order to obtain a disturbance decouplable as well as effective and disturbance suppressible controller, the concurrent assignment scheme of the left and right eigenstructure is proposed. The biorthogonality property between the left and right modal matrices of a system well as the relations between the achievable right modal matrix and states selection matrices are used to develop the scheme. The proposed concurrent eigenstructure assignment scheme guarantees that the desired eigenvalues are achieved exactly and the desired left and right eigenvectors are assigned to the best possible(achievable) sets of eigenvectors in the least square sense, respectively. A numerical example is presented to illustrate the usefulness of the proposed scheme.

  • This work is concerned with the assignment of the desired eigenstructure for linear time-varying systems such as missiles, rockets, fighters, etc. Despite its well-known limitations, gain scheduling control appeared to be the focus of the research efforts. Scheduling of frozen-time, frozen-state controller for fast time-varying dynamics is known to be mathematically fallacious, and practically hazardous. Therefore, recent research efforts are being directed towards applying time-varying controllers. In this paper, ⅰ) we introduce a differential algebraic eigenvalue theory for linear time-varying systems, and ⅱ) we also propose an eigenstructure assignment scheme for linear time-varying systems via the differential Sylvester equation based upon the newly developed notions. The whole design procedure of the proposed eigenstructure assignment scheme is very systematic, and the scheme could be used to determine the stability of linear time-varying systems easily as well as provides a new horizon of designing controllers for the linear time-varying systems. The presented method is illustrated by a numerical example.

  • Eigenstructure assignment is a typical method with the capability of the consideration of the specifications in time-domain in designing a 1]near control system. In general eigenstructure assignment such that all the desired eigenvalues are exactly assigned to the closed-loop system, the assignment of the eigenvectors is very restrictive. However if the arbitrary point in a certain area as an eigenvalue is allowed to be assigned t the closed-loop system, the assignment of the eigenvector corresponding to this eigenvalue can be much less restrictive. In this paper, the flexible eigenstructure assignment that can assign more closely the desired eigenvector to the closed-loop system by using an optimization technique is proposed.

  • This paper considers eigenstructure assignment in high-order linear systems via proportional plus derivative feedback. It is shown that the problem is closely related with a type of so-called high-order Sylvester matrix equations. Through establishing two general parametric solutions to this type of matrix equations, two complete parametric methods for the proposed eigenstructure assignment problem are presented. Both methods give simple complete parametric expressions for the feedback gains and the closed-loop eigenvector matrices. The first one mainly depends on a series of singular value decompositions, and is thus numerically very simple and reliable; the second one utilizes the right factorization of the system, and allows the closed-loop eigenvalues to be set undetermined and sought via certain optimization procedures. An example shows the effect of the proposed approaches.

  • This paper presents a novel fault isolation filter design method using left eigenstructure assignment scheme proposed by the first author et al. The proposed method shows good performance of fault isolation with an exact eigenstructure assignment and guarantees that the corrupted ${\gamma}$ faults can be isolated simultaneously when the number of available output measurements are equal to or larger than (${\gamma}+1$). A numerical example for the fault isolation filter is also included.

  • In this paper, S (stochastic)-eigenvalue concept and its S-eigenvector for linear continuous-time systems with probabilistic uncertainties is proposed. The proposed concept is concerned with the perturbation of eigenvalues due to the probabilistic variable parameters in the dynamic model of a plant. S-eigenstructure assignment scheme via the Sylvester equation approach based on the S-eigenvalue concept is also proposed. The proposed design schemes are illustrated by numerical examples, and applied to the longitudinal dynamics of open-loop-unstable aircraft with possible uncertainties in aerodynamic and thrust effects as well as separate dynamic pressure. These results explicitly characterize how S-eigenvalues in the complex plane may impose stability on S-eigenstructure assignment.

  • The underlying principle of fault detection via unknown input observer is to make the state estimation error independent of disturbances(or unknown inputs). In this paper, we present a systematic method that can exactly assign the eigenstructure with disturbance suppression and fault isolation capability. A desired eigenstructure for both fault isolation and disturbance suppression is obtained by an optimization method. For the dual purposes, terms for fault isolation and far disturbance suppression are included in the employed objective function for the optimization. The proposed scheme is applied to a simple example to confirm the usefulness of the method.

  • In this paper, we introduce a relationship between the sensitivity and the robustness of a system, and we propose a robust eigenstructure assignment scheme using a novel performance index which can consider the performance and the robustness of the system simultaneously. We also propose an assignment accuracy measure and a robustness measure which are used for the performance examination of the proposed robust eigenstructure assignment scheme. The usefulness of the proposed algorithm and the measures are verified by applying to controller design of a simple numerical example and the EMRAAT missile.

  • This survey paper presents and overview on eigenstructure assignment (EA) control design methodologies. EA is an excellent control design method which may be used to assign the entire eigenstructure(eigenvalues, and right or left eigenvectors) of a closed-loop linear system via a full state or an output feedback control law. In general, EA is well-sutied for incorporating classical specifications on damping, settling time, and mode or disturbance decoupling into a modern multivariable control framework. The purpose of this paper is to provide an extensive survey on EA control design methods that might serve as an introduction to a study on EA. The fundamental concepts and formulations for understanding EA problems are extensively described. The recently reported results on EA are also presented.

  • The control effectiveness and disturbance suppressibility are mainly governed by a left eigenstructure of a system. In this paper, a control algorithm which uses an output feedback eigenstructure assignment scheme is proposed in order that a desired closed-loop system has the specified degree of controllability and/or degree of disturbance suppressibility. To do this, a modal and a gross disturbance suppressibility measures are proposed. A modified version of Hamdan and Nayfeh's modal controllability measure is also presented. The validity and usefulness of the proposed measures and the controller design algorithm are illustrated by designing a controller for a third-order system as an example.
