  • The power series approximation method is proposed for real time implementations of a discrete flux observer. The proposed method improves the performance of the discrete flux observer in the case of a low sampling rate and high speed range, where the simple discrete flux observer converted by the Euler method cannot estimate the actual flux precisely. The performance of discrete flux observers with different orders of approximation is compared to find out the proper order of approximation. The validity of the proposed method is verified through simulation and experiment.

  • In this paper we consider the variable structure control for a class of discrete-time uncertain multivariable systems where the nominal system is linear. Discrete-time switching dynamics are introduced so that a new type of state trajectories called sliding mode may exist on the sliding surface by state feedback. The quantitative analysis for the matched uncertainties will show that every response of the system with the proposed switching dynamics is bounded within small neighborhoods of the state-space origin. Also, by the similarity transformation it will be shown that the eigenvalues of the closed-loop systems are composed of those of the subsystems which govern the range-space dynamics and null-space dynamics. It will be also shown that ideal sliding mode can be obtained in the absence of uncertainties due to one-step attraction to the sliding surface regardless of initial position of states. • Digital control of robot manipulator employs discrete-time robot models. It is important to explore effective discrete-time robot models and to analyze their properties in control system designs. This paper presents a new type discrete-time robot model. The model is derived by using trapezoid rule to approximate the convolution integral term, then eliminating nonlinear force terms from robot dynamical equations. The new model obtained has very simple structure, and owns the properties of independence to the nonlinear force terms. According to evaluation criteria, three aspects of the model properties: model accuracy, model validity range and model simplicity are examined and compared with commonly used discrete-time robot models. The validity of the proposed model and its advantages to control system designs are verified by simulation results.

  • In this paper, we consider a discrete time queueing system fed by a superposition of an ON and OFF source with heavy tail ON periods and geometric OFF periods and a D-BMAP (Discrete Batch Markovian Arrival Process). We study the tail behavior of the queue length distribution and both infinite and finite buffer systems are considered. In the infinite buffer case, we show that the asymptotic tail behavior of the queue length of the system is equivalent to that of the same queueing system with the D-BMAP being replaced by a batch renewal process. In the finite buffer case (of buffer size K), we derive upper and lower bounds of the asymptotic behavior of the loss probability as $K\;\longrightarrow\;\infty$.

  • Unlike or common images, Hyperspectral images were taken by continuous electromagnetic spectral into numerous bands according to wavelengths and are high-capacity high-resolution images. It has more information than ordinary images, so it is used to explore objects and materials. To reduce the amount of information in hyper-spectral images to be processed, band selection is utilized. Existing band selection techniques are heuristic techniques based on statistics, which take a long time and often lack generality and universality. To compensate for this, this paper utilizes quantization concept to draw representative bands through Discrete Range, we use them for band selection algorithm. Experimental results showed that the proposed technique performed much faster than conventional band selection methods, and that the performance accuracy was similar to that of the original even though the number of bands was reduced by one-seventh to one-tenth.

  • In this paper, we study the positive solutions to a discrete harmonic function for a random walk satisfying finite range and ellipticity conditions, killed at the boundary of an unbounded cylinder in ℤd. We first prove the existence and uniqueness of positive solutions, and then establish that all the positive solutions are generated by two special solutions, which are exponential growth at one end and exponential decay at the other. Our method is based on maximum principle and a Harnack type inequality.

  • In this study we decompose the 3-dimensional velocity field of isotropic turbulent flow into the coherent and the incoherent structure using the discrete wavelet. It is shown that the coherent structure, 3% wavelet modes, has 98% energy and 88% enstrophy and its statistical characteristics are almost same as the original turbulence structure. And it is confirmed that the role of the coherent structure is that it produces the turbulent kinetic energy at the inertia range then transfers energy to the dissipation range. The incoherent structure, with residual wavelet modes, is uncorrelated and has the Gaussian probability density function but it dissipates the kinetic energy in dissipation range. On the procedure, we propose a new but easy way to get the threshold by applying the energy partition percentage concept about coherent structure. The vorticity field extracted from the wavelet-decomposed velocity field has the same structure as the result of the precedent studies which decomposed vorticity field directly using wavelet. Therefore it has been shown that velocity and vorticity field are on the interactive condition.

  • In this paper, a fractal image coding based on discrete wavelet transform is proposed to improve PSNR at low bit rates and reduce computational complexity of encoding process. The proposed method takes the absolute value of discrete wavelet transform coefficients, and then constructs significant coefficients trees, which indicate the positions and signs of the significant coefficients. This method improves PSNR and reduces computational complexity of mapping contracted domain pool onto range block, by matching only the significant coefficients of range block to coefficients of contracted domain block. Also, this paper proposes a classification scheme which minimizes the number of contracted domain blocks compared with range block. This scheme significantly reduces the number of range and contracted domain block comparison.

  • In the conventional fractal image compression in the DWT(discrete wavelet transform), the domain and range blocks were classified as B${\times}$B block size first before all domain block for each range block was searched. The conventional method has a disadvantages that the encoding time takes too long, since the domain block for entire image was searched. As an enhancement to such inefficiencies and image quality, this paper proposes wavelet-based fractal image compression with multiscale factors. Thus, this proposed method uses multiscale factor along each level and band to enhance an overall image quality. In encoding process of this method, the range blocks are not searched for all the domain blocks; however, using the self affine system the range blocks are selected from the blocks in the upper level. The image qualify of the conventional method is 32.30[dB], and the proposed method is 35.97[dB]. The image quality is increased by 3.67[dB].

  • Discrete element analysis is used to map various log-normal particle size distributions into measures of the in-sphere pore size distribution. Combinations evaluated range from monosized spheres to include bimodal mixtures and various log-normal distributions. The latter proves most useful in providing a mapping of one distribution into the other (knowing the particle size distribution we want to predict the pore size distribution). Such metrics show predictions where the presence of large pores is anticipated that need to be avoided to ensure high sintered properties.
