  • When a spatial method of moments(MoM) is used in conjunction with closed-form Greens functions for the analysis of a general microstrip structures of thin or thick substrate, an efficient technique fur the evaluation of MeM off-diagonal matrix elements as well as diagonal elements is proposed. In order to check the validity of the present method, performance is demonstrated for the example of a coaxially-fed microstrip antenna and the present results are compared with the previous results.

  • Function approximation is one of the most important and active research fields in design optimization. Accurate function approximations can reduce the repetitive computational effort fur system analysis. So this study presents an enhanced two-point diagonal quadratic approximation method. The proposed method is based on the Two-point Diagonal Quadratic Approximation method. But unlike TDQA, the suggested method has two quadratic terms, the diagonal term and the correction term. Therefore this method overcomes the disadvantage of TDQA when the derivatives of two design points are same signed values. And in the proposed method, both the approximate function and derivative values at two design points are equal to the exact counterparts whether the signs of derivatives at two design points are the same or not. Several numerical examples are presented to show the merits of the proposed method compared to the other forms used in the literature.

  • Local Binary Pattern (LBP) is becoming a popular tool for various machine vision applications such as face recognition, classification and background subtraction. In this paper, we propose a new extension of LBP, called the Diagonal LBP (DLBP), to handle the image-based gender classification problem arise in interactive display systems. Instead of comparing neighbor pixels with the center pixel, DLBP generates codes by comparing a neighbor pixel with the diagonal pixel (the neighbor pixel in the opposite side). It can reduce by half the code length of LBP and consequently, can improve the computation complexity. The Support Vector Machine is utilized as the gender classifier, and the texture profile based on DLBP is adopted as the feature vector. Experimental results revealed that our approach based on the diagonal LPB is very efficient and can be utilized in various real-time pattern classification applications.

  • This study highlights the accuracy of several single strut models to predict the global response of infilled reinforced concrete (R/C) frames. To this aim, six experimental tests are selected to calibrate the numerical modeling. The width of the diagonal strut is calculated using several macro models from the literature. The mechanical properties of the diagonal strut are determined by using two methods: (a) by subtracting the bare frame response from that of the infilled frame, and (b) by calculating the axial strength in the diagonal direction. A combination between the different width and the axial force models is carried out to study the effects of each parameter on global response. Non-linear pushover analyses are conducted using SAP2000. The results indicate the accuracy of the macro-modeling approach to predict the behavior of the infilled frames.

  • We present a new dual sequential approximate optimization (SAO) algorithm called SD-TDQAO (sequential dual two-point diagonal quadratic approximate optimization). This algorithm solves engineering optimization problems with a nonlinear objective and nonlinear inequality constraints. The two-point diagonal quadratic approximation (TDQA) was originally non-convex and inseparable quadratic approximation in the primal design variable space. To use the dual method, SD-TDQAO uses diagonal quadratic explicit separable approximation; this can easily ensure convexity and separability. An important feature is that the second-derivative terms of the quadratic approximation are approximated by TDQA, which uses only information on the function and the derivative values at two consecutive iteration points. The algorithm will be illustrated using mathematical and topological test problems, and its performance will be compared with that of the MMA algorithm.

  • In this paper, a method called bilateral diagonal 2DLDA is proposed for face recognition. Two methods called Dia2DPCA and Dia2DLDA were suggested to reserve the correlations between the variations in the rows and columns of diagonal images. However, these methods work in the row direction of these images. A row-directional projection matrix can be obtained by calculating the between-class and within-class covariance matrices making an allowance for the column variation of alternative diagonal face images. In addition, column-directional projection matrix can be obtained by calculating the between-class and within-class covariance matrices making an allowance for the row variation in diagonal images. A bilateral projection scheme was applied using left and right multiplying projection matrices. As a result, the dimension of the feature matrix and computation time can be reduced. Experiments carried out on an ORL face database show that the proposed method with three different distance measures, namely, Frobenius, Yang and AMD, is more accurate than some methods, such as 2DPCA, B2DPCA, 2DLDA, etc.

  • A mechanical model was developed to predict the behavior of point-loaded RC slender beams (a/d > 2.5) without stirrups. It is commonly accepted by most researchers that a diagonal tension crack plays a predominant role in the failure mode of these beams, but the failure mechanism of these members is still debatable. In this paper, it was assumed that diagonal tension failure was triggered by the concrete cover splitting due to the dowel action at the initial location of diagonal tension cracks, which propagate from flexural cracks. When concrete cover splitting occurred, the shape of a diagonal tension crack was simultaneously developed, which can be determined from the principal tensile stress trajectory. This fictitious crack rotates onto the crack tip with load increase. During the rotation, all forces acting on the crack (i.e, dowel force of longitudinal bars, vertical component of concrete tensile force, shear force by aggregate interlock, shear force in compression zone) were calculated by considering the kinematical conditions such as crack width or sliding. These forces except for the shear force in the compression zone were uncoupled with respect to crack width and sliding by the proposed constitutive relations for friction along the crack. Uncoupling the shear forces along the crack was aimed at distinguishing each force from the total shear force and clarifying the failure mechanism of RC slender beams without stirrups. In addition, a proposed method deriving the dowel force of longitudinal bars made it possible to predict the secondary shear failure. The proposed model can be used to predict not only the entire behavior of point-loaded RC slender shear beams, but also the ultimate shear strength. The experiments used to validate the proposed model are reported in a companion paper.

  • In this paper it was focused on the characteristics of displacement and stress due to the construction of diagonal twin tunnel. In this research, the characteristics have been analyzed with the presumption that the tunnel's diameter (D) is 13m and the ground was formed by weathered rock. In analysis, the width of pillar is 2.0D, 2.5D, 3.0D, the height of soil cover is 3D, 4D, 5D, and the installation angle of diagonal twin tunnel has been changed into $15^{\circ}$, $30^{\circ}$, $45^{\circ}$. And the program used in this analysis is FLAC which is widely used in solution problems of ground engineering in order to gain and analyze occurring shotcrete and rockbolt stress and nearby ground displacement according to pillar width, the height of soil cover and installation angle of diagonal twin tunnel. As a result, in the weathered rock grounds, when the width of pillar is more than 2.0D, the height of soil cover is over 5.0D, and the installation angle of diagonal twin tunnel is lower, they lessen effects on the ground and favorable on the stability of tunnel.
