  • Objectives: This study was carried out to provide basic materials to draw up measures for courses operation and effective clinical practice operation for the cultivation of future effective problem solving ability by identifying the relationship between problem solving ability and clinical practice satisfaction of dental hygiene students. Methods: This study targeted 215 dental hygiene students from 3 universities located in Gyeonggi-do from November 30 to December 4, 2015. We analyzed the data with frequency analysis, descriptive statistics, t-test. One-way ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficient, Regression analysis by using SPSS. Results: Clinical practice satisfaction between grades according to the general characteristics of the study subjects was analyzed and as a result, clinical practice satisfaction showed a significant difference depending on grade (t=-2.355, p=.019), major satisfaction(F=9.548, p=.000), health status(F=4.909, p=.008). The problem solving ability according to the general characteristics of the study subjects was compared and as a result, the problem solving ability score of students 'living apart from their family or living in lodgings' was found to be higher than that of students 'living with their family' (p=.023) and the problem solving ability of students who answered 'satisfied' with their major was higher than that of students who answered 'moderate' (p=.000). As the problem solving ability and major satisfaction are higher and health status is better, clinical practice satisfaction showed higher results (p<.01). Conclusions: The above results showed a correlation between the problem solving ability and clinical practice satisfaction of dental hygiene students and clinical practice satisfaction showed higher scores as the problem solving ability level was higher. Therefore, efforts to enhance dental hygiene students' clinical practice satisfaction are considered necessary by developing and providing a program to strengthen students' problem solving ability.

The relationship between the elderly oral health specialist education experience and the attitude toward the elderly was influenced by the attitude toward the elderly (r=0.160, p<0.01), the experience of the elderly oral tissue regeneration education was related to the attitude toward the elderly (r=0.178, p<0.01), and feeding and swallowing function training education was positively correlated with the attitude toward the elderly (r=0.173, p<0.01). Therefore, it is necessary to develop curriculum in the maintenance training course for the dental hygienists who are experts in oral health care for the elderly, and to develop the curriculum for elderly dental hygiene course in the school education.

Their oral health awareness was investigated, and what factors might affect their actual oral health practice was observed. An then a comparative analysis was conducted. Followings are the main results of this study. First, when the characteristics of the self-rated oral health of the college students were analyzed, the dental hygiene students were ahead of the other students who didn't major in dental hygiene in every factor including oral health concern(p<0.001), awareness of oral health importance(p<0.01) and self-perceived oral health status(p<0.01). Second, the dental hygiene students significantly excelled the other students in both the level of oral health awareness(p<0.001) and the level of oral health practice(p<0.001). The findings of the study showed that more oral health education experiences led to better oral health awareness and better oral health practice, and that better oral health awareness led to better oral health practice.

  • This study intends to present a desirable vision so that students can focus on their studies and adapt to the dental hygiene major education perceived by dental hygiene students in un-contact lecturess situations by preparing measures to increase student satisfaction with the dental hygiene department. Data collection was conducted using a self-reported questionnaire from students in the dental hygiene department at universities in Seoul, Chungcheong, and Gangwon from June 20 to August 19, 2021. Variables according to the general characteristics of the subjects were analyzed using t-test and one-way ANOVA, and the post hoc test was verified by Tukey. The correlation between variables was Pearson's correlation, and the factors affecting dental hygiene and students' major satisfaction were multiple regression. The self-directed learning ability of dental hygiene students was 3.57 points, learning immersion was 3.02 points, and major satisfaction was 3.54 points. Dental hygiene students were found to have higher major satisfaction with higher grades, higher college life satisfaction, and higher learning immersion and self-directed learning ability. Therefore, it was found that systematic program development and application is necessary to improve major satisfaction in difficult circumstances due to COVID-19.

  • This study aimed to identify the convergence factor where social support, self-esteem, and job stress affect the type of anger expressions in dental hygienists. The study involved 402 hygienists from different dental institutions. Clustering analysis was carried out to classify the types, and logistics regression analysis to find the related factors. Based on the types of anger expressions found in dental hygienists, they were divided into an anger control group and anger out-in group, with the former comprising 233 participants (58%). The results show that those with higher self-esteem (OR=5.592) and enjoying greater social support from their colleagues (OR=1.172) tend to belong to the anger control group. In other words, the study suggests that dental hygienists can control anger better with higher self-esteem and stronger social support from colleagues.

  • A clinician's skills in a dental clinic are an important factor in removing the risk factors of patients. Although many universities have conducted educational programs, there has been a limitation on repeated practice because of the limited space and equipment. In dental radiography, there are various intraoral radiographic techniques. Since proficiency in radiography is an important factor in obtaining accurate radiographs, repeated practice and skill learning are important at the pre-clinical stage. However, the recent amendment of diagnostic radiation has caused difficulties in repeated practice on the human body. This study aims to develop a clinical simulator for intraoral radiography that enables repeated practice and self-directed learning without any restriction by utilizing the augmented reality technology to foster clinical skills for dental hygienist.

  • In this study, to provide the implications of dental health care training direction in the future after researching the effect on the use of dental hygiene devices, data were collected from 320 patients who visited dental clinics located in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do for about 6 months between December 2013 and May 2014. Among them, the following results were obtained by analyzing 299 copies accounting for 93.4% of the collected data after excluding 21 copies lacking in answer. It was shown that education about dental hygiene devices had statistically significant effects on the dependent variables, perception of dental hygiene devices (p<0.001). Based upon the results above, it is considered that for the sake of prevention of oral diseases, more opportunities to learn correct knowledge and usage of suitable dental hygiene devices for individual oral conditions should be provided for patients, and active patient education as well as the development, implementation and publicity of systematic and popular oral health education programs will contribute to improved oral health.
