Forecasting the Korea's Port Container Volumes With SARIMA Model (SARIMA 모형을 이용한 우리나라 항만 컨테이너 물동량 예측)

  • This paper develops a model to forecast container volumes of all Korean seaports using a Seasonal ARIMA (Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average) technique with the quarterly data from the year of 1994 to 2010. In order to verify forecasting accuracy of the SARIMA model, this paper compares the predicted volumes resulted from the SARIMA model with the actual volumes. Also, the forecasted volumes of the SARIMA model is compared to those of an ARIMA model to demonstrate the superiority as a forecasting model. The results showed the SARIMA Model has a high level of forecasting accuracy and is superior to the ARIMA model in terms of estimation accuracy. Most of the previous research regarding the container-volume forecasting of seaports have been focussed on long-term forecasting with mainly monthly and yearly volume data. Therefore, this paper suggests a new methodology that forecasts shot-term demand with quarterly container volumes and demonstrates the superiority of the SARIMA model as a forecasting methodology.

Bankruptcy Risk Level Forecasting Research for Automobile Parts Manufacturing Industry (자동차부품제조업의 부도 위험 수준 예측 연구)

  • In this paper, we report bankruptcy risk level forecasting result for automobile parts manufacturing industry. With the premise that upstream supply risk and downstream demand risk could impact on automobile parts industry bankruptcy level in advance, we draw upon industry input-output table to use the economic indicators which could reflect the extent of supply and demand risk of the automobile parts industry. To verify the validity of each economic indicator, we applied simple linear regression for each indicators by varying the time lag from one month (t-1) to 12 months (t-12). Finally, with the valid indicators obtained through the simple regressions, the composition of valid economic indicators are derived using stepwise linear regression. Using the monthly automobile parts industry bankruptcy frequency data accumulated during the 5 years, R-square values of the stepwise linear regression results are 68.7%, 91.5%, 85.3% for the 3, 6, 9 months time lag cases each respectively. The computational testing results verifies the effectiveness of our approach in forecasting bankruptcy risk forecasting of the automobile parts industry.

Forecasting Model of Air Passenger Demand Using System Dynamics (시스템다이내믹스를 이용한 항공여객 수요예측에 관한 연구)

  • Korea's air passenger traffic has been growing steadily. In this paper, we propose a forecasting model of air passenger demand to ascertain the growth trend of air passenger transportation performance in Korea. We conducted a simulation based on System Dynamics with the demand as a dependent variable, and international oil prices, GDP and exchange rates as exogenous variables. The accuracy of the model was verified using MAPE and $R^2$, and the proposed prediction model was verified as an accurate prediction model. As a result of the demand forecast, it is predicted that the air passenger demand in Korea will continue to grow, and the share of low cost carriers will increase sharply. The addition of the Korean transportation performance of foreign carriers in Korea and the transportation performance of Korean passengers due to the alliance of airlines will provide a more accurate forecast of passenger demand.

An Exploratory Analysis of Locational Characteristics Impact on the Discrepancy between Predicted vs. Actual Demand of Rail Transit (전철역 입지특성이 예측된 수요와 실제 수요 간의 차이에 미치는 영향에 관한 탐색적 연구)

  • We built subway stops in order to meet demand. To do so, a standardized method is used to predict the demand. However, in some subway stops there are only few people moving around sparsely, but in some other stops there are too many people crammed in a crowd. The gap between forecasting and actual uses varies from 10% to more than 1,000%. This study is aimed to find out where this discrepancy between predicted vs. actual demand for urban rail transit comes from. Specifically, 40 subway stops in Seoul Metropolitan Area, which were opened last 10 years, are examined. This study suggests that, for better forecasting, we need to consider stops' locational characteristics as well as weekday commute-oriented exogenous factors. Locational characteristics includes; whether a stops is a terminal and/or weekend tourism node. There seems no "one size fits all" solution for transit demand forecasting; locational characteristics need to be reflected.

A Study on Proper Harbor Pilot Demand Estimation for ensuring Port Competitiveness in Korea (우리나라 항만경쟁력 확보를 위한 적정 도선사 수요산정에 관한 연구)

  • In order to propose a realistic demand forecast for harbor pilots, define a direction for securing a supply of pilots for the betterment of national logistic services, and ensure the competitiveness of Korean ports, this study intended first to propose a new forecasting process for harbor pilot requirements through conducting analysis of determining factors affecting harbor pilot demand. Additionally, analyzing relevant previous studies allowed us to estimate the number of pilots required in the past and asses the studies limitations. Our second purpose was to propose a more stable allocation method among different pilot areas after forecasting the demand of harbor pilots until 2027 through application of the new forecasting process. From this application, the total number of pilots required was forecasted at 270, suggesting the total demand for harbor pilots will be increased by 7.57% compared with 251 pilots in 2018.

  • This study tried to build a structure model for the Korean flatfish aquaculture market by a system dynamics approach. A pool of several factors to influence the market structure was built. In addition, several reasonable factors related to the flatfish aquaculture market were selected to construct the causal loop diagram (CLD). Then the related stock/flow diagrams of the causal loop diagrams were constructed. This study had been forecasting a production price and supply, demand, and consumption volume for the flatfish market by a monthly basis, and then made some validation to the forecasting. Finally, four governmental policies such as import, storage, reduction of input, and demand control were tentatively evaluated by the created model. As a result, the facts that the demand control policy is most effective, and import and storage policies are moderately effective were found.

  • In this paper, as a forecasting method, the market survey for forecasting demand is introduced for the estimation of subscriber line demand in the optical access networks. The market survey method for the new multimedia services is attempted to collect information directly from customers using the questionnaires for home-users and business-users in local loops. Analysis rationale of questionnaires is suggested to estimate the number of subscriber lines. Also, two measures are presented to quantify the credibility on survey responses; one is the probability that the customer will use the multimedia services and the other is the rate that the subscriber line demand will be actually realized. The former measure is calculated based on the information on customers and the Logit analysis. The latter is obtained by the degree of customer's knowledge about specific services and the customer's willingness to use the services. Based on the values of two measures, the number of subscriber line demand can be developed for installing the optical access networks.

  • Currently energy use planning council system is mandatory especially for the urban development project planned on a specified scale or more. The goal of existing demand prediction was to calculate the maximum load by multiplying energy load per unit area by building size. The result of this method may be exaggerated and has a limit in the information of period load. The paper suggests a new forecasting process based on standard unit household in order to upgrade the limit in demand prediction method of multi-family housing complex. The new process was verified by comparing actual using amount of multi-family housing complex to forecasting value of energy use plan.

  • This study's purpose is to forecast the market demand of UVS (u-Transportation Vehicle Sensor) OBU (On-board Unit) of the ubiquitous Transportation. Bass model, Logistic model, and Gompertz model were used for the forecasting market demand. Firstly, this research focused on the market size for the u-T OBU. All three models were used for the market size prediction and the average values were used. The Bass model were calibrated and the market demand for the UVS OBU of the u-Transportation system were estimated using this model.

  • Forecasting the daily peak load for electricity demand is an important issue for future power plants and power management. We first introduce several time series models to predict the peak load for electricity demand and then compare the performance of models under the RMSE(root mean squared error) and MAPE(mean absolute percentage error) criteria.
