This article uses the ALL(Adult Literacy and Life Skills) 2005 data in Korea. The factors which form the basic job skills are school years, father's education. Women are under men in the ability of computer using. The older a man grow, the more basic job skills he has, but the less ability of computer using he has. The employees in office worker or new service industry have more using computer ability than them in sales worker or manufacture industry. The wage effects of the basic job skills are insignificant, and the economic effects of basic job skills appear apparently in the entry into the good jobs. As the basic job skills can play a important role to enter into the good jobs, the policy agenda should make deal with the methods and programs through which the people without basic job skills must have the opportunities to get a lifelong learning for the basic job skills.

  • Objectives: This study aimed to investigate North Korean refugees' knowledge of mental illnesses and treatments and analyze the factors affecting this knowledge. Methods: Subjects were selected via a snowball sampling method, and the survey outcomes of 152 North Korean refugee participants were analyzed. The factors affecting knowledge of mental illnesses were analyzed via a regression analysis by constructing a multivariate model with mental illness knowledge score as the dependent variable. Results: The North Korean refugees' mental illness scores ranged from 3 to 24 points, with an average score of 13.0. Regarding the factors that influence mental illness knowledge, the subjects with South Korean spouses and those who had spent more time in South Korea had higher knowledge scores. Furthermore, the subjects who considered the mental health of North Korean refugees to be a serious issue revealed lower knowledge scores than those who did not believe it was a serious issue. The subjects who visit psychiatric clinics showed higher knowledge scores than those who do not. The South Korean subjects who had at least a college education exhibited higher scores than did those without advanced education. The subjects who are satisfied with life in South Korea manifested a higher mental illness knowledge score than those who are not. Conclusions: This study is significant as being the first study to ever measure and evaluate the level of North Korean refugees' knowledge of mental illnesses. In addition, the evaluations of North Korean refugees' mental illness knowledge and influencing factors while residing in South Korea created basic data that formed the foundation of an effort to enhance mental health literacy and provide proper mental health services. The results of this study can be utilized to solve mental health problems that might frequently occur during the unification process of North and South Korea in the future.

  • There has been an agreement on the necessity for each citizen is to be educated, so called, to develop quantitative literacy or statistical literacy, dealing with real world data. For this reason, it is highly demanded to improve traditional statistics education. In particular, critical thought and statistical communication competency cultivation is becoming more crucial in statistics classes. In line with this reform movement in statistics education, we developed tasks facilitating statistical debate among students through inducing cognitive conflict. The tasks employed for this study resulted in playing crucial role to activate statistical debate. Including aforementioned feature about the tasks for this study, we obtained several positive results such as promoting critical thought and conceptual extension by designed teaching experiment focusing on statistical debate.

  • The aim of this study is providing basic data to design successful in-service training program for teacher librarians by analyzing their preference on subjects of customized intensive programs for indicators of teacher expertise development. According to the survey, teacher librarians seem to regard training subjects such as Reading Education and Information Literacy Instruction related educational information services as core jobs and prefer developing instructional contents and materials. Under the levels of school it seems that teacher librarians in the elementary school are interested in programs for library activation, management of volunteers, analyses of users' needs and curricula, evaluations of user instruction and information literacy instruction. Older teacher librarians favor an understanding of metadata, building and supporting information system and instruction. Therefore, training subjects for teacher librarians should be formed by linking strategies between school library instruction and subject curricula. And in terms of the method of training, case studies and practical training might be better than lectures based on the theory.

  • The purpose of this study is to categorize and analyze the communication competency of engineering undergraduates and to develop educational content in order to improve that. In this study, communication competency of engineering undergraduates was categorized into three areas: critical thinking, scientific communication, and media literacy. As a means to improve communication competency, the experience with and perception of writing were investigated. The communication competency of undergraduates needs to be improved overall. There is a high need for writing programs that enhance critical thinking oriented around practice. It suggests flipped learning based on smart education, E-community, problem-solving programs based on action learning, cooperative learning programs, reflection journals & portfolio, and collaborative writing programs as educational content. The results of this study can be used as basic data to design competency-based communication curriculum and practical applications for engineering undergraduates.

The processes of their scientific actions were investigated and categorized inductively based on three stages: problem recognition stage, information collection and analysis stage, and sharing and spreading stage. As a result, in the 'problem recognition' stage, two participants recognized the seriousness of the fine dust problem as they felt a threat to their health and began to act practically by questioning the accuracy of public data. In the 'information collection and analysis' stage, a participant collected as much information as possible and compared them in order to obtain more accurate information for her situation. On the other hand, another participant conducted various experiments in person to get the information which is appropriate to his situation. Finally, in the 'Sharing and Spreading' stage, both participants created and shared various materials based on online environment, and continued their activities with a sense of contribution through others assistance. Educational implications are discussed in terms of civic science education and scientific literacy.

  • This study explored the user's information needs and information behavior for the development of academic library services. The content analysis of qualitative data showed that the in-depth interview participants have six types of information needs such as 'suitability, up-to-dateness, uniqueness, reliability, practicality, and convenience' while going through societal, educational, and research-related changes. Interview participants solved their information needs by acquiring the resources necessary for each individual's task through information behaviors using information media, human resources and the places. Each participant tried to solve his/her information problem through individual efforts based on their different media and information utilization capabilities. Based on the analysis, this study presented four directions in the development of academic library services. They are an personalized information literacy service, a space to meet the characteristics of information needs, an infrastructure platform for exchanging human resources, and an accessible support service for utilizing information media.

  • This study analyzes the perception survey of the general public on the problems of a neologism(new words), which are frequently used in media media, and derives improvement measures and implications based on the data. In general, it can be seen that the creed is exposed and used indiscriminately through media, and those in their 20s and 30s are positive for the use of new words and those in their 50s and 60s are relatively negative. The biggest problem is that excessive use of creed can cause conflict and alienation between generations, and the need for correct Korean use is recognized overall as it can enhance Hangeul destruction and inappropriate social awareness. However, media outlets often use new words in a positive way to induce interest and enrich content by using them in the right place for the latest trends, such as small but certain happiness. As an alternative to this problem, self-purification of media workers is the most important, and it is recommended to encourage proper use of Korean through media literacy education and campaigns.
