  • The Skeleton Tower problem is an example of a curriculum that integrates algebra and geometry. Finding the number of the cubes in the tower can be approached in more than one way, such as counting arithmetically, drawing geometric diagrams, enumerating various possibilities or rules, or using algebraic equations, which makes the tasks accessible to students with varied prior knowledge and experience. So, it will be a good topic which can be used in the elementary grades if we exclude the method of using algebraic equations. The purpose of this paper is to propose some points which can be considered with attention by gifted children education teachers by analyzing the 4th Skeleton Tower problem solutions made by 3rd and 4th graders in their selection test who applied for the education of gifted children in math at J University for the year of 2010.

  • This study is to verify the effectiveness of initial planning verification using paper prototyping while methodologies are being developed to verify the direction of game planning in a short time at low cost since it is having a hard time to verify the direction and fun of the game by taking a lot of capital and time in the initial planning process as the game development becomes larger. It conducted paper prototyping production for about 40 students who are learning game planning for a semester, and trained them on how to motivate using core mechanical diagrams, scrums, and basic psychological needs that can effectively materialize the ideas of their early game planning. Through this curriculum, board games were completed with eleven paper prototyping, and it was confirmed that students who participated in the class were meaningful in verifying fun and securing gameability through cross-play.

  • In this study, we investigated pre-service science teachers' design for lessons using analogies in the perspectives of PCK. Three pre-service science teachers at a college of education in Seoul participated in this study. After the workshop of instructional analogies in science education, they practiced lessons using analogies in teaching practices. We observed their lessons and collected all of the teaching-learning materials. Semi-structured interviews were also conducted. The analyses of the results reveal that they dealt with mapping and unshared attribute only when using main analogies in their lessons and these processes were teacher-centered. There were some cases where they failed to adequately deal with analogies including concepts beyond the curriculum. When dealing with unshared attributes, they did not tend to accept students' opinions although they thought that unshared attributes are strongly related to misconceptions. Their understanding of assessment using analogies was not high. Assessment was relatively well done when they use student-centered analogies such as physical analogies or role-playing analogies. On the bases of the results, we suggest some educational implications for pre-service science teacher education.

  • Purpose: To analyze the job of nursing unit managers working at women's hospital, using DACUM (developing a curriculum), DACUM is a method for analyzing job-focused competency. Methods: This study involved a descriptive survey. A DACUM workshop was held to define women's hospital nursing unit managers' role and identify their duties and tasks. For the workshop, a committee was formed consisting of 5 women's hospital nursing unit managers. Finally, after validation, the developed contents were made into a survey asking about nursing unit manager's duties and tasks. Results: Sixteen duties and 83 tasks were identified on the DACUM chart. The importance, difficulty, and frequency of the tasks were ranked in terms of A, B, and C, with A being the highest degree. Eight tasks received A's all in importance, difficulty, and frequency of performance. The 8 tasks were: 'taking over', 'taking care of seriously ill patients on handover', 'ward rounding', 'analyzing and resolving demands identified during handover and patient tour', 'reporting patient status during rounding', 'promoting breast-feeding', 'uterine contraction, and training for breast-feeding'. The duty with the biggest determinant coefficient (DC) was 'patients complaint management' (DC=7.09). Based on tasks, the one with the biggest DC was 'solving patient and patient guardian's complaints' (DC=7.53), followed by 'making infection control guidelines' (DC=7.5). Conclusion: When expanding the nursing staff of the hospital, women's hospitals nursing unit managers also need to use administrative functions as intermediaries to focus on the operation management of the entire hospital rather than direct nursing to suit their role.

  • In this paper, we examine the effectiveness of calculation according to automation, which is one of Computational Thinking, by coding the conceptual process into Python language, focusing on the concept of divisibility in elementary school textbooks. The educational implications of these considerations are as follows. First, it is possible to make a field of learning that can revise the new mathematical concept through the opportunity to reinterpret the Conceptual Thinking learned in school mathematics from the perspective of Computational Thinking. Second, from the analysis of college students, it can be seen that many students do not have mathematical concepts in terms of efficiency of computation related to the divisibility. This phenomenon is a characteristic of the mathematics curriculum that emphasizes concepts. Therefore, it is necessary to study new mathematical concepts when considering the aspect of utilization. Third, all algorithms related to the concept of divisibility covered in elementary mathematics textbooks can be found to contain the notion of iteration in terms of automation, but little recursive activity can be found. Considering that recursive thinking is frequently used with repetitive thinking in terms of automation (in Computational Thinking), it is necessary to consider low level recursive activities at elementary school. Finally, it is necessary to think about mathematical Conceptual Thinking from the point of view of Computational Thinking, and conversely, to extract mathematical concepts from computer science's Computational Thinking.

  • This study was conducted to determine the types of nurse's image in nurses and nursing students by using Q-methodology. Total 40 Q-samples were extracted from Q-population consisted of the 385 statements, which were collected from 135 nurses with more than one year clinical experience in H city and 250 nursing students at H university. The Q-sample classification was conducted by 10 nurses and 40 nursing students, and data were analyzed by using PQ method program. As results, the types of nurse's images were derived as 'textbooked', 'realistic' and 'periodic.' This study was meaningful in analyzing the types of nurse image from both nurses and nursing students. In order to improve the image of nurses, we propose not only to develop a systematic nursing curriculum but also to develop health and medical policies reflecting reality of care settings.
