The biodegradable hyaluronic acid(HA) membranes cross-linked with lactide using the crosslinking agent, 1-ethyl-3(3-dimethyl aminopropyl) carbodiimide(EDC) were prepared as a potential biocompatible material for tissue engineering. HA membranes having different mechanical properties were synthesised by varying degree of the mole ratio of lactide to HA, EDC concentration, and crosslinking temperature. HA membranes were degradable in water solution and the degradation became slower with the increasing mole ratio of lactide to HA. HA membranes were sterilized using ethylene oxide gas and extracted with cell culture medium for 24 h at $37^{\circ}C$ and 200 rpm. Cytotoxicity of the extract was tested using NIH/3T3 mouse embryo fibroblast as a model cell. Growth inhibition was not observed in the extracts of HA membranes with the mole ratios of lactide to HA, 5 or 10, and 10% EDC concentration, however 11% of growth inhibition was observed in the extract with the mole ratio of 13. Growth inhibition was not observed in the extracts of HA membranes prepared with 5% EDC or 10% EDC and the mole ratio of lactide to HA, 10, however 12% of growth inhibition was observed in the extract with 20% EDC. Cytotoxicity was not observed in the extracts of HA membranes prepared at varying crosslinking temperatures, $15^{\circ}C,\;25^{\circ}C,\;and\;28^{\circ}C$ with the mole ratio of lactide to HA, 10 and 10% EDC.
Screening was performed to isolate cellulose-producing microorganisms from the Korean traditional fermented persimmon vinegar. The resulting strain, KJ $145^{T}$, was then taxonomically investigated by phenotypic characterization, particularly chemotaxonomic, and by phylogenetic inference based on a 16S rDNA sequence analysis including other related taxa. Strain KJ $145^{T}$ was found to grow rapidly and form pale white colonies with smooth to rough surfaces on a GYC agar. Strain KJ $145^T$ also produced acetate from ethanol, and was tolerable to 10% ethanol in SM medium. In a static culture, a thick cellulose pellicle was produced, and in GYC broth, the strain grew at temperatures ranging from 28 to $40^\circ{C}$ with an optimum pH of 4.0. The genomic DNA G+C content of strain KJ $145^T$ was 61.9 mol%, and the predominant ubiquinone was Q 10 as the major quinone and Q9 as the minor quinone. The major cellular fatty acids were $C_{16:0}$ and the sum in feature 7 ($C_{18:1}$ w9c, w12t and/or w7c). A 16S rRNA-targeted oligonucleotide probe specific for strain KJ $145^T$was constructed, and the phylogenetic position of the new species was derived from a 16S rDNA-based tree. When comparing the 16S rDNA nucleotide sequences, strain KJ $145^T$ was found to be most closely related to G. hansenii LMG $1527^T$ (99.2%), although KJ $145^T$ was still distinct from G. hansenii LMG $l527^T$ and G. xylinus LMG $1515^T$ in certain phenotypic characteristics. Therefore, on the basis of 16S rDNA sequences and taxonomic characteristics, it is proposed that strain KJ $145^T$ should be placed in the genus Gluconacetobacter as a new species, Gluconacetobacter persimmonis sp. nov., under the type-strain KJ $145^T$ (=KCTC =$10175BP^T$=KCCM=$10354^T$).
We explored the possibilities of using the freshwater rotifer Brachionus angularis as a live food for small fishes cultured in fresh- or brackish waters. Brachionus angularis were collected from a reservoir for isolation and laboratory culture. Length and width of the lorica were $102.3{\mu}m$ and $76.6{\mu}m$, respectively, and those of amictic eggs were $64.4{\mu}m\;and\;47.9{\mu}m$, respectively. When their growth rates were examined at six different temperatures, i.e., 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, and $40^{\circ}C$, the highest daily growth rate of 0.801 was observed at $35^{\circ}C$, and growth was lower with decreasing temperature. Adaptation to salinity change was evaluated with two different modes of salinity increase: step-wise elevation lasting for short durations of 5 to 30 min or a long duration of 24 h. With the short duration modes, no individuals survived salinity higher than 10 psu, and the number of live individuals did not increase throughout the experiment. However, in the 24-h elevation, the number of individuals increased when salinity was elevated by 1 to 2 psu per day for the first 2 or 3 days, while no increase in number occurred at salinity increments higher than 3 psu per day. In addition, to assess the effect of different diets, four single-component diets (Chlorella vulgaris, Nannochloris sp., baker's yeast, or dry yeast) and three combination diets (C. vulgaris + Nannochloris sp. + baker's yeast + dry yeast; C. vulgaris 70% + baker's yeast 30%; C. vulgaris 30% + baker's yeast 70%) were used. The specific growth rates of B. angularis fed combination diets were higher than those of rotifers fed any single-component diet, with the highest rate of 0.648 in B. angularis fed a mixture of C. vulgaris, Nannochloris sp., baker's yeast, and dry yeast, and the lowest rate of 0.200 in those fed dry yeast only. Our results indicate that the freshwater rotifer B. angularis can be used for seedling production of both freshwater and brackish-water fishes that require small (less than about $120{\mu}m$) live food during their early stages.

Nerine was originated from South Africa and around 30 kinds of species are distributed in worldwide. In present study we have characterized the division methods and growing conditions for the bulb propagation of Nerine. Result indicated that new bulb formation, and growth of N. bowdenii cultivars was better after dormancy stage compared to post-harvest and dormancy stages, under twin-scale method at $20^{\circ}C$ Similarly, new bulb tissue density was higher at $20^{\circ}C$ compared to other temperatures. Moreover, N. bowdenii 'Favourite' exhibited better growth than N. bowdenii 'Stepanii' and vermiculite was found to be most suitable growing medium for Nerine bulb propagation.
Growth rate, first reproductive age, life span and total offspring numbers were measured to study the effects of water temperature and salinity on the propagation of rotifer, Brachionus plicatilis. Three types of rotifer, Large (L), Small (S) and Thailand Small (TS)-types, were cultured in the $4\times4$ factorial culture conditions with four different salinities (5, 15, 25 and $35\%o$) at each of four different water temperatures (15, 20, 25 and $29^{\circ}C$). The results are as follows; Under the 4 different salinity gradients %$(5\%o,\;15\%o,\;25\%o,\;and\;35\%o)\;at\;29^{\circ}C$, the mean growth rates of L, Sand TS-type were 0.60, 0.84 and 0.96, respectively. The first reproductive age of three types rotifer appeared to be early at high water temperature. The total offspring numbers of the three types were higher at $25^{\circ}C\;and\;29^{\circ}C$, with the maximum value of 28.3 on the average at $29^{\circ}C$ for TS-type, and the minimum value at $15^{\circ}C$ for S-type. Life span decreased with high water temperature and increased with low water temperature. L-type and TS-type rotifer showed the longest life span of 13.5 days on the average at $15^{\circ}C$, and S-type showed shortest 6.2 days on the average at $29^{\circ}C$.

The objective of this study was to select the right species among Agastache in the family Lamiaceae as the result of growth analysis and functional substance analysis. Among 22 species of Agastache, five species (Agastache cana, Agastache foeniculum, Agastache rugosa 'Spike Blue', Agastache rugosa 'Spike Snow', Agastache rupestris) were selected by referring to United States Department of Agriculture (USDA)'s plant hardiness zone area and Korea's one based on USDAs. These plants were cultured at 24 ± 1℃ and 18 ± 1℃ (day and night temperatures, respectively) and 65 ~ 75% relative humidity in a hydroponic culture system for 4 weeks. In terms of growth analysis experiment, stem length, root length, leaf width, leaf area, leaf number, SPAD value, and fresh and dry weights of shoots and roots were measured. The results showed that A. rugosa SS and A. rugosa SB have a higher overall balance value than other species. When compared functional substance value (rosmarinic acid, tilianin, and acacetin) of five species, A. rugosa SS and A. rugosa SB are significantly higher than other species in Agastache. It seems to be directly proportional to the growth analysis results. When considering the growth and functional substance part comprehensively, A. rugosa SS and A. rugosa SB are the most optimal high-value species among Agastache.
A first, we made white strain 'S line' adaptable to elevated temperature after collected brown strains were characterized with culture characterization on temperature and their monokaryons isolated at the high temperature were crossed with white strain. These S line monokaryons were crossed again with other monokaryons derived from a commercial white. As a result of successive crossing, finally a new variety 'Baengno' was developed. The optimum temperature of mycelial growth was $25^{\circ}C$ but it needed to adjust to $18{\sim}20^{\circ}C$ when incubated at the bottle cultivation. It brought incubation period shortening as 21 days saved 2~3 days when compared with other white varieties. The optimum temperatures of fruiting body initiation and development were almost same to others like as $14^{\circ}C$ and $7^{\circ}C$, respectively. Fruiting body of 'Baengno' was pure white even developed from crossing with brown strains. 'Baengno' was a good variety with high quality and high productivity characterized as quite even budding habit, long stipes and hemi-spherical pilei. This variety needed more air ventilation and had to be adjusted its cultivation environment for the good cultivation.

In this study, we observed optimal conditions and suitable bacteria for the fermentation of steam-dried ginseng berry extracts (SGB) and determined antioxidant effects of the fermented extracts. Five bacteria (Lactobacillus fermentarum, L. plantarum, L. brevis, L. casei, Bacillus subtillis) were examined on their growth activities and viabilities in various culture temperatures ($25-35^{\circ}C$) and concentrations (25-100%). L. plantarum was considered to be the most suitable bacteria for the fermentation in both growth activity and viability. Moreover, the extracts fermented with L. plantarum showed more potent antioxidant efficacy in both 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl radical and hydroxyl radical scavenging assay. High performance liquid chromatography analysis revealed that fermentation with L. plantarum changed the contents and components of ginsenosides. In conclusion, these data suggest that L. plantarum efficiently ferment SGB and the fermented extracts may have therapeutical values against oxidative stress and be a good candidate in adjuvant therapy where ginsenoside would be the main composition.
The antimicrobial activity of Curcuma aromatica Salab. was investigated. The Curcuma aromatica Salab. extract showed antimicrobial activity against six pathogens tested. These were Listeria monocytogenes ATCC 19115, Pseudomonas fluorescens ATCC 21541,Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 29273, Salmonella typhimurium ATCC 21541, vibrio parahaemolyticus ATCC 17802, and Aeromonas hydrophila KCTC 2358. Antimicrobial activity was alsonoted when the extract was tested against four isolates of Bacillus sp. purified from spoiled tofu. The growth of various pathogens was significantly inhibited (100 10,000-fold) upon growth in tryptic soy broth containing 0.05 0.2%(w/v) Curcuma aromatica Salab. extract(CE), after incubation for 12hr at $37^{\circ}C$. The growth of the four Bacillus isolates was also significantly inhibited in nutrient broth containing 0.05 0.2% CE after incubation for 24hr at $37^{\circ}C$. Although the antimicrobial activity of CE was decreased by heat treatment at temperatures above $80^{\circ}C$, the activity remained relatively high after heat treatment at $121^{\circ}C$ for 15min. The minimum inhibitory concentrations of CE were 0.1 0.3%(v/v culture) for the six pathogens, and 0.2 0.25% for the Bacillus isolates, respectively.

In this study, to select strains suitable as microbial agent from among rhizosphere microorganisms present in rhizosphere soil and roots, the mineral solubilization ability, antifungal activity against 10 types of plant pathogenic fungi, and plant growth-promoting activity of rhizosphere microorganisms were evaluated. As a result, DDP346 was selected because it has solubilization ability of phosphoric acid, calcium carbonate, silicon, and zinc; nitrogen fixing ability; production ability of siderophore, indole-3-acetic acid, and aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylate deaminase; and antifungal activity against seven types of plant pathogenic fungi. DDP346 showed a 99.9% homology with Acinetobacter pittii DSM 21653 (NR_117621.1); phylogenetic analysis also revealed a close relationship with Acinetobacter pittii based on the 16S rRNA base sequence. The growth conditions of DDP346 were identified as temperatures in the range of 10-40 ℃, pH in the range of 5-11, and salt concentrations in the range of 0-5%. In addition, a negative correlation coefficient (r2 = -0.913, p <0.01) was shown between pH change and the solubilized phosphoric acid content of Acinetobacter sp. DDP346, and this is assumed to be due to the organic acid generated during culture. Consequently, through the evaluation of its mineral solubilization ability, antifungal activity against plant pathogenic fungi, and plant growth-promoting activity, the potential for the utilization of Acinetobacter sp. DDP346 as a multi-purpose microbial agent is presented.
