This study aims to develop a signal processing scheme to accurately predict the thickness of concrete slab using air-coupled impact-echo. Air-coupled impact-echo has been applied to concrete non-destructive tests (NDT); however, it is often difficult to obtain thickness mode frequency due to noise components. Furthermore, apparent velocity in concrete is a usually unknown parameter in the field and the thickness of the concrete slab often cannot be accurately measured. This study proposes a signal processing scheme using guided wave analysis, wherein dispersion curves are drawn in both frequency-wave number (f-k) and phase velocity-frequency ($V_{cp}-f$) domains. The theoretical and experimental results demonstrate that thickness mode frequency and apparent velocity in concrete are clearly obtained from the f-k and $V_{cp}-f$ domains, respectively. The proposed method has great potential with regard to the application of air-coupled impact-echo in the field.

The continuously variable transmission (CVT) mechanism considered here is the output coupled type which combines the functions of a 2K-H I type differential gear unit and a V-belt type continuously variable unit (CVU). One shaft of the CVU is connected directly to the output shaft and another shaft of it is linked to the differential gear unit. It is shown that some fundamental relations (speed ratios, power flows and efficiencies) for twelve mechanisms previously described are valid by various experimental studies, six of them produce a power circulation and the others produce a power split. Parametric analysis is carried out in relation to the efficiency, speed ratio and power ratios in order to assist in the design of an optimum configuration. Some useful properties associated with power flow modes also are discussed in the output coupled type continuously variable transmission.

An analytical method for the free vibration of two circular plates coupled with a fluid was developed by the Rayleigh-Ritz method. The two plates with unequal thickness and diameter are clamped along the cylindrical vessel wall. It is assumed that the fluid bounded by a rigid cylindrical vessel is incompressible and non-viscous. The wet mode shape of the circular plates is assumed as a combination of the dry mode shapes of the plates. The fluid motion is described by using the fluid displacement potential and determined by using the compatibility conditions along the fluid interface with the plate. Minimizing the Rayleigh quotient based on the energy conservation gives a eigenvalue problem. It is found that the theoretical results can predict well the fluid-coupled natural frequencies with excellent accuracy comparing with the finite element analysis result.

A large portion(above 70%) fo the hydrocorbon and NOx emissions for a typical vehicle occur mainly before the conventional underbody catalyst reaches activation temperature. To meet the stringent regulation as EC stage 2, the emissions produced during this period must be reduced. One of alternative techniques is to place CCC(Close-Coupled Catalyst) near the exhaust manifold. In this study, the characteristics of CCC are observed through EEC mode.

A formula to estimate the yield displacement observed in the pushover analysis of coupled wall lateral force-resisting systems is presented. The estimate is based on the results of an analytical study of coupled walls ranging from 8 to 20 stories in height, with varied amounts of reinforcement in the reinforced concrete coupling beams and walls, subjected to first-mode pushover analysis. An example illustrates the application of these estimates to the performance-based seismic design of coupled walls.

A simultaneous bidirectional inductively-coupled link is presented. In the conventional inductively-coupled link, data can be bidirectionally transmitted through channel, however not simultaneously. We propose simultaneous bidirectional link for higher data rate with effective echo cancellation technique. Each chip performs TX-mode and RX-mode simultaneously. Instead chip stacking for test, similar test enviroment is realized in a single chip that is fabricated in a $0.13-{\mu}m$ standard CMOS technology.

A continuously variable transmission(CVT) mechanism composed of one differential gear unit and one continuously variable unit(CVU) can be classified according to the coupling of CVU and the direction of power flows. The mechanism has many advantages which are the decrease of CVT size, the increase of overall efficiency, the extension of speed ratio range and generation of geared neutral. The CVT mechanism considered here is the input coupled type which combines the functions of a 2K-H I type differential gear unit and a V-belt type CVU. One shaft of the CVU is connected directly to the input shaft and another shaft of it is linked to the differential gear unit. It is shown that some fundamental relations(speed ratios, power flows and efficiencies) for twelve mechanisms previously described are valid by various experimental studies, six of them produce a power circulation and the others produce a power split. Some useful comparisons between theoretical analysis and experimental results are presented. General properties also are discussed, which connect following power flow modes : (a) power circulation mode; (b) power split mode.

In order to effectively utilize the Coarse Wavelength Division Multiplexing(CWDM) technology in optical integrated devices, a design of a wavelength selective coupler structure between an optical fiber and an optical waveguide in a flat substrate is can be considered. In this paper, we consider the coupling between a silicon waveguide with an air trench and a single mode fiber. We investigated the tendency of coupling efficiency and its limitations according to the grating depth. For this purpose, the coupling efficiency of coupler structure designed through modeling based on coupled mode theory is predicted and quantitatively compared with simulation results using finite element method.
Behavior of soil is usually described with continuum type of failure models such as Mohr-Coulomb or Drucker-Prager model. The main advantage of these models is in a relatively simple and efficient way of predicting the main tendencies and overall behavior of soil in failure analysis of interest for engineering practice. However, the main shortcoming of these models is that they are not able to capture post-peak behavior of soil nor the corresponding failure modes under extreme loading. In this paper we will significantly improve on this state-of-the-art. In particular, we propose the use of a discrete beam lattice model to provide a sharp prediction of inelastic response and failure mechanisms in coupled soil-foundation systems. In the discrete beam lattice model used in this paper, soil is meshed with one-dimensional Timoshenko beam finite elements with embedded strong discontinuities in axial and transverse direction capable of representing crack propagation in mode I and mode II. Mode I relates to crack opening, and mode II relates to crack sliding. To take into account material heterogeneities, we determine fracture limits for each Timoshenko beam with Gaussian random distribution. We compare the results obtained using the discrete beam lattice model against those obtained using the modified three-surface elasto-plastic cap model.
