  • This study was carried out to investigate the perception of body image, the dietary attitude, the nutrient intake and the dietary self-efficacy of middle school students in Kyoung-Nam. The survey was conducted from April 8 to April 22 in 2002. The results are summarized as follows. Twenty three point nine percents of the underweight group,24.5% of the normal weight group, 57.1% of the overweight group and 62.5% of the obese group had correct perception about their body image. Most of the students were concerned about their body image and weight control. The obesity of the parents correlated significantly with the obesity of the subjects. The higher the obesity rate, the lower the dietary attitude and dietary self-efficacy. There was a significant positive correlation between the education level of their mothers and the dietary attitude of the subjects and a significant negative correlation between the obesity rate of the subjects and their. dietary attitudes. Dietary attitude scores showed no significant difference among the groups. Intakes of calories, protein, calcium and iron were lower than those of the Korean recommended dietary allowances (RDAs). • The objective of this study is to analyze the factors increased use of environmentalfriendly agricultural product in school food service. For this, I surveyed the perceptions on environmental-friendly agricultural product and willingness-to-pay for increasing use to 500 parents of elementary, middle and high school. As a result, the perception of environment and safety is the highest, but health and consumption is the lowest. The average of willingness-to-pay is about 12,136 Won per month. But 14.2 percent of the total respondents said that they did not have a willingness-to-pay, and 62.6 percent said that they would pay an additional 10,000 won or less. The factors affecting the willingness-to-pay were gender, income, health and consumption factors. Despite the low level of parents' perception of the health and consumption factors for environmental-friendly agricultural products, health and consumption factors affect statistically significant on the willingness-to-pay compared to others. Most of the promotion and education of environmental-friendly agricultural products has focused on safety, but this study suggests that education on the health and correct consumption of environmental-friendly agricultural products is important.

  • This study researched the toothbrushing behavior and perception of oral health condition in accordance with the use of cafeteria, 280 Students of 28 high schools in Daegu and Gyeongbuk to identify the relationship between cafeteria use and oral health. and then obtained statistically significant results like below. Toothbrushing after meals and snacks was high with female students and Grade3. Rinsing mouth for ten times or more after toothbrushing was high with female students and private car while the use of oral care products was high with female students, Grade3, and private car. The whole average frequency of using cafeteria was 2.26 while the perception of oral health condition was 3.44. The frequency of using cafeteria was high with Grade2, before time for school, and lots of allowance. The perception of oral health condition was high with male students, school bus, and lots of allowance. The frequency of using cafeteria in accordance with toothbrushing behavior was high with toothbrushing for longer than three minutes(2.45) while the perception of oral health condition was high in case when using oral care products(3.32). In the results of multiple regression analysis to understand the influence of perception of oral health condition, general characteristics, and toothbrushing behavior on the frequency of using cafeteria, it was analyzed like Y(frequency of using cafeteria)=-952+.393(perception of oral health condition)- 1.721(time for school)+ .991(allowance)+ 1.124(duration of toothbrushing). Based on the results above, it would be necessary to establish the educational system to continuously practice the correct oral health care education in school.

  • Although it is well-known that environmental noise can lead to hearing loss in individuals, the true extent of subway noise effects in the general population remains poorly understood. The purpose of the present study is to see changes of acoustic reflex thresholds and speech perception scores when passengers listen to music presented from their personal listening device in the subway. Forty subjects with normal hearing participated being divided into two groups, experimental and control groups. As a baseline, all subjects were measured by acoustic reflex thresholds in five test frequencies and Korean speech perception in noise (KSPIN) test at 0 and -5 dB SNR. In the experiment, the control group read newspaper or magazine in the subway noise, whereas the experimental group listened to music presented from their smartphone under the subway noise through speakers at 73.45 dBA for 60 min. After completing the experiment, two groups also conducted both acoustic reflex thresholds and KSPIN tests in the same condition as the baseline. The results showed that there was a significant difference of correct percent in speech-in-noise test between experimental and control groups and of that between two signal-to-noise ratios, which means the double noise exposure of 60 min might cause some degradation of speech perception when noise increases compared to only subway noise condition that was not statistically significant difference. We concluded that a risk of some degraded speech perception ability would be expected when passengers have a habit of listening to music in the subway noisy situation for a long duration.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine how many plant names elementary school children how, and what kind of criteria they use for classifying these plants. The sample involved 926 students from the 2nd, the 4th, and the 6th grades dwelling in one urban, three suburban, and six rural areas. Their level of perception on the name of plants increased in correlation to the elevation of the grade level. However, different patterns of increases were shown depending on the local environments in which they live. The most well-known plant names for students were the rose of Sharon, the rose and the pine tree. The students mostly classified the plants using the following criteria such as 'with or without flower' and 'edible or inedible' regardless as to whether they had prior loaming experience of plant classification. 65.3% of the 6th graders correctly grouped 5 kinds of plants into the flowering and the non-flowering plant categories at the 1st level of classification. However, only 17.9% and 7.7% correctly divided the flowering and the non-flowering plants into two subgroups at the 2nd level of classification respectively. Therefore, their abilities in plant classification was shown overall to be poor. The students living in suburban areas appeared to be harmonized with both the natural and urbanized surroundings and classified the plants more scientifically than those from the urban or rural areas were able to. This suggests that the conception of plant classification by children is affected by the environment in which they live. If children have more opportunities to observe plants in surroundings such as their classrooms and school gardens, it will help them to form the relevant scientific concepts as well as to correct any alternative conceptions related to classification.

  • Purpose: This study was aimed to identify the status of utilization of healthcare services and self-care behaviors, knowledge level and influencing choice factors of non-prescription drugs (OTCs) on consumers since sales of OTCs at the outside of pharmacy in Korea, and to confirm the changes in perception of consumers for OTCs policy through check of perception level for current OTCs policy. Methods: Data was collected from April 2014 to May 2014 from questionnaires by 418 adults who are in university located in Seoul or live in Seoul Metropolitan area but not health science major and healthcare providers. Results: The female gender was 56.6% and University students were 73.9%. The ratio by age was as follows: below 25 (60.9%), 26-30 (18.2%), 30-40s (14.9%) and 50-60s (6.0%). The knowledge level of OTCs for use of medicine, dose and side effects was generally low and especially they knew little how to deal with side effects after taking OTCs on sale at the outside of pharmacy, even though over one year has passed since the policy. The proportion of those who thought the current OTCs policy has problems regarding safety issues since the policy was very high and it was also high that the study group thought there are problems with the current way to sale OTCs and educate employees. Conclusion: After selling OTCs at the outside of pharmacy, the consumers still lacked knowledge of OTCs and did not get correct information properly. Especially, they had little information about the way to deal with side effects after taking OTCs. Public policy should be based on the health of the people and the public health is a national health priority. When all these things are taken into consideration, the government has to strengthen the OTCs policy and provide a safer environment with the accurate drug information for people than developing OTCs policy in the future.

  • This study was designed to assess the perception and use of weaning diets and to serve as a guideline of processed weaning diets through a survey focused on the Gwangju-Jeonnam regions. The following results were obtained. Most subjects mixed 'home-made' and 'commercial' weaning diets and considered weaning diets as 'a diet for supplementing insufficient nutrition'. The most frequently used type of weaning diet was 'a kind of gruel with vegetables or meat', followed by 'boiling powder with water' and 'grinding or crushing fruits'. Two thirds (68%) of subjects had experienced buying weaning diets, mainly a powder type. The most common reason to buy weaning diets was 'troublesome', followed by 'excellent nutrition', 'convenient to go out', and 'don't know how to make'. The following results according to factors were found. The types of provided and of weaning diets were significantly different by age; the understanding of weaning diets, by education and mothers' employment; and where to get information about weaning diets, by economic status. The highest request for developing weaning diets was a type of 'powder' and 'gruel', and the highest cooking type was 'adding boiling water', followed by 'a semi-cooking product' and 'a finished product'. 'Retort pouch' package, a 'single' package unit, and 'keeping cold' were also requested by the participants. A desirable package unit in developing weaning diets was significantly different by mother's employment; the cooking type of product, by economic status; a way to keep product, by mother's employment; and package types, by education and economic status. When weaning diets were made by environmentally friendly agriculture, 69.5% of subjects were willing to purchase them. With the increase in economic status, education, and employment rate, the use of weaning diets on the market will increase. For this reason, correct nutrition education is needed. With the increasing demand for environmentally friendly agriculture, a variety of weaning diets should be developed to meet this demand.

  • Korean food habits, dietary behaviors and perception of food were compared according to gender and age. The subjects were composed of 274 males and 315 females. According to age, the age group of 10s was 26.3%, 20s 24.6%, 30s 16.8%, 40s 18.7%, and 50s and over 13.6%, respectively. The majority (65.2%) of all age groups except the 20s took meals 3 times a day and the ratio 20s eating twice a day was higher than other age groups. All age groups took cooked rice(bap) two or three times a day and the 20s group took smaller amount than other age groups did. The younger age groups of 10s and 20s took larger amount of processed food. The older age groups appeared to have higher frequency of eating fish, bean, vegetable, Kimchi, laver.brown seaweed, soybean oil, sesame oil, coffee, tea, and rice cake(ddhuk). The younger groups have the higher frequency of eating ramyeon, corn flake, milk, milk-processed food, butterㆍmargarine, ham.sausage, carbonated drink candyㆍchocolate, hamburger, and pizza. All age groups perceived cooked rice(bap), meat, fish, egg, vegetable, fruit, and Kimchi to be the delicious, excellent and healthy food. According to the above results, age groups of 30s and over had relatively better food habits compared with those of younger groups. On the other hand, the groups of 10s and 20s had meals irregularly, showed a high ratio of skipping meals, and took processed food much. These results raised a concern of their nutritional imbalance in the future. Therefore, the correct nutritional education must be conducted to make these age groups have a healthy food habits.
