  • Preliminary feasibility study on Busan metro line #1 in Yangsan line (Nopo-Bukjeong) depending on active volume of mass transportation between Yangsan city and Busan city was conducted. As the study concluded that it's valid, the necessity to establish the metro railroad network connecting to Busan, Ulsan and Gyeongnam Province is demanded to improve the transportation issues in Ungsang area vulnerable to metro service and to drive the balanced development between metropolitan cities. In addition, the volume of transportation depending on methods in target areas and road traffic assignment are surveyed to put a stress on the necessity to establish the metro railroad network. As the demand of transportation for alternative lines is predicted, the budget and benefits for construction for each alternative line set for the rough economic analysis depending on traffic volume for each method and traffic assignment results. The total project budget necessary for construction of proposal line #1 set as effective one among target three lines in this project is calculated in 794.32 billion won. Construction accounts for the most expensive in expenses for project and contingency allowances, purchases for vehicles and collateral expense are followed in orders. However, compensation for lands is not counted. In particular, according to economic analysis in proposal #1, ratio of benefit/cost (B/C) is 0.584, net present value (NPV) is -217.47 billion won, the internal rate of return (IRR) is analyzed in 0.604 %. At the current stage, it is not economically feasible, but the B/C is 0.737 in long-term upon construction of Yangsan line between Wolpheong and Yongdang which is proposal line #3. Therefore, when Busan metro basic plan is reorganized to aim the benefit of residents in Ungsang area vulnerable to the metro service, we think it must be necessary to establish the metro railroad network connecting to Busan-Yangsan-Ulsan which is proposal line #2 by extending the existing Sinjeong line and including this task line in high-ranked plan related to metro railroad.

  • Recently, mass concrete with high flowability are widely used to improve the quality and constructability in the longer span construction of prestressed concrete bridges, but it may induce nonstructural cracks due to the hydration heat and autogenous shrinkage etc. The stresses in concrete were evaluated by various experiments and numerical analysis. The tensile stress in mass concrete was increased in connection with the accumulation of hydration heat. Moreover, large amount of autogenous shrinkage from powder type admixture could add the tensile stress to mass concrete near anchorage zone. The tensile stresses in anchorage zone by heat and autogenous shrinkage exceeded the tensile strength of early stage of concrete, and small amounts of stress increasement were shown in other parts of PSC girder.

  • In this research, the value of consolidation index was investigated. The range of the investigated standard deviation was analyzed and the deviation based settlement was calculated. Also, the compression index, which is the effect of the uncertainty in the ground was analyzed using the flimsy ground construction method. The settlement behavior in each embankment compaction stage was analyzed by applying the precompression load method, drainage expediting method, and displacement method through numerical analysis. In addition to the above, the settlement behavior was studied by analyzing the Piled Raft method which is stable for long term settlement. As a result, the final settlement amount based on average analysis results was that the settlement based on each of the average interpretation value, mean value of the maximum and minimum value and average compression index was different. The result of the comparison shows the difference in variation coefficient by the difference in time. Amongst them, the Piled Raft method shows the most consistent variation coefficient regardless of time and it also was least affected by the compression index of uncertainty.

  • This paper deals with the time-dependent analysis of reinforced and prestressed concrete beams. Based on the age-adjusted effective modulus method, the structural behavior in accordance with time is analyzed using the force equilibrium and strain compatibility condition within a typical section. Unlike most of presented approaches adopting some assumptions, such as non-cracking of concrete and consideration of steel effect as a transformed concrete area only, more accurate results can be obtained at all loading conditions since all materials are considered together so as to be maintained their given properties and the cracking effect is included at the same time. Several parameter studies are conducted with the objective to identify the significance of various effects on the time-dependent response of concrete members, i.e., stress re-distribution of each material and occurrance of long-term deflection, etc. Moreover, the obtained results can be used at design and/or construction stage for the purpose of more accurate prediction of structural response with time.

  • In order to reduce the cost of corrections and time needed for the block assembly process, the reverse setting method is applied for a back-heated block to neutralize deck deformation. The proper reverse setting shape for a back-heated block to correct deformation improved the deck flatness, but an excessive amount of reverse setting could inversely affect the flatness of the block. A prediction method was developed for the proper reverse setting shape using a back-heated block, considering the complex geometry of blocks, thickness of the deck plate, and thermal loading conditions such as welding and back-heating. The prediction method was developed by combining the re-meshing technique and inherent strain-based deformation analysis using the finite element method. Because the flatness deviation was decreased until the lower critical point and thereafter it tended to increase again, the optimum value for which the flatness was the best case was selected by repeatedly calculating the predefined reverse setting values. Based on this analysis and the study of the back-heating deformation of large assembly blocks, including the reverse setting shape, the mechanism for selecting the optimum reverse setting value was identified. The developed method was applied to the actual blocks of a ship, and it was confirmed that the flatness of the block was improved. It is concluded that the developed prediction method can be used to predict the optimum reverse setting shape value of a ship's block, which will reduce the cost of corrections in the construction stage.

  • This study analyzed the working conditions and problems of screen fire shutters in the Goyang Bus Terminal fire based on the fire investigation results. At that time, screen fire shutters in the 1st basement, which was under construction, did not work because the power was shut off. Four screen fire shutters in the 1st and 3rd floor did not work despite the power not being shut off. The following problems related to a screen fire shutter were found: shutting off the power to screen fire shutters for the fire compartment on each floor, even when the fire compartments were changed in each area; installing an integral type screen fire shutter without any regulations, installing a two-stage screen fire shutter in a place not related to obstacles during evacuation; stopping the function of the screen fire shutters for a fire compartment on each floor after a combustible sandwich panel was comparted; installing a screen fire shutter over 10 meters in width, in which its performance was not verified; and no safety control standards for reinstalling or maintaining a screen fire shutter.

  • The use of face bolt method has been increasing abroad recently. Hence, many tests and measurements are being conducted and reported. Also, it is well hewn that determination of the installation number of foe bolts in the design stage is very difficult due to difference of the ground condition and the type of a bolt to be used. First of all, the type, the number, etc. of bolts used in various tunnel construction sites, investigated, are analyzed. The relationship between bolt and ground condition could not be found because bolts have been used with the other support methods in many cases. In the laboratory test and numerical analysis based on the site investigation, the behavior of ground and pipes installed on the tunnel face to support has been examined. Especially, the installed number is focused on. According to the result of tests, the surface settlement and the axial displacement of the face decrease exponentially as the number of installed bolts increases.

  • In this study, 3-D analyses were conducted while taking every construction stage into account. Then 2-D analyses were conducted which yield the same results with the 3-D results. The crown settlement normalized by the ultimate value was compared during the process to overcome the discrepancy caused by different dimensions. When a bench or a core is left uncut to give extra support to the face and eventually the whole excavation boundary, this extra supporting effect also has to be included in the analysis. In this study, this effect is also implemented in terms of the load distribution factor. When the length of the bench is very short compared to the diameter of the tunnel in such cases as in short bench cut or in mini-bench cut, the supporting effect of the face does not disappear even after the bench is completely excavated and supported since the face is still too close to the point of interest. The 4th load distribution factor was defined to stand for the advance of the face after the completion of the excavation cycle. The 4th load distribution factor turned out to be very useful in determining the load distribution factors when a tunnel is excavated by bench cut with various bench lengths under different initial conditions.

  • Space extension and the increase of the number of households are helpful to raise business value of the remodeling through the renovation of apartment houses that is required by residents of new cities and large-scaled apartment. However, in the case of accepting this demand, it could have a bad influence on the landscape of a complex in terms of the structure of apartment houses and the safety of construction and urban planning, and a problem occurs in the aspect of fairness for reconstruction. For the study, the current status related to the remodeling system through laws, related articles since 2000 and research data was analyzed. In addition, the individual quantitative analysis was conducted in the four aspects to judge whether households expansion for remodeling is plausible:1) Statistical data to comprehend the changes of population and social structure 2) Survey data of floor space index and the building-to-land ratio of new cities at the intial stage for the review of the effect of architectural planning and urban environment 3) Surveys of experts on structural safety in order to judge whether the demand of expansion is accepted or not. 4) Quantitative analysis of each item to compare fairness with reconstruction. Therefore, this study is intended to understand problems of the remodeling system that is currently operated. Moreover, it will be further reviewed that the expansion of households is feasible through the permission of expansion and it will be discussed that the revitalization of the apartment remodeling has a positive impact on the residential environment.

  • Groundwater drawdown was pointed out as one of the causes of induced settlement on high speed railways, especially concrete track. In this study, the effect of groundwater variation on settlement was evaluated through a comparison of field measurements with numerical analysis results. A trial and error method, i.e., repeated numerical analyses by changing material properties, was used to calibrate the model. The model was applied to investigate the effect of groundwater drawdown, thickness of soft layer, and embankment height on residual settlement after concrete track completion. A soft layer thicker than 4m would result in more than 30mm of settlement; a detailed analysis of groundwater behavior thus should be conducted from the design stage to construction.
