Recently, much of attention has been given to the role of values in pro-environmental behaviors. The reasons are that most of environmental pollution comes from the home-living and polluting behavior is motivated by the undesirable value pursuing self-interests. This study is designed to investigate the effect of values on environmental behaviors. The results of this study are as following: Homemakers' value structure had 'self-transcendence·conservation' value, 'self-enhancement·conservation' value and 'openness-to-change' value as value factors. And the homemakers thought of self-transcendence·conservation value as "most important" and self-enhancement·conservation value as "not important". Consequently, homemakers had a tendency to do more pro-environmental behaviors when they perceived self-transcendence·conservation value as "more important value", while they did less when they regarded self-enhancement·conservation value as "more important". Therefor self-transcendence·whereas self-enhancement·conservation value is a negative predictor. Especially, self-transcendence·conservation value had more influence on pro-environmental behaviors than self-enhancement·conservation value.

The traditional temples located in national parks have various functions, such as religious practice, tourist destination, and conservation for cultural and natural resources. One functions have implicit monetary values in terms of public benefits. The purpose of this study was to estimate both use and non-use conservation values for two traditional temples, Sinheungsa and Haeinsa, using the contingent valuation method. In the study, both single-bounded and double-bounded dichotomous choice methods were used in an application of Turnbull distribution-free model. A total of 659 visitors were interviewed, 350 in Sinheungsa and 309 in Haeinsa. The mean WTP (willingness to pay) for Sinheungsa using single-bounded method was 4,040 Won for the use value, 6,157 Won for the cultural conservation value, and 5,624 Won for the natural conservation value. The mean WTP for Haeinsa using single-bounded method was 6,463 Won for the use value, 8,769 Won for the cultural conservation value, and 8,013 Won for the natural conservation value. The total economic value of each temple accounted for 50% (Sinheungsa) and 80% (Haeinsa) of the total economic value of the associated national park. It was also found that the single-bounded method was more conservative than the double-bounded method in terms of value estimation. The WTP was highest for the cultural conservation value and lowest for the use values in both temples, with natural conservation values falling in the middle, which showed that people perceived traditional temples as the cultural heritage. Based on these results, it was suggested that traditional temples should be designated as an 'multiple heritage area' so that conservation can be used as the main criteria for various use programs.
Assessing values in establishing conservation principles has been at the heart of discussions for the last twenty years since conservation has been recognised as a social process to include various kinds of stakeholders for making a rational decision rather than a single scientific activity by a small group of experts. Such perception makes values attributed to cultural heritage important in deciding the reason why, the way how to, and the thing what to conserve making value assessment become crucial theme to understand and developing value-based conservation process. However heritage values, the way of assessing them, and establishing value-based conservation principles have been less studied in Korea. This thesis aims to initiate studies of heritage values and encourage discussion for setting out value-based conservation principles. It has three main chapters: 1. to analytically review previous studies on value assessment to redelineate various kinds of values which can be attributed to Korean cultural heritage; 2. to examine affecting factors in assessing values and significance, which are authenticity and historical and cultural dimension of value assessment; 3. to develop a process to establish value-based conservation principles. This study left several areas to be developed in future studies: 1. deeper understanding of various kinds of values from local perspective taking actual cases; 2. addressing problems in compromising conflicting values and providing solution to conserve all attributed values withing devaluing certain aspects of values; 3. providing guidance for practicing value - based decision - making process and setting out regular training opportunities for heritage - related professionals.
This paper investigates the development of attitudes to historic conservation from the turn of the nineteenth century when certain theoretical opinions on the protection of buildings began to be developed, through the time when the Venice Charter was established, to recent international trends in historic conservation. This paper also explores the contribution of these attitudes and ideas towards an international approach for historic conservation. This paper demonstrates that the Venice Charter is the acme of progress in the European stance towards restoration, reflecting European values of architecture and its conservation, and thus it is not sufficiently 'universal' to be unequivocally applied in non-Western countries. Secondly, recent international trends in historic conservation subvert the notions of Western cultural hegemony which have permeated global conservation practices, and accept the diversity of value criteria for heritage and its conservation in different cultural context. Thirdly, this paper argues that the conservation approaches in Asian societies need to move further into the retention and extension of the spirit and naturalistic sensibilities inherent in the architecture. Historic conservation is an expression of different cultural values attached to heritage resources by different societies. For conservation program to be effective, conservation should take place within a socio-cultural context.
The early post-war modern architecture introduced to Korea in the 60's and 70's have reached its 50 year cycle to emerge as candidates for the registered heritage. However, conservation is a complicated topic when applied to modern architecture due to its social and political status among general public, and is often a sacrificial target for demolition or insensitive alteration. This research tries to identify significant values extracted from the intrinsic characteristics of modern architecture, that can be applied to conducting successful renovation projects on modern architecture. The conservational values of modern architecture to be maintained are identified in this paper as: flexible open space, material and structural system, and extension of interior-exterior relation. These values are examined through the filter of comparative analysis on domestic and international conservation standards, along with cross-examination on recently renovated local works performed on the modern architecture of the period. This research aims to bring focus on conducting respectful conservation and renovation to modern architecture by identifying the significant values that is intrinsic to the modern architecture and is worth preserving.
Heritage resources have become important social assets as the global interests in heritage tourism increased. Utilization of heritage as unique tourist destination has positive effects on regional economy, which in turn plays an important role in heritage conservation. However, it was found that the essential quality of heritage resources has been degraded and even destroyed when excessive use was permitted. This undesirable side-effects of heritage tourism have led to the growing concern for sustainable tourism that can contribute to both utilization and conservation of heritage. In order for sustainable tourism to be effectively implemented, it is crucial for visitors to be aware of the need for heritage conservation because they are the most important consumers of the heritage. The purpose of this study was to suggest some basic information for sustainable tourism by investigating visitors' evaluation of conservation and use values of heritage resources. The study sites were the two Korean traditional temples(Sokrisan Bubjusa and Naejangsan Naejangsa) and contingent valuation method was used. 390 visitors in Bubjusa and 308 visitors in Naejangsa participated in the questionnaire survey. From the results, sustainable tourism is possible in such heritage areas as traditional temples because the participants had relatively balanced values for heritage conservation and use. The WTP for natural conservation value was found to be highest in both temples; visitors may be more agreeable with the heritage conservation plan if the sustainability of natural resource is emphasized. Also, the use value of heritage could be influenced by the tourism utilization of the area where the heritage was located. If there are no other famous tourist destinations except the heritage in the area, additional plans to develop alternative destinations should be prepared in order to formulate the agreement on the need to protect the heritage among visitors, local communities, and government.

Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FTIR-ATR) was applied to chemical analysis for conservation status of 10 human bone remains from Joseon Dynasty. The result of crystallinity index (CI) is $4.25{\pm}0.78$, carbonate to carbonate ratio (C/C) is $0.91{\pm}0.04$ and cabonate content (C/P) is $0.19{\pm}0.06$. The higher histological index (HI) confirmed CI and C/P value was increased and C/C value was reduced. While C/C or C/P values analysis is possible. While DNA analysis can be extracted from the bone, C/C values are lower or C/P values are higher was found to the analysis is possible. Chemical assessment of FTIR and histological index consequence is expected to be applicable as a basis for comprehensive understanding of the conservation status excavated bones.

Local government with abundant natural resources should consider the nature conservation oriented planning process for the sustainable development. With this regard, the aim of this study is to provide a substantial methodology to support the decision-making process to designate the conservation areas. The objectives of the proposed methodology is to conserve natural resources in the local government's territory through quantitatively assessing the values of the natural resources based on various ecological factors such as topography, flora and fauna. In order to test the usability of the method, Gangneung City in Kangwon-Do is selected considering the latest data availability. Based on the assessment process land use of the subjected city could be categorized into 4 levels of conservative area, conservative level 1 area, conservative level 2 area, and conservative level 3 area. Among them, conservative area and conservative level 1 area could be combined as natural resources conservation area and the others could be regarded as buffer and transitional area. Especially conservation area is surrounded by conservation level 2 area. Conclusively, the GIS methods adopted in this could be the efficient illustrative tool to assess the local natural resource values with the central government established nature-environmental information systems.

The modern philosophy of historic conservation focuses on the permanence of the material aspects of monuments as historic evidence of the artistic achievement of the past. However, so strongly are European attitudes to architecture and its conservation embedded in modern conservation, that it has skewed all conservation thinking towards the concept of the European-type monument which emphasizes visual beauty through its material substance. Thus, some basic ideas of modern conservation seem ill-suited to East Asian architecture which is conceived in a different spirit from its European counterpart. The purposes of the paper are to discuss the need for approaches which are different from the modern Western view of conservation for East Asian architectural heritage, and to make suggestions for developing conservation principles more suited to the unique values and aesthetic sense of East Asian culture and architecture. Conservation principles in the East Asian societies are determined in relation to the spiritual and naturalistic sensibilities of East Asian culture and architecture.
This study aimed to re-establish the conservation area reflecting landscape ecological value through scenario program, targeting Odaesan National Park. The basic data were mapped in watershed planning units, which were set considering topographical and ecological values. The framework of Marxan with Zones, using an indexation process, was using the mapped indicators. Each best solution according to the scenarios was assessed through sensitivity analysis, and a final solution was selected among the best solutions, considering criteria including area ratio of conservation area and grouping. Lastly, the final solution was verified in the overlap analysis with recent zonation. As a result, through the framework of Marxan with Zones, the best solution of scenario 1, which was set by the highest conservation criteria was selected as the final solution, and the area ratio of conservation area and grouping was excellent. As for the overlap analysis, the suggested conservation area was improved compared to recent zonation in terms of the area ratio (39.4%), biotope grade I (35.6%) and the distribution points (7 places) of legally protected species.
