  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore the levels of disaster preparedness competency in public health workers and identify influential factors on disaster preparedness competency. Methods: The data was collected through self-report questionnaires from a convenience sample of 281 public health workers in 2014 in Korea. The data was analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, and multiple regression. Results: The mean disaster preparedness competency score was 2.77 and the mean disaster educational needs score was 4.01. Disaster preparedness competency had a statistically significant difference by gender, position, experience of disaster education in workplace, and experience of BLS education. As a result of the multiple regression analysis, disaster preparedness competency accounted for 11.6% of the variance by gender, experience of disaster education in workplace, and experience of BLS education. Conclusion: The results of this study reveal that gender, strengthening education of disasters in the workplace, and education of BLS should be taken into consideration and integrated when developing an effective educational program in order to enhance disaster preparedness competency in public health workers.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine teaching competency for character education of early childhood teachers and their demands to improve their capacities. 152 kindergarten and child care teachers responded to 30 survey questionnaires, which included 3 sub-factors(commutative, practical, instrumental) of teaching competency for character education of the teachers, as well as 16 detailed components, designed to check their current competency for character education and to investigate the priority elements that they desired to improve. The data were analyzed based on the Borich request formula, the locus for focus model, and the independent sample t-test across the teacher groups. The results were as follows: Firstly, the most highly demanded teaching competency by the teachers was using tools interactively for character education. And the teachers, among the sub-elements, requested (a) recording and evaluating character education systematically, (b) using local or national resources, (c) planning member's participation, and (d) performing character education related activities systematically. Secondly, more new teachers demanded instrumental competency and answered the need of parents' participation among the sub-elements, more than the more experienced teachers, respectively. The study discussed the implications of promoting early childhood teachers' teaching competency for character education.

  • This study explores the applicability of social capital theory in IT project management. Specifically, an empirical model is developed using different types of leadership competencies (emotional, cognitive, and social) as independent constructs impacting IT project performance. Social capital shared among team members are measured and placed as a mediating construct between leadership competencies and performance. Using PLS analysis of 120 data points collected through a survey of IT project participants in two large electronic manufacturers, direct and indirect impacts of leadership competencies are explicated. Research results reveal that emotional leadership competency seems to directly influence the project performance but not through team social capital, while social leadership competency seems to indirectly influence the project performance through team social capital but not directly onto the project performance. Cognitive leadership competency is the only leadership competency that maintains direct and indirect influence on project performance. Total effect of cognitive competency on project performance is almost two times larger than the total effect of emotional leadership competency and six times larger than the total effect of social leadership competency. Implications of findings are discussed at the end, and further studies are suggested.

  • This study examined effect of preceptorship on clinical education of 39 senior nursing students. Competency scores and satisfaction with preceptors scores were investigated. Competency scores of the students before the clinical education (pre-competency scores) were compared with the competency scores after the clinical education (post-competency scores), and satisfactory scores were also examined after the clinical education. Study results showed that the total post-competency scores were increased compared to the total pre-competency scores, and this increment was statistically significant. However, analyzing sub-domains of the competency scores indicated only the nursing-skill domain scores were increased while the scores of interpersonal domain and management domain were increased but statistically insignificant. Satisfaction with preceptors scores were also more than the average scores reflecting the students were satisfied with their preceptors generally. The students, However, grade low in the preceptors' intellectual ability while their professional and interpersonal ability were rather satisfied. This study indicated preceptors should make more efforts to teach interpersonal and management skill and increase their intellectual ability. This study recommended a systematic reward system for the preceptors to increase the motivation to teach students is needed.

Result: The mean score of career identity was 31.90 points and clinical competency was 145.13. Career identity showed a significant difference in the age, satisfaction of college entrance and satisfaction of clinical practice. Clinical competency showed a significant difference in the sex, marriage, satisfaction of college entrance and satisfaction of clinical practice. The data showed a negative correlation between career identity and clinical competency. • Purpose: This study was conducted to explore how clinical practice stress and moral sensitivity affect the clinical competency of nursing students. Methods: Participants had completed at least a one year (2 semesters) clinical nursing practicum through K University in D Metropolitan City. A total of 188 nursing students were recruited: third grade (n=104) and fourth grade (n=84). The questionnaires were adopted with clinical practice stress, Korean version of moral sensitivity questionnaire (K-MSQ), and the clinical competency. Results: Clinical competency was positively correlated with patient-oriented care (r=.27, p<.001) and the professional responsibility (r=.32, p<.001) of the moral sensitivity (r=.27, p<.001). The attitude of medical personnel experiencing clinical practice stress shows a significant positive relationship with clinical competency (r=.15, p=.038). The attitude of medical personnel (β=.09, p=.194) experiencing clinical practice stress, patient-oriented care (β=.16, p=.041) and professional responsibility (β=.23, p=.003) of the moral sensitivity explained 12% of the variance in clinical competency (F=9.17, p<.001). Therefore, the influential factors on clinical competency were two sub-factors of moral sensitivity. Conclusion: Moral educational programs should be considered to develop a nursing students' clinical competency.

  • The purpose of this study was to develop instruments for measuring paternal child rearing involvement. A second purpose was to investigate the relationship between social competency of child and the father's involvement in child rearing. Fathers' child rearing involvement inventories were administered to 513 5th and 6th grade school students to evaluate children's perceived father's rearing involvement. Assessment of the child's social competency by the mother was by the modified Iowa Social Competency Scale. Data were analyzed by factor analysis, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and canonical correlation. The main results were as follows: (1) There were differences in mean scores between variables on father's child rearing involvement. The mean score of 'day-to-day guidance' was higher than such father's involvement variables as 'family activities', 'household affairs', 'home education'. (2) There was a significant correlation between the social competency of children and father's child rearing involvement. In other words, fathers' child rearing involvement showed significant correlations with 'the capability' and 'leadership' of children. (3) The canonical analysis in two variables-the fathers' child rearing involvement (independent variables) and the children's social competency (dependent variables)-showed that the child variables most highly correlated to the independent variables were 'capability' and 'affection toward parents'. This also indicated that the father variables accounted for about 9.4% of the variation in social competency. In conclusion, the father's child rearing involvement can he recognized as significant variable in predicting the social competency of children.
