  • This study was undertaken as a useful material not only to understand the clothing behaviors and the personal variables (age, education, occupation, yearly clothing expenses, weight, and persons who influence on one's choice of clothes) of the middle-aged women in Seoul, Korea but to lend itself to other uses concerning attitudes toward clothing. For the measurement of the attitudes toward specified activities related to clothing use, attitude method by Mary F. Pasnak (1968) was reworded and modified for use with the sample for this study. Analysis of the data revealed that the clothing behaviors of 450 women 30 to 59 years of age made a significant difference according to the personal variables. First, women in thirties showed the most positive clothing attitude of the three age groups. The younger age groups were positively related to relief from boredom through clothing, intensity, sureness, and involvement of attitude among eight attitudes related to clothing. Second, the positiveness of relief from boredom through clothing, intensity, sureness, and involvement of attitude increased in proportion to the education level. On the other hand, dressing for self was negatively related to the level of education. Third, a significant relationship was found between the amount of the clothing expenses and dressing for others, tactual pleasure through clothing, intensity, sureness, and involvement of attitude. Among the personal variables of the middle-aged women, age, the educational level, and the clothing expenses have a relationship with the clothing behaviors, while job, weight, and the persons who influence on one's choice of clothes have no relationship. The extensive interpretation on the result of this study will have to be taken with deliberation. For the more practical material researches on the clothing behaviors of the middle-aged women should be continued steadily in every possible way.

  • Technologies such as television shopping channels and the internet expand consumers' impulse purchasing opportunities. The interest in national differences of consumer behavior was growing and highlighted the importance of understanding the national context of consumer behavior in an increasing globalized marketplace. The purposes of this study were to examine the effects of fashion involvement and hedonic consumption on impulse buying for Korean and American young consumers, and to compare the differences between two groups. A questionnaire was developed from literatures reviewed. Data were obtained from students attending universities in Korea(N=413) and the U.S.(N=290). Using structural equation modeling, the results indicated that the proposed model of this study was appropriate to explain the effects of fashion involvement and hedonic consumption on impulse buying for Korean and American young consumers. The model showed that fashion involvement and hedonic consumption played important roles in triggering impulse buying for two groups. In addition, American consumers were more likely to influence fashion involvement and hedonic consumption on impulse buying than Korean consumers. The results provided some insights into globalized retail marketing theory supporting the national aspects of impulse buying. Future research and managerial implications are addressed.

College students from Seoul and Beijing participated in the study and a quota sampling method collected the data. Data from 504 questionnaires is used for the statistical analysis. A factor analysis through, Cronbach's alpha coefficient, ANOVA, and a post-hoc test are conducted. Two factors of apparel shopping values are classified (hedonic shopping values and utilitarian shopping values). Four segments of apparel shopping value were classified (hedonic shopping, low involvement shopping segment, high involvement shopping, and utilitarian shopping). Three factors of apparel attribute are classified (external attributes, internal/aesthetic attributes, and internal/quality attributes). The result indicate that high involvement shopping segments considered all the clothing attributes more importantly than the other three segments. Chinese respondents of hedonic shopping segments and high involvement shopping segments considered advertisements in terms of external attributes, assembly, and fit in terms of internal/quality performance attributes as more important than Koreans. Chinese respondents of low involvement shopping segments also considered assembly and fit in terms of internal/quality performance attributes as more important than Koreans.
