  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of patient and doctor role-play on participatory clinical clerkship by surveying student's satisfaction and assessing the improvement of skill and consultation ability after conducting a role-play in a Korean dermatology department. Methods: In 2013, 79 seniors participated in the clinical clerkship of the dermatology department at the college of Korean medicine. Two students were randomly selected and paired up. After a brief instruction, one student played the role of doctor and the other took the role of patient. After finishing the $1^{st}$ role-play, they swapped roles and conducted a $2^{nd}$ role-play, using another clinical case. When the two role-plays were completed, the students filled in a questionnaire about their satisfaction with the role-play as clinical clerkship. Also, we compared the scores of the $1^{st}$ role-play with those of the $2^{nd}$ role-play measured by a medical resident to assess improvements of students' skill and interview ability. Results: It appears that students' satisfaction with the role-play was quite high, considering that the overall mean score of the questionnaire was 4.30. According to the result of a t-test on 15 assessment questions, the $2^{nd}$ role-play had a higher mean score than the $1^{st}$ role-play in 12 questions, though this difference was not statistically significant. Conclusions: These results demonstrate that role-play is helpful to improve students' satisfaction and clinical performance ability in clinical clerkship. Further research and continuous development are necessary for better clinical clerkship.

  • This study attempts to measure the critical thinking disposition and problem-solving ability levels of dental hygiene students and to investigate their correlation. A self-administered survey was conducted with respect to dental hygiene students from three-year colleges in Busan, Ulsan and the Gyeongsangbuk-do region between April 2013 and May 2013. A total of 649 surveys were subject to a final analysis. Critical thinking disposition of the dental hygiene students resulted in a score of 3.20 out of a total of 5.0. Freshmen, students with high academic performance results, students with good interpersonal relations, students with a high level of satisfaction regarding major subject and clinical training and students with no clinical training experience showed a high score for critical thinking disposition. Problem-solving ability of the dental hygiene students resulted in a score of 3.06 out of a total of 5.0. Students with high academic performance results, students with good interpersonal relations and students with a high level of satisfaction regarding major subject and clinical training showed a high score for problem-solving ability. It was found that critical thinking disposition and problem-solving ability had a pure correlation. The critical thinking disposition appeared to problem solving, interpersonal relations, major factors affect satisfaction, was a critical thinking disposition, academic factors affect the ability to problem solve. Regarding education for dental hygiene students, the reinforcement of training to increase critical thinking and problem-solving abilities is necessary and the development of an educational curriculum and change in educational environment that can increase interpersonal skills and communication skills is necessary.

  • Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of a nursing education program for hyperglycemia patient care using standardized patients. Methods: This study used a nonequivalent control group pre-test and post-test non-synchronized design. A total of 50 senior university nursing students who had completed an adult nursing course participated in this study (experimental group, n=24; control group, n=26). This nursing education program was developed according to the stages of analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. The collected data were analyzed using χ2 -test, Fisher's exact test, independent t-test, paired t-test, and repeated measure ANOVA. Results: Significant differences were shown between the experimental and control groups in clinical performance ability (F=277.41, p<.001), communication skills (F=47.18, p<.001), self-efficacy (F=3.81, p=.031), and learning satisfaction (t=2.25, p=.033). Problem-solving ability was not statistically significant between the groups. Conclusion: The nursing education program for hyperglycemia patient care using standardized patients was effective in improving nursing students' clinical performance ability, communication skills, and learning satisfaction. Therefore, it is proposed that the education program developed in this study be used as part of an education program to enhance nursing students' abilities in caring for hyperglycemia patients.

  • Background: This study was to survey the effect of the degree of spiritual nursing care performance on the spiritual nursing care ability of the nursing students Methods: The researcher sampled 130 nursing students for a questionnaire survey conducted from September 17 until September 27, 2018. The data of analysis used SPSS 23.0 program. Results: The spiritual nursing care ability was $4.4{\pm}0.8$(total score 6) and the degree of spiritual nursing care performance was $2.9{\pm}1.8$(total score 4). The spiritual nursing care ability differed significantly depending on religion(F=7.570, p<.001), the level of spiritual nursing knowledge(F=19.873, p<.001), education type(F=14.626, p<.001), necessity of hospice(t=2.280, p=.024). The degree of spiritual nursing care performance differed significantly depending on spiritual nursing education time(F=2.932, p=.036). The correlation of two variable was statistically significant difference(r=.206, p=.019). The influencing factors on the spiritual nursing care ability was religion, the level of spiritual nursing knowledge, education type, dying experience($R^2=0.378$, Adj $R^2=0.353$), the degree of spiritual nursing care performance was spiritual nursing education time($R^2=0.065$, Adj $R^2=0.043$). Conclusion: These results show that nursing students are not able to perform spiritual nursing care properly to subjects who need spiritual nursing care. Therefore, it is necessary to develope programs to meet the spiritual nursing care needs of nursing students and to provide practical education in accordance with the program by cooperating with the nursing education staff, clergy and clinical nurse etc. And spiritual nursing care should be taught as a required subjects in the curriculum.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of critical thinking, clinical decision making ability, patient safety knowledge and attitude ability to perform patient safety activities during clinical practice on nursing student's. Data were analyzed using t-tests and one-way ANOVA using the SPSS 21.0 program. As a result, the subjects' safety nursing activities was positively correlated critical thinking disposition(r=.278, p=.001), clinical decision making ability(r=.202, p=.014), patient safety attitude(r=.421, p<.001).The significant predictors of perform safety nursing activities were gender(${\beta}=.175$, p=.031), patient safety education(${\beta}=-2.266$, p=.025), critical thinking disposition(${\beta}=3.354$, p=.001), patient safety attitude(${\beta}=.368$, p<.001). These factors explained 31.5% of the variance(R2=.561, F=4.56 p<.001). It is necessary to establish a curriculum for critical thinking disposition, clinical decision making ability, and patient safety education in order to improve patient safety performance necessary for clinical practice education of nursing college students.

The pediatric nursing competency-building program integrated problem-based learning and simulation into clinical field practice. The experimental group participated in the program, while the control group did not. Data were analyzed using the 𝑥2 test, the independent t-test, and repeated-measures analysis of variance. Results: Pediatric nursing competency and clinical performance showed a greater increase in the experimental group than in the control group. However, the change in problem-solving ability in the experimental group was not significantly different from that in the control group. Conclusion: The pediatric nursing competency-building program effectively improved students' pediatric nursing competency and clinical performance.
