The major purpose of this study was to explore the relation of a child's need for approval, anxiety and anger-in on a child's relational aggression according to gender. The study's participants included 464 boys and girls selected from fifth-and sixth-graders at an elementary school in Busan. A child's need for approval, anxiety, anger-in and relational aggression were assessed with their own self-reports. For data analysis, Cronbach ${\alpha}$, T-test, Pearson correlation coefficients, and Multiple Regression were used. The collected data was analyzed by the SPSSWIN 18.0 program. The major findings were as follows: First, child's anger-in demonstrated a significant difference among sexes. Girls indicated higher points than boys. Second, Boys' need for approval indirectly affected child's relational aggression through anger-in. Boys' anger-in was directly affected by relational aggression. Boys' anxiety was directly affected by anger-in. And boys' anxiety indirectly affected child's relational aggression through anger-in. Third, Girls' anxiety was directly affected by relational aggression. Need for approval and anxiety were directly affected by anger-in. The findings from this study indicates that child's need for approval, anxiety and anger-in are important elements in relational aggression are affected differently depending on the child's gender. Also, this study has meaning in that it can be used as fundamental data to develop a teaching plan and counseling program for children that can decrease relational aggression.

In this investigation of child's psychological wellbeing and parental satisfaction with dual income family(DIF), subjects were 297 3rd and 5th grade elementary school students and their mothers. Results showed that boys and younger children were more satisfied with mother's working than girls and older children. Mothers' DIF satisfaction was dependent on gross family income, parents' occupations, working conditions of each parent, commuter marriage status, and length of time in DIF. Child's psychological wellbeing related positively to mother's parental satisfaction, and to mother's satisfaction with parental roles, parent-child relationships, spouse support and child support. Only sub factors of dilemmas in parental role related negatively to DIF status. Child's satisfaction with mother's roles, father's roles, and mother working influenced mother's parental role satisfaction.

The purpose of this study was to examine the current interior conditions of Child Care Center and to suggest the interior planning guidelines of Child Care Center. Data were collected through questionnaire survey including observations and interviews. The sample consisted of 84 Child Care Centers. The data were analyzed by using SPSS-PC. The major findings were as follows: (1) Most of Child Care Centers are not in the desirable Interior environment. To enhance the quality of Child Care Center, the physical interior environment of Child Care Center should be influence on the development of child. (2) Functional spaces should be organized to support the child' behavior. Multi-purposed room should be provide to encourage and adapt to variety of large-muscle activities. (3) The design of Child Care Center should be emphasized to satisfy teachers and children who are directed users. (4) Interior finishings looks too monotonous and do not have characteristics. Natural materials, various colors and patterns are recommendable. Furniture should be designed to meet the functions of flexibility, mobility, and security.

This paper demonstrated how application of evolutionary knowledge to developmental perspectives enhances understanding of human ontogeny. Evolutionary Developmental Psychology (EDP) explains human behavior through evolutionary principles and focuses on ontogeny rather than phylogeny. In this paper, the authors review concepts of evolution, adaptations, and the processes of evolution from EDP perspectives. The definition and basic assumptions of EDP are introduced, followed by explanations of how evolution happens in ontogeny by looking at developmental systems approaches, concepts of ontogenetic and deferred adaptations, evolution of childhood, and brain plasticity. Possible pathways of evolution in ontogeny are also discussed. Finally, some research methodology for applying EDP to child development is suggested with specific hypotheses and studies.

Korean society has been facing many challenges and promises resulting from the rapid population shifts into multi-cultural and multi-ethnic family composition. Government strived to respond to the impending demands and needs of Korean cultural families, in terms of marriage and birth, caring and educating children, and labor and work. This paper overviews the current state of Korean multicultural trends and facts in terms of family, marriage, children, and work. It also overarches major issues of multicultural studies of family relations and child development. By wrapping the facts and issues in current discourse and studies, pragmatic policy points were provided and condensed into some suggestions for the policy-making and program implementation.

Sweden has one of the world's most progressive and comprehensive childcare systems; synonymous with quality, it is the envy of many other countries. The purpose of this study was to investigate background factors important to the development of the Swedish childcare system and the current childcare policy and system. This study found that underpinning the Swedish childcare system is not only the expectation that men and women will participate equally in the workforce, child rearing, and domestic life but also an awareness of the right of children to development and education. Implementation of the Swedish childcare policy has provided for easy access and affordable childcare centers following principles of childcare universalism. This provides practical suggestions for the Korean childcare policy and system.

This study investigated the effect on children's literacy of teacher-child discussion about the contents of storybooks. The subjects were 10 experimental and 10 control 5-year-old kindergarten children in Cheongju. The experimental design was the Split Plot design. The research instruments used for pre- and post-tests were the Vocabulary Decoding Competence Test(Lee, 1998), Writing Competence Test(Lee & Lee, 1990), Story Comprehension Competence Test(Lee, 1998; Morrow, 1990), and the Emergent Reading Ability Judgements for Favorite Storybooks(Sulzby, 1985). Data were analyzed by ANOVA with repeated measures. Results showed that the teacher-child discussions about the contents of storybooks were effective for improving children's competence in decoding vocabulary, writing, and story comprehension but not for improving emergent reading ability.

This study examined the influence of mothers' reading and scaffolding behaviors on children's emotional experiences and memory recall during picture book reading. Sixty children, aged 6 and their mothers participated in this study. Each child-mother dyad was observed in a lab setting which was designed to evaluate child-mother interactions during a picture book reading. The data were analyzed using correlation and multiple regression techniques. Our results indicated that mothers' task-oriented reading behavior affected the children's lack of positive emotions, whereas mothers' fun-oriented reading behavior was associated with the children's positive emotions. The task-oriented reading behavior also accounted for children's poor memory performance in relation to the book. These results were discussed in terms of the relationship between emotion and cognition through book reading experiences.

The purpose of this research was to analyze the trajectory of child's academic attainment and the effect of family socioeconomic background on the trajectory. Data were part of the Korea Youth Panel Survey 2003-2005(Middle School 2) and were analyzed by Latent Growth Curve Modeling(LGM). The degree of child's academic attainment decreased over 3 years. Socioeconomic status variables that influenced academic trajectory were family poverty, parent's attainments in scholarship, and family structure. Findings from this study suggest that societal support for low socioeconomic status families is needed for improvement of academic attainment of their children.

The purposes of this study were to examine the correlations of children's competencies perceived by fathers and mothers, and to investigate differences of children's competencies in relations to characters of the children and that of the parents. The subjects were 225 pairs of father-mother of 7 and of 12 year old children in Daejon. The major findings were as follows. (1) Children's competencies perceived by fathers and mothers were positively correlated with each other. (2) The gender of child affected much on father-perceived esthetic and musical competencies, and on mother-perceived responsible, intellectual, esthetic, and musical competencies. Child's age also had a great effect on father- and mother-perceived esthetic competencies of child. (3) There were no significant differences in children's competencies in relations to characters of parents except in father-perceived responsible competence by fathers' age and in intellectual competencies by income, and in mother-perceived social competences by mothers' job.
