  • Hybrid-type magnetic bearings using both permanent magnets and electromagnets have been used for rotating machinery. In the case of conventional thrust hybrid magnetic bearings supporting axial loads, radially magnetized permanent ring magnets, which have several demerits such as difficult magnetization and assembly, have been used to generate bias flux. In this study, a novel thrust hybrid magnetic bearing using an axially magnetized permanent ring magnet is presented. Because it is easy to magnetize a ring magnet in the axial direction, the segmentation of the ring magnet for magnetization is not required and the assembly process can be simplified. For verifying the performance of the proposed method, a test rig that consists of a proposed thrust magnetic bearing and variable loads is constructed. This paper presents the detailed design procedures and the obtained experimental results. The results show that the developed thrust magnetic bearing has the potential to replace conventional thrust magnetic bearings.

  • In this paper, we investigated the frequency dependences of AC loss and the magnetic properties of a superconductor using magnetization method. We used the YBCO bulk superconductor sample which has a square-shaped cross sectional area of $6mm{\times}6mm$. and 43mm-long in axial direction. The applied AC magnetic field was parallel to the direction of sample axis. It is observed that YBCO bulk has the diamagnetic properties. AC loss calculation of YBCO bulk superconductor was performed by evaluating the total area of magnetization traces. We performed two cases of experiments, one for $B_m<B_p$ and the other for $B_m<B_p$. The experiments showed that the AC loss dependences on frequency were different in each mode, as was indicated in other publications.

  • Herein, the closed-form expressions of the magnetic field due to an axially symmetric body such as a right cylinder, are derived. The magnetic field due to a right cylinder is converted from the gravity gradient tensor using Poisson's relation; the magnetic field induced by a constant magnetization can be obtained from the gravity gradient tensor with a constant density. Because of the axial symmetry of the cylinder, the expressions of gravity gradient tensor are derived in cylindrical coordinate and then transformed into Cartesian coordinates for the three components of the magnetic field using an arbitrary magnetization direction.

  • Disk type Single Phase SRM(Switched Reluctance Motor) can be used axial and radial direction magnetic flux. Therefore, the energy density per unit of volume is high and the axis can be shorter than that of any other motor. In this paper, the flux-linkage was measured according as rotor positions of disk type single phase SRM, which is designed and fabricated in previous studies. From the measured data, we got the magnetization curves, inductance profile, co-energy and torque. Also, we compared the value of the measurement with the value of analysis through 3D FEM simulation.

  • In this research, we used the ion irradiation technique which has an advantae in improving intentionally the properties of surface and interface in a non-equilibrium, instead of the conventional annealing method which has been known to improve the material properties in the equilibrium stat. Cu/Co multilayered films were prepared on SiN4/SiO2/Si substrates by the electron-beam evaporation for the Co layers and the thermal evaporation for the Cu layers in a high vacuum. The ion irradiation with a 80keV Ar+ was carried out at various ion doses in a high vacuum. Hysteresis loops of the films were investigated by magneto-optical polar Kerr spectroscopy at various experimental conditions. The change of atomic structure of the films before and after the ion irradiation was studied by glancing angle x-ray diffraction, and the intermixing between Co and Cu sublayers was confirmed by Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy. The surface roughness and magneto-resistance were measured by atomic force microscopy and with a four-point probe system, respectively. During the magneto-resistance measurement, we changed temperature and the direction of magnetization. From the results of experiments, we found that the change at the interfaces of the Cu/Co multilayered film induced by ion irradiation cause the change of magnetic properties. According to the change in hysteresis loop, the surface inplane component of magnetic easy axis was isotropic before the ion irradiation, but became anisotropic upon irradiation. It was confirmed that this change influences the axial behavior of magneto-resistance. Especially, the magneto-resistance varied in accordance with an external magnetic field and the direction of current, which means that magneto-resistance also shows the uniaxial behavior.

  • In this study, the expressions of magnetic vector and magnetic gradient tensor due to an elliptical cylinder were derived. Igneous intrusions and kimberlite structures are often shaped like elliptical cylinders with axial symmetry and different radii in the strike and perpendicular directions. The expressions of magnetic fields due to this elliptical cylinder were derived from the Poisson relation, which includes the direction of magnetization in the gravity gradient tensor. The magnetic gradient tensor due to an elliptical cylinder is derived by differentiating the magnetic fields. This method involves obtaining a total of 10 triple derivative functions acquired by differentiating the gravitational potential of the elliptical cylinder three times in each axis direction. As the order of differentiation and integration can be exchanged, the magnetic gradient tensor was derived by differentiating the gravitational potential of the elliptical cylinder three times in each direction, followed by integration in the depth direction. The remaining double integration was converted to a complex line integral along the closed boundary curve of the elliptical cylinder in the complex plane. The expressions of the magnetic field and magnetic gradient tensor derived from the complex line integral in the complex plane were shown to be perfectly consistent with those of the circular cylinder derived by the Lipschitz-Hankel integral.

  • In this study, expressions for the magnetic field and magnetic gradient tensor due to an elliptical disk were derived. Igneous intrusions and kimberlite structures often have elliptical cylinders with axial symmetry and elliptical cross sections. An elliptical cylinder with varying cross-sectional areas was approximated using stacks of elliptical disks. The magnetic fields of elliptical disks were derived using the Poisson relation, which includes the direction of magnetization in the gravity gradient tensor, as described in a previous study (Rim, 2024). The magnetic gradient tensor due to an elliptical disk is derived by differentiating the magnetic fields, which is equivalent to obtaining ten triple-derivative functions acquired by differentiating the gravitational potential of the elliptical disk three times in each axis direction. Because it is possible to exchange the order of differentiation, the magnetic gradient tensor is derived by differentiating the gravitational potential of the elliptical disk three times, which is then converted into a complex line integral along the closed boundary curve of the elliptical disk in the complex plane. The expressions for the magnetic field and magnetic gradient tensor derived from a complex line integral in complex plane are perfectly consistent with those of the circular disk derived from the Lipschitz-Hankel integral.
