  • The non-dimensional fin length for optimum heat loss from a thermally asymmetric rectangular fin is represented as a function of the ratio of the bottom surface Biot number to the top surface Biot number, fin tip surface Biot number and the non-dimensional fin width. Optimum heat loss is taken as 98% of the maximum heat loss. For this analysis, three dimensional separation of variables method is used. Also, the relation between the ratio of the bottom surface Biot number to the top surface Biot number and the ratio of the right surface Biot number to the left surface Biot number is presented.

  • The non-dimensional heat loss from a thermally asymmetric triangular fin is investigated as a function of a ratio of upper and lower surface Biot numbers (Bi2/Bi1), the non-dimensional fin length and tip surface Biot number using the two-dimensional separation of variables method. The effect of fin tip surface Biot number on the variation of the non-dimensional temperature along the sloped upper and lower surfaces for the thermally asymmetric condition is presented. The relationship between the non-dimensional fin length and the fin tip surface Biot number for equal amount of heat loss is also discussed as well as the relationship between upper surface Biot number and tip surface Biot number for equal amount of heat loss.

  • The purpose of this comparative study was to investigate the properties of chromium nitride coatings deposited by asymmetric bipolar pulsed DC sputtering and DC sputtering system. Oscilloscope traces of the I-V waveforms indicate high power and high current density outputs during the asymmetric bipolar pulsed mode. The grain size decreases with decreasing duty cycle. The duty cycle has a strong influence not only on the microstructural properties but also on the mechanical properties of chromium nitride coatings. Comparing with the continuous DC sputtering, the chromium nitride coatings prepared by pulsed DC asymmetric bipolar process also exhibit better surface roughness.

  • Sea surface wind is an important variable for elucidating the atmospheric-ocean interactions and predicting the dangerous weather conditions caused by oceans. Accurate sea surface wind data are required for making correct predictions; however, there are limited observational datasets for oceans. Therefore, this study aimed to obtain long-period high-resolution sea surface wind data. First, the ERA5 reanalysis wind field, which can be used for a long period at a high resolution, was regridded and synthesized using the asymmetric typhoon wind field calculated via the Generalized Asymmetric Holland Model of the numerical model named ADvanced CIRCulation model. The accuracy of the asymmetric typhoon synthesized wind field was evaluated using data obtained from Korea Meteorological Administration and Japan Meteorological Administration. As a result of the evaluation, it was found that the asymmetric typhoon synthetic wind field reproduce observations relatively well, compared with ERA5 reanalysis wind field and symmetric typhoon synthetic wind field calculated by the Holland model. The sea surface wind data produced in this study are expected to be useful for obtaining storm surge data and conducting frequency analysis of storm surges and sea surface winds in the future.

  • Nanocrystalline vanadium nitride (VN) coatings were deposited using asymmetric bipolar pulsed dc sputtering to further understand the influence of the pulsed plasmas on the crystal structure, microstructure and mechanical properties. Properties of VN coatings were investigated with FE-SEM, XRD and nanoindentation. The results show that, with the increasing pulse frequency and decreasing duty cycle, the coating morphology changed from a porous columnar to a dense structure, with finer grains. Asymmetric bipolar pulsed dc sputtered VN coatings showed higher hardness, elastic modulus and residual compressive stress than dc sputtered VN coatings. The results suggest that asymmetric bipolar pulsed dc sputtering technique is very beneficial for the reactive sputtering deposition of VN coatings.

Oscilloscope traces of the I-V waveforms indicate high power and high current density outputs during the asymmetric bipolar pulsed mode. The grain size decreases with decreasing duty cycle. The duty cycle has a strong influence not only on the microstructural properties but also on the mechanical properties of titanium nitride films. • The non-dimensional convective heat losses from each surface are investigated as a function of the non-dimensional fin length, width and the ratio of upper surface Biot number to bottom surface Biot number (Bi2/Bi1) using the three-dimensional separation of variables method. Heat loss ratio in view of each surface with the variation of Bi2/Bi1 is presented. The variation of the non-dimensioal temperare profile along the fin center line for a thermally asymmetric conditions is also presented.

  • Fin effectiveness and efficiency of a thermally asymmetric rectangular fin are represented as a function of non-dimensional fin length, width, fip tip surface Biot number and the ratio of fin bottom surface Biot number to top surface Biot number. For this analysis, three dimensional separation of variables method is used. One of the results shows that fin effectiveness can be increased or decreased depending on the fin length as the fin tip surface Biot number increases while fin efficiency decreases without depending on that as the fin tip surface Biot number increases.

  • Heat loss and fin efficiency of symmetric and asymmetric trapezoidal fins with variable slope of fin's top surface are obtained by using a two-dimensional analytic method. Shapes of symmetric and asymmetric fins are changed from rectangular through trapezoidal to triangular by adjusting the fin shape factor. The ratio of symmetric trapezoidal fin length to asymmetric trapezoidal fin length is presented as a function of fin base height and convection characteristic number. The ratio of symmetric trapezoidal fin efficiency to asymmetric trapezoidal fin efficiency is presented as a function of the fin base height and fin shape factor. One of results shows that asymmetric trapezoidal fin length is shorter than symmetric trapezoidal fin length (i.e., asymmetric trapezoidal fin volume is smaller than symmetric trapezoidal fin volume) for the same heat loss when the fin base height and fin shape factor are the same.

  • In Fe-3%Si steel, the hot rolling process affects not only the hot rolling texture but also the primary recrystallization texture. Here, the effect of asymmetric hot rolling was studied by comparing the difference in the texture evolved between asymmetric and symmetric hot rolling. The effect of asymmetric hot rolling on the texture of primary recrystallized Fe-3%Si steel was also studied. The symmetric hot rolling of Fe-3%Si steel produces a rotated cube texture at the center but Goss and copper textures near the surface. Asymmetric hot rolling tends to produce Goss and copper textures even at the center like the texture near the surface. After primary recrystallization, the dominant texture at the center changes from {001} <210> to {111} <112> and the new texture has a higher fraction of the grains which make the low energy boundary with Goss grains than that of symmetric hot rolling.
