  • In this paper, we develop discontinuous Galerkin methods with penalty terms, namaly symmetric interior penalty Galerkin methods to solve nonlinear parabolic equations. By introducing an appropriate projection of u onto finite element spaces, we prove the optimal convergence of the fully discrete discontinuous Galerkin approximations in ${\ell}^2(L^2)$ normed space.

  • In this paper, we study the saddlepoint approximations for the ratio of two independent sequences of random variables. In Section 2, we review the saddlepoint approximation to the probability density function. In section 3, we derive an saddlepoint approximation formular for the tail probability by following Daniels'(1987) method. In Section 4, we represent a numerical example which shows that the errors are small even for small sample size.

  • In this paper, the robustness of the artificial neural networks to noise is demonstrated with a multilayer perceptron, and the reason of robustness is due to the statistical orthogonality among hidden nodes and its hierarchical information extraction capability. Also, the misclassification probability of a well-trained multilayer perceptron is derived without any linear approximations when the inputs are contaminated with random noises. The misclassification probability for a noisy pattern is shown to be a function of the input pattern, noise variances, the weight matrices, and the nonlinear transformations. The result is verified with a handwritten digit recognition problem, which shows better result than that using linear approximations.

  • A Chi-square approximation to the distribution of product of independent Beta variates denoted by U is developed. The distribution is commonly used as a test criterion for the general linear hypothesis about the multivariate linear models. The approximation is obtained by fitting a logarithmic function of U to a Chi-square variate in terms of the first three moments. It is compared with the well known approximations due to Box(1949), Rao(1948), and Mudholkar and Trivedi(1980). It is found that the Chi-square approximation compares favorably with the other three approximations.

  • In this work, two numerical schemes arc proposed for solving a general form of Cauchy problem. Here, the problem, to be defined, consists of a system of Volterra integro-differential equations. Picard's and Seiddl'a methods of successive approximations are ued to obtain the approximate solution. The convergence of these approximations is established and the rate of convergence is estimated in every case.

  • The purpose of this paper is to study the iterative approximations of fixed points for asymptotically pseudo-contractive mappings and asymptotically nonexpansive mappings in Banach spaces. The results presented in this paper extend and improve the main results in Geobel-Kirk [4], Liu [5] and Schu [7].

  • Since upper and lower approximations could be induced from the rough set structures, rough sets are considered as approximations. The concept of fuzzy rough sets was proposed by replacing crisp binary relations with fuzzy relations by Dubois and Prade. In this paper, we introduce and investigate some properties of intuitionistic fuzzy rough approximation operators and intuitionistic fuzzy relations by means of topology.

  • In this paper, we shall consider some properties of the metric projection as a set valued mapping. For a set G in a metric space E, the mapping 𝜋G; x → 𝜋G(x) of E into 2G is called set valued metric projection of E onto G. We investigated the properties related to the projection PS(·)(·) and 𝜋S(·)(·) as one-sided best simultaneous approximations.
