Performances of VSI Multivariate Control Charts with Accumulate-Combine Approach

  • Performances of variable sampling interval(VSI) multivariate control charts with accumulate-combine approach for monitoring mean vector of p related quality variables were investigated. Shewhart control chart is also proposed to compare the performances of CUSUM and EWMA charts. Numerical comparisons show that performances of CUSUM and EWMA charts are more efficient than Shewhart chart for small or moderate shifts, and VSI chart is more efficient than fixed sampling interval(FSI) chart. We also found that performances of the CUSUM or EWMA chart with accumulate-combine approach are substantially efficient than those of Shewhart chart.

  • Exponentially Weighted Moving Average(EWMA) control chart for variance-covariance matrix of several quality characteristics based on accumulate-combine approach has proposed. Numerical computations show that multivariate EWMA chart based on accumulate-combine approach is more efficient than corresponding multivariate EWMA chart based on combine-accumulate approach.

  • Multivariate control charts for monitoring mean vector of several related quality variables with combine-accumulate approach and accumulate-combine apprach were investigated. Shewhart chart is also proposed to compare the performances of CUSUM and EWMA charts.   • Borror et al. discussed the EWMA(Exponentially Weighted Moving Average) chart to monitor the count of defects which follows the Poisson distribution, referred to the $EWMA_c$ chart, as an alternative Shewhart c chart. In the $EWMA_c$ chart, the Markov chain approach is used to calculate the ARL (Average Run Length). On the other hand, in order to monitor the process fraction defectives P in high-yield processes, Xie et al. presented the CCC(Cumulative Count of Conforming)-r chart of which quality characteristic is the cumulative count of conforming item inspected until observing $r({\geq}2)$ nonconforming items. Furthermore, Ohta and Kusukawa presented the $CS(Confirmation Sample)_{CCC-r}$ chart as an alternative of the CCC-r chart. As a more superior chart in high-yield processes, in this paper we present an $EWMA_{CCC-r}$ chart to detect more sensitively small or moderate shifts in P than the $CS_{CCC-r}$ chart. The proposed $EWMA_{CCC-r}$ chart can be constructed by applying the designing method of the $EWMA_C$ chart to the CCC-r chart. ANOS(Average Number of Observations to Signal) of the proposed chart is compared with that of the $CS_{CCC-r}$ chart through computer simulation. It is demonstrated from numerical examples that the performance of proposed chart is more superior to the $CS_{CCC-r}$ chart.

  • Purpose: Since traditional p chart is unable to deal with the variation of attribute data, this paper proposes a new attribute control chart for nonconforming proportions incorporating overdispersion with a beta-binomial model. Methods: Statistical theories for control chart developed under the beta-binomial model and a new approach using this control chart are presented Results: False alarm probabilities of p chart with the beta-binomial model are evaluated and demerits of p chart under overdispersion are discussed from three examples. Hence a concrete procedure for the proposed control chart is provided and illustrated with examples Conclusion: The proposed chart is more useful than traditional p chart, individual chart to treat observed proportions nonconforming as variable data and Laney p' chart.

Multivariate EWMA Charts for Simultaneously Monitoring both Means and Variances

  • Multivariate control statistics to simultaneously monitor both means and variances for several quality variables under multivariate normal process are proposed. Performances of the proposed multivariate charts are evaluated in terms of average run length(ARL). Multivariate Shewhart chart is also proposed to compare the performances of multivariate exponentially weighted moving average(EWMA) charts. A numerical comparison shows that multivariate EWMA charts are more efficient than multivariate Shewhart chart for small and moderate shifts and multivariate EWMA scheme based on accumulate-combine approach is more efficient than corresponding multivariate EWMA chart based on combine-accumulate approach.

Development of a safe operation capability chart as the design basis of a rudder area

  • Ship owners now demand a new design approach for the rudder that considers detailed design information such as maneuverability and environmental loads etc. on a quantified basis. In this paper, we developed the concept of a safe operation capability chart for the design of a rudder area. The chart can be used as the basis of design considering the maneuverability and environmental loads. To confirm the applicability of the safe operation capability chart for use as the basis of design, four different rudders are assumed in this work. First, it is determined whether or not it is appropriate to design a rudder by applying a conventional design approach based on IMO maneuvering tests. The proposed concept is reviewed for use as the basis of the design by investigating the effect of rudder area on capability charts that are plotted according to the rudder under various environmental conditions.

Economic Adjustment Design For $\bar{X}$ Control Chart: A Markov Chain Approach

  • The Markov Chain approach is used to develop an economic adjustment model of a process whose quality can be affected by a single special cause, resulting in changes of the process mean by incorrect adjustment of the process when it is operating according to its capability. The $\bar{X}$ control chart is thus used to signal the special cause. It is demonstrated that the expressions for the expected cycle time and the expected cycle cost are easier to obtain by the proposed approach than by adopting that in Collani, Saniga and Weigang (1994). Furthermore, this approach would be easily extended to derive the expected cycle cost and the expected cycle time for the case of multiple special causes or multiple control charts. A numerical example illustrates the proposed method and its application.

Design of a Curtailed-SPRT Control Chart (단축-축차관리도의 설계)

  • This paper proposes a curtailed-sequential probability ratio test (SPRT) control chart. For using the conventional SPRT control chart, the number of items inspected in a sampling point should have no restriction since items in a sampling point are inspected one by one until an SPRT Is terminated. The number of observations taken in a sampling point, however, has an upper bound since sampling and testing of an item is time-consuming or expensive. When the sample size reaches the upper bound without evidence of an in-control or out-of-control state of a process, the proposed chart makes a decision using the sample mean of all observations taken in a sampling point. The properties of the Proposed chart are obtained by a Markov chain approach and the performance of the chart is compared with fixed sample size (FSS) and variable sample size (VSS) control charts. A comparative study shows that the proposed chart performs better than VSS control charts as well as conventional FSS control charts.

  • This study presents a fuzzy set-theoretic approach for preparing a from-to chart and a relationship chart in order to increase system effectiveness through the proper layout planning. Though there have been a number of studies on the layout planning, they have been not well applied in industries because of difficulties in preparation of the two charts. In this study, a fuzzy mag count as a transportability measure is suggested, and the procedure for preparing two charts is explained on the basis of the count. Finally, this approach is applied to the layout planning of a ship repair shop.
