This study was performed to investigate the effects of tyrosinase inhibition, xanthine oxidase inhibition and nitrite-scavenging effects of gamma-irradiated Schizandrae Fructus extracts from different solvents. Schizandrae Fructus was extracted by hot water, ethanol, acetone and methanol, and the extracts were irradiated 10, 20 and 30 kGy with gamma rays. All extracts from Schizandrae Fructus showed inhibition effect against tyrosinase. Tyrosinase inhibition effect of Schizandrae Fructus were higher in solvent extracts than hot water extracts by irradiation. The Schizandrae Fructus extracts had a higher inhibitory effect against xanthine oxidase, and the effect was not changed by irradiation. Nitrite scavenging activity, which was measured at various pH conditions (1.2, 3.0, 6.0), was the highest in Schizandrae Fructus extracts at pH 1.2 and 3.0. Hot water extracts provided higher nitrite scavenging effect than those of the methanol, ethanol and acetone extracts. Gamma-Irradiation may not influence on biological activites of the extracts when irradiated up to 30 kGy.
This study was conducted to investigate the physiological functionality of the hot water, 70% acetone and 70% methanol extracts from the pumpkin. Extraction yield and pH of each solvent extract from various parts of pumpkin were investigated. Extraction yield from flesh were from 63.7% for 70% acetone to 68.2% for hot water. pH of 70% acetone extracts and hot water extracts were 5.01∼5.45 and 5.78∼6.22, respectively, and pH of the flesh part was the highest. The content of soluble solid was the highest in methanol extracts. Flesh part contained the highest concentration of soluble solid. Color of the extracts from fiber was higher than that of other parts. The content of the total sugar was in the decreasing order of flesh, fiber and peel. The content of total polyphenol and flavonoid from each solvent extract of peel was higher than that of other parts. Some differences were observed in physiological functionality of each solvent extracts from various parts of pumpkin. The nitrite scavenging ability of hot water extract from flesh, acetone and methanol extract from fiber and edible portion was higher than other parts. The electron donating ability was the highest in acetone and methanol extracts of peel, methanol extracts of flesh and edible portion, and acetone extracts of fiber.

The antioxidant and cholinesterase inhibitory activities of the acetone and dichloromethane ($CH_2Cl_2$) extracts of the by-products (heads, shells, and tails) of Pandalus borealis, Pandalus hypsinotus, and Pandalopsis japonica belonging to the family Pandalidae were investigated and their bioactivities were compared. The antioxidant and cholinesterase inhibitory activities of the organic solvent extracts of three shrimp by-products were evaluated using 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and 2,2'-Azino-bis[3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid] ($ABTS^+$) radical scavenging activities, reducing power and xanthine oxidase (XO) inhibitory activity assays and Ellman's colorimetric method. The extracts of P. hypsinotus exhibited the highest antioxidant and cholinesterase inhibitory activities. The acetone extracts showed more potent activities toward antioxidant and cholinesterase inhibition compared with the $CH_2Cl_2$ extracts. Furthermore, the total carotenoid contents of the acetone extracts were higher than those of the $CH_2Cl_2$ extracts. Thus, the carotenoid contents may affect antioxidant and cholinesterase inhibition. Our results suggest that the shrimp by-products could act as a nutraceutical agent to prevent oxidative stress and Alzheimer's disease.

Background: Roots of Withania somnifera (WS) are a celebrated medicinal ingredient in Ayurvedic and many other indigenous systems of medicine. The present study investigates the effect of the phytochemical composition of the extracts on their antioxidant and reducing activities. Methods: WS roots were extracted with water, acetone, aqueous methanol (1:1), and methanol:-chloroform:water (1:1:1) to obtain aqueous, acetone, hydro-methanolic, and methanol-chloroform-water extracts. Thereafter, phytochemical constitution and antioxidant and reducing activities of the extracts were compared using different qualitative and quantitative tests. Results: Maximum extraction recovery was obtained with 50% aqueous methanol whereas extraction with acetone yielded the poorest recovery. Methanol-chloroform-water extract had the highest content of phytochemical constituents, except tannins, and also exhibited the highest antioxidant and reducing activities. Conclusion: Phytochemical composition and antioxidant and reducing activities of the extracts were positively associated with the use of organic solvents during the extraction process. Alkaloids and flavonoids were the most important contributors in the antioxidant and reducing activities of the extracts.

The antioxidant and anticancer activities of Styela plicata extracts were evaluated. When extracts were prepared with fresh Styela plicata (FR), extraction yield was in the order of methanol > ethanol = acetone > water among treated solvents. However, the extraction order was methanol > water > ethanol > acetate in freeze dried Styela plicata (FD). Radical scavenging activity was the highest in acetone extracts $(37.39\%)$ from FR, while in ethanol extracts $(78.40\%)$ from FD. Reducing power of FR was the greatest in methanol extracts (1.076), and that of FD in ethanol extracts (1.360). The acetone extracts from FD showed significant anticancer activity when revealed with human colon cancer cell line HT-29. These results indicated that extraction yields and properties of extracts from Styela plicata were variable depending on solvent and/or physicochemical state, and appropriate extraction process could provide some valuable bioactive materials from Styela plicata.
Plectranthus amboinicus Benth (Lamiaceae) is a medicinal plant native to India, and its leaves are widely used in several traditional medicinal preparations. The purpose of this study was to detect and quantify phenolics present in ethyl acetate and acetone extracts of P. amboinicus leaves, and evaluate their antioxidant, antibacterial, antimutagenic and anticancer activities. The HPLC chromatograms of crude leaf extracts indicated the presence of phenolics like caffeic acid, coumaric acid, rutin, quercetin and gallic acid, which were present in the range of 0.01 - 1.41 mg/g in ethyl acetate and 0.03 - 1.93 mg/g in the acetone extract. The acetone extract showed statistically (p < 0.05) higher antioxidant activity ($IC_{50}$, 99.59 ${\mu}g/ml$) than ethyl acetate extract ($IC_{50}$, 149.96 ${\mu}g/ml$). Statistically (p < 0.05) higher antimutagenicity was shown by acetone extract (46.16%) as compare to ethyl acetate extract (12.16%) at 500 ${\mu}g/plate$ concentration. The acetone extract showed higher antibacterial activity than ethyl acetate extract, and both the extracts showed highest activity against B. cereus (375 and 625 ${\mu}g/ml$, respectively) and lowest activity against Y. enterocolitica (1000 and 1125 ${\mu}g/ml$, respectively). Both the extracts also showed inhibitory effect on cancer cell lines HCT-15 and MCF-7. These results suggest that the leaves of P. amboinicus possess various biological activities, and validate the traditional use of the leaves of P. amboinicus against cold, infection and ulceration.

To detect bioactive compounds present in unused marine resources, the screening for the 5-lipoxygenase inhitors in Asterina pectinifera, Halocynthia roretzi skin, Nototodarus sloani ink, Anthocidaris crassispina skin, SArgassum horneri, Agarum cribrosum, Odonthalia corymbifera and Desmarestia ligulata was carried out. THe ether and acetone extracts of Sargassum horneri had the strongest antioxygnic activityon lipid oxidation by potato lipoxygenase-1 (one of 5-lipoygenase) among the tested marine samples and their $IC_{50}$ were 0.3 and 1.1g/ml, respectively. The ether and acetone extracts of Asterina pectinifera, the acetone extracts of Halocynthia roretizi, and the acetone extracts of Nototodarus sloani ink had strong inhibitory activity and their $IC_{50}$ were 72.5, 65, 13.3 and $13.3\mu\textrm{g}/ml$, respectively. In addition, the $IC_{50}$ of the acetone extracts of Agarum cribrosum and Desmarestia ligulata, and the ether extracts of Desmarestia ligulata were 15.5, 35 and $30.5\mu\textrm{g}/ml$, respectively. The nonpolar solvent (ether, acetone) extracts of tested marine organism had more antioxigenic effect against 5-lipoxygenase than the polar solvent(water) extracts.

In this study, antioxidant activities of acetone/dichloromethane and methanol extracts of Arctic seaweeds were investigated. The antioxidant properties of both extracts of arctic seaweed were evaluated using two different peroxynitrite tests, including scavenging power on authentic peroxynitrite and inhibitory activities on peroxynitrite generation from 3-morpholinosydnonimine (SIN-1) producing superoxide anion and nitric oxide simultaneously in vitro. At concentration of $10\;{\mu}g/ml$, the acetone/dichloromethane and methanol extracts of Odonthalia dentata exhibited 54.6 and 64.2% inhibition against peroxynitrite generation from SIN-1 while they exhibited 24.3 and 23.0% scavenging activities on authentic peroxynitrite, respectively. On the other hand, the acetone/dichloromethane extract of Polysiphonia stricta exhibited 61.8% inhibition only against the induced peroxynitrite from SIN-1. Furthermore, the crude extracts of Odonthalia dentata and Polysiphonia stricta were fractionated into n-hexane, 85% aq. MeOH, n-BuOH, and $H_2O$ fractions, successively, and only 85% aq. MeOH fraction exhibited the best inhibition.

The antimicrobial activity of acetone, hexane, dichloromethane, and methanol extracts from leaves, stems, immature green fruits, and red fruits of tomato plants was examined against six phytopathogens. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of the acetonic extracts from these four plant parts was lower than that of the other solvents. Among the acetonic extracts, tomato leaves had a lower MIC than the other tomato parts. The acetonic extract from tomato leaves was therefore selected as a source of antimicrobial substances. The acetonic extract from tomato leaves inhibited mycelial growth of Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. lycopersici, Glomerella cingulata, and Rhizoctonia solani. Mycelial growth of R. solani treated with acetone extract from leaves showed more susceptibility than the other phytopathogens. Using 0.31 mg/ml of the acetonic extract from leaves, mycelial growth of R. solani on days 1, 2, and 3 decreased by 50.0, 52.1, and 64.0%, respectively, compared with acetone solvent treatment. The antimicrobial compounds effective against R. solani were identified as linolenic acid and caffeic acid by bioautography and GC-MS. These two compounds were used to treat six phytopathogens to confirm their antimicrobial activities. Linolenic acid inhibited mycelial growth of R. solani, while caffeic acid showed only slight antimicrobial activity. Results indicated that we propose extracts from tomato leaves which included antimicrobial compounds may provide a new lead in the pursuit of new biological sources of agrochemical candidates.
In this study, we investigated on antioxidative activity and nitric oxide production inhibitory activity of various solvent extracts of Lespedeza bicolor. The total polyphenol content of the methanol extract was 192.6 mg/g and flavonoid content of the acetone extract was 40.6 mg/g, as the highest content. In DPPH radical scavenging ability, $SC_{50}$ values of the ethanol and methanol extract were exhibited $0.69mg/m{\ell}$ and $0.89mg/m{\ell}$, respectively. However, in nitric oxide(NO) scavenging ability, $SC_{50}$ values of the acetone was exhibited $0.72mg/m{\ell}$ as the highest activity. Moreover, the acetone extract showed strong NO production inhibitory effect in lipopolysaccharide(LPS)-stimulated Raw 264.7 cell. In the cytotoxicity measurement by MTT assay, the extracts were exhibited Raw 264.7 cell viabilities of 92.57~129.04% as nontoxic result in concentration of $65{\sim}650{\mu}g/m{\ell}$. As a result, the acetone extract of L. bicolor could be applicable to functional materials for anti-inflammatory related fields.
