A Study on Development in Academic Libraries (대학도서관 개발에 관한 연구)

  • Academic libraries have been facing threats and opportunities at the same time because of a successful combination of information and communication technologies such as the internet. This study presented the need for library development in academic libraries, to assist with increasing costs and declining budgets and fulfilling users' expectations of additional information services. It suggested as a guide for library development of academic libraries in Korea through providing examples of various methods and cases for library development. As a result of research, this study provided the basic ideas of academic library development, which includes forming a community of friends of library and developing fundraising and fee-based information services.

A Study on the User Satisfaction and Loyalty of University Library Users (대학도서관의 이용자만족도와 충성도에 관한 연구 - K대학도서관의 이용자를 대상으로 -)

  • The research purpose for this paper is adopt the European Customer Satisfaction Index(ECSI) on a survey performed on library users to measure users' satisfaction and loyalty factors. A questionnaire is designed to integrate measurement into the library's management system for visual analysis of what users expect from library. Results from the survey show that users expect more improvement in the library environment and collection of printed publications section. Conclusion from the survey. we were able to make the following suggestions to satisfy user expectations: (1) improve library environment (2) increase collections of printed publications and periodical to meet readers' demands (3) offer more fiendly and helpful user service.

  • This study intends to provide guidance for library design and assessment by eliciting the emotional vocabulary related to academic library space. In order to accomplish the goal of this study, 12 major emotional vocabularies related to academic library space were derived through 5 stages of extraction and refinement processes. Literature search and analysis of preceding research, focus group interview and survey of academic librarians and users of the academic library, evaluation of similarity through KJ Method, etc., selected 12 adjectives of emotional vocabulary as follows: diverse, satisfactory, necessary, full, clean, stable, appropriate, harmonious, open, warm, natural, and excellent.

A Study on the Awareness of Academic Library Users on the Research Support Service (대학도서관 이용자의 연구지원서비스 인식에 관한 연구)

  • This research analyzed the type of major research and support services provided by libraries in academic institutions. The research also investigated the awareness of users using the research and support services. We found that the awareness was influenced by users' major and status. In particular, prior usage of the services had statistically significant result depending on users' major and status. On the other hand, the rank of faculty members or the year of study for students were found to not have a significant influence on the general perception of the research support services. We also found that researchers require the support services in every stages of their study. In addition, the preference of training method and research guidance for such services differed by users' major.

A Study of Information Needs of Academic Library Users: With Special Emphasis on Reference Questions (대학도서관 이용자의 정보요구에 관한 연구: 참고질문을 중심으로)

  • This study attempts to identify users' potential information needs in a medium-sized academic library by analyzing reference questions raised by library users for 64 days from October 10th to December 13th, 2000. A total of 474 reference questions were analysed of which only 10.1% were pure reference questions that dealt with the professional knowledge of reference librarians. 71.0% had nothing to do with professional knowledge, being directional(29.3%), mechanic(23.8%), and library policy related(l7.9%). Improvements in sign system and guiding materials in the library should be made to deliver reference services of good quality to academic library users.

  • The major indicating data of academic, public, and school libraries which were mentioned in the Korea library yearbook 1998 through 2007 were collected for this study. The results were analyzed and the methods that may be applied to a library management were presented in this paper. The collected data were analyzed by using the MS-excel and SPSS. The numbers of libraries, personnels, collections and their used ones, users, management budget were used for the variables of this study, and the correlation coefficients and non-parametric method etc. were used for the variable analysis. The results show that public and school libraries are growing consistently, but academic ones get stagnant currently.

Customer Satisfaction and Loyalty of Academic Library Users Based on Their Perceptions of Library Service Quality (서비스품질지각에 기반한 대학도서관 이용자 만족도와 충성도 분석)

  • This study investigates the influences of the perceptions on the dimensions of the library service quality (library staff, supports for the service, library materials and information resources, and facilities and equipments) of academic library users on the customer satisfaction, importance of the services, and the loyalty (reuse intentions). Based on the questionnaires surveyed from 403 undergraduate students of the K University, it analyzed the data using SPSS 12.0. All four dimensions of the service quality influenced statistically on the customer satisfaction. The dimension of the support for the service, importance of the service, and customer satisfaction influenced statistically on the loyalty.

A Study on Library Anxiety of Public Library Users (공공도서관 이용자의 도서관불안에 관한 연구)

  • This study analytically examined library anxiety that various users felt when they use public libraries, by measuring it on K-LAS. The findings show that the library anxiety is varied depending on users' age, gender, academic careers, usage purposes, frequency of use and size of libraries. It suggested the guidance and education about the use of libraries, environmental improvement based on the remodeling of libraries, wearing of nameplates written in big characters for identifying librarians and the education for users' understanding and the provision of device and equipment manuals according the levels of users' experiences, as measures for overcoming the library anxiety, enhancing usage satisfaction and activating usage.

  • In the climate of increasing calls for academic assessment, the author undertook a study to ascertain availability of original texts and their translations in the academic library. The object of this study is to compare the use frequency of original texts by academic major of users in the university libraries. To achieve this object, the author collected the data stored in 3 Korean university library online systems from September 10th to 30th, 1995 and tested the hypotheses by using the Minitab statistical package.   • In this study, we wanted to find out about the perceptions and the requirements of the academic information service users about the Library 2.0. This study used the survey research method, which utilized the web-based survey using the academic information service users as the target population. Specifically, we studied whether and how the users recognized and experienced the Web 2.0 technologies and its related services with respect to Library 2.0. In addition, we gathered the requirements for the Library 2.0 concept applied information services. The analysis results showed that the users were in need of obtaining the most up-to-date information and also using the professional information services such as the experts generated information contents and the Google Scholar type document reference information services instead of the Library 2.0 services based on the Web 2.0 technologies.
