  • Automotive Radar Systems are currently under development for various applications to increase accuracy and reliability. The target tracking is most important in single or multiple target environments for accuracy. The tracking algorithm provides smoothed and predicted data for target position and velocity(Doppler). To this end, the fixed gain filter(${\alpha}{\beta}$ filter, ${\alpha}{\beta}{\gamma}$ filter) and dynamic filter(Kalman filter, Singer-Kalman filter, etc) are commonly used. Gating is used to decide whether an observation is assigned to an existing track or new track. Gating algorithms are normally based on computing a statistical error distance between an observation and prediction. The data association takes the observation-to-track pairings that satisfied gating and determines which observation-to-track assignment will actually be made. For data association, NNPDA(Nearest Neighbor Probabilistic Data Association) algorithm is proposed. In this paper, we designed a target tracking system developed for an Automotive Radar System. We show the experimental results of the 77GHz FMCW radar sensor on the roads. Four tracking algorithms(${\alpha}{\beta}$ filter, ${\alpha}{\beta}{\gamma}$ filter, 2nd order Kalman filter, Singer-Kalman filter) have been compared and analyzed to evaluate the performance in test scenario.

  • A 77 GHz 3-stage low noise amplifier (LNA) employing one common source and two cascode stages is developed using $0.13{\mu}m$ CMOS process. To compensate for the low gain which is caused by lossy silicon substrate and parasitic element of CMOS transistor, positive feedback technique using parasitic inductance of bypass capacitor is adopted to cascode stages. The developed LNA shows gain of 7.2 dB, Sl1 of -16.5 dB and S22 of -19.8 dB at 77 GHz. The return loss bandwidth of LNA is 71.6 to 80.9 GHz (12%). The die size is as small as $0.7mm\times0.8mm$ by using bias line as inter-stage matching networks. This LNA shows possibility of 77 GHz automotive RADAR system using $0.13{\mu}m$ CMOS process, which has advantage in cost compared to sub-100 nm CMOS process.

  • The most important requirement for the automotive radars is the simultaneous target range and velocity measurement under environment of multi-target, clutters, multi-path, and so on. If the many vehicles with 77GHz FMCW(Frequency Modulation Continuous Wave) radar system are in the near area we should consider the interference signals occurred by other radar systems because these signals reduce exact detection of range and velocity. In this paper, we propose the interference cancellation method, which each vehicle radar transmits chirp trains with the different frequency sweep shapes. The proposed method is applied into the various applications such as an intelligent vehicle, Robot, and UGV(Unmanned Ground Vehicle).

  • In this paper, we design the hardware platform and implement the embedded software based on the FPGA and the DSP for the automotive 77GHz FMCW radar system. This embedded software is built into the DSP as the multi-tasking architecture to support the basic target detection algorithm and the Ethernet link. The designed GUI(Graphic User Interface) provides ability to adjust parameters associated with the radar performance, to monitor signal processing results, and to download the raw received signal. The designed platform can be used to develop the optimal detection algorithms for the various applications.

  • This study presents the performance evaluation results of a 77-GHz waveguide slot array antenna that was fabricated by attaching a patterned printed circuit board(PCB) on a metal block. The 77-GHz waveguide was divided into a top plate and a bottom structure. The top plate was fabricated using a patterned PCB that can implement a fine slot at low cost. The top cover was then bonded to the bottom metal structure with a waveguide trough using anisotropic conductive film. For evaluating the antenna performance, a $1{\times}16$ slot array antenna was fabricated using our proposed method and the gain and pattern were measured and compared with the simulation results. Though the measurement results demonstrate a reduction in gain of around 2.3~3.5 dB compared to the simulation results assuming ideal bonding conditions, the pattern hardly changed and the slot antenna with a gain of approximately 17 dBi at 77 GHz can be easily manufactured at a low cost using the proposed method.

  • With the increased demand for automotive radar systems, mutual interference between vehicles has become a crucial issue that must be resolved to ensure better automotive safety. Mutual interference between frequency modulated continuous waveform (FMCW) radar system appears in the form of increased noise levels in the frequency domain and results in a failure to separate the target object from interferers. The traditional fast fourier transform (FFT) algorithm, which is used to estimate the beat frequency, is vulnerable in interference-limited automotive radar environments. In order to overcome this drawback, we propose a high-resolution frequency estimation technique for use in interference environments. To verify the performance of the proposed algorithms, a 77GHz FMCW radar system is considered. The proposed method employs a high-resolution algorithm, specially the multiple signal classification and estimation of signal parameters via rotational invariance techniques, which are able to estimate beat frequency accurately.

  • In this paper, we designed and fabricated an electromagnetic(EM) wave absorber for automotive radar in cars using $TiO_2$ as a dielectric material and chlorinated polyethylene(CPE) as a binder. First of all, we confirmed that the optimum composition ratio of $TiO_2$ was about 70 wt.%. The complex relative permittivity of a sample containing $TiO_2$: CPE=70:30 wt.% was calculated from S-parameter. The EM wave absorption abilities were simulated for the EM wave absorbers of different thickness using the calculated relative permittivity, and the EM wave absorber was manufactured based on the simulated design. A comparison of simulated and measured results is in good agreement. Measurement shows that a 1.85 mm thick absorber has absorption ability higher than 20 dB in the frequency range of $76{\sim}77$ GHz for automotive radars.

  • 77GHz FMCW(Frequency Modulation Continuous Wave) radar system has been used for automotive active safety systems. In typical automotive radar, the moving target detection and clutter cancellation including stationary targets are very important signal processing algorithms. This paper proposed the moving target detection algorithm which improve the detection probability and reduce the false alarm rate. First, the proposed moving target beat-frequency extraction filter is used in order to suppress clutter, and then the data association is applied by using the extracted moving target beat-frequency. Then, the zero-Doppler target is eliminated to remove the rest of clutter.

  • To fabricate nanometer scale InGaAs HEMTs, we have successfully developed various novel nano-patterning techniques, including sidewall-gate process and e-beam resist flowing method. The sidewall-gate process was developed to lessen the final line length, by means of the sequential procedure of dielectric re-deposition and etch-back. The e-beam resist flowing was effective to obtain fine line length, simply by applying thermal excitation to the semiconductor so that the achievable final line could be reduced by the dimension of the laterally migrated e-beam resist profile. Applying these methods to the device fabrication, we were able to succeed in making 30nm $In_{0.7}Ga_{0.3}As$ HEMTs with excellent $f_T$ of 426GHz. Based on nanometer scale InGaAs HEMT technology, several high performance millimeter-wave integrated circuits have been successfully fabricated, including 77GHz MMIC chipsets for automotive radar application.
