Assigning an exact boundary condition is of great importance in three-dimensional (3D) magnetotelluric (MT) modeling, in which no source is considered in a computing domain. This paper presents a 3D MT modeling algorithm utilizing a Dirichlet condition for a 2D host. To compute boundary values for a model with a 2D host, we need to conduct additional 2D MT modeling. The 2D modeling consists of transverse magnetic and electric modes, which are determined from the relationship between the polarization of plane wave and the strike direction of the 2D structure. Since the 3D MT modeling algorithm solves Maxwell's equations for electric fields using the finite difference method with a staggered grid that defines electric fields along cell edges, electric fields are calculated at the same place in the 2D modeling. The algorithm developed in this study can produce reliable MT responses for a 3D model with a 2D host.
Magnetotelluric (MT) survey investigates electrical structure of subsurface by measuring natural electromagnetic fields on the earth surface. For the accurate interpretation of MT data, the precise three-dimensional (3-D) modeling algorithm is prerequisite. Since MT responses are affected by electrical anisotropy of medium, the modeling algorithm has to incorporate the electrical anisotropy especially when analyzing time-lapse MT data sets, for monitoring engineered geothermal system (EGS) reservoir, because changes in different-vintage MT-data sets are small. This study developed a MT modeling algorithm for the simulation MT responses in the presence of electrical anisotropy by improving a pre-existing staggered-grid finite-difference MT modeling algorithm. After verifying the developed algorithm, we analyzed the effect of vertical transversely isotropic (VTI) anisotropy on MT responses. In addition, we are planning to extend the applicability of the developed algorithm which can simulate not only the horizontal transversely isotropic (HTI) anisotropy, but also the tiled transversely isotropic (TTI) anisotropy.
This paper presents a practical inversion method for recovering a three-dimensional (3D) resistivity model and static shifts simultaneously. Although this method is based on a Gauss-Newton approach that requires a sensitivity matrix, the computer time can be greatly reduced by implementing a simple and effective procedure for updating the sensitivity matrix using the Broyden's algorithm. In this research, we examine the approximate inversion procedure and the weighting factor ${\beta}$ for static shifts through inversion experiments using synthetic MT data. In methods using the full sensitivity matrix constructed only once in the iteration process, a procedure using the full sensitivity in the earlier stage is useful to produce the smallest rms data misfit. The choice of ${\beta}$ is not critical below some threshold value. Synthetic examples demonstrate that the method proposed in this paper is effective in reconstructing a 3D resistivity structure from static-shifted MT data.
A magentotelluric (MT) survey at the Uiseong area has been performed for the site investigation of pilot scale $CO_2$ sequestration. The purpose of the MT survey is to delineate deeply extended fracture systems that can act as a leakage path of injected $CO_2$ Plume. Since the target area is extremely noisy in electromagentic sense, low frequency data below 1 Hz cannot be used for inversion. Two- and three-dimensional interpretation of the MT data showed a very clear conductive anomaly, which has the direction of $N55\sim65^{\circ}W$ and is extended roughly down to 1.6 km. It have the same direction with the strike-slip faults, the Gaeum and Geumcheon Faults. On the contrary, the eastern part of the survey area shows relatively homogeneous to the depth of 2 km though some small fractures at shallow depths can be found. Test drilling and high-definition borehole surveys should be followed at the eastern part of the survey area and hydraulic fracturing is required for injection of $CO_2$, because mean porosity of the sedimetary rock in the area is only 1.47%.
A three-dimensional (3D) magnetotelluric (MT) survey has been carried out to delineate subsurface structures and possible fractures, for development of low-temperature geothermal resources in Pohang, Korea. Quite good quality MT data could be obtained throughout the survey region by locating the remote reference in Kyushu, Japan, which is ${\sim}480\;km$ from the centre of the field site. 3D modelling and inversion are performed taking into account the sea effect in MT measurements near the seashore. The nearby sea in the Pohang area affects MT data at frequencies below $1\;Hz{\sim}0.2\;Hz$, depending on the distance from the seashore. The most severe sea effects were observed in the south-east parts of the survey area, closer to Youngil Bay. 3D inversion with and without the seawater constraint showed very similar results at shallow depths, roughly down to 2 km. At greater depths, however, a strong sea effect seems to form a fictitious conductive structure in ordinary 3D inversion, especially in the south-eastern part of the survey region. Comparison between drilling results and the resistivity profiles from inversions showed that five layered structures can be distinguished the subsurface beneath the target area. They are: (a) semi-consolidated mudstones with resistivity less than $10\;{\Omega}m$, which are ${\sim}300\;m$ thick in the northern part and ${\sim}600\;m$ thick in the southern part of the survey area; (b) occasional occurrence of trachybasalt and lapilli tuff within the mudstone layer has resistivity of a few tens of${\Omega}m$, (c) intrusive rhyolite ${\sim}400\;m$ thick has resistivity of several hundreds of ${\Omega}m$, (d) alternating sandstone and mudstone down to 1.5 km depth shows resistivity of ${\sim}100\;{\Omega}m$, (e) a conductive structure was found at a depth of ${\sim}3\;km$, but more geological and geophysical study should be carried out to identify this structure.
A field campaign of magnetotelluric (MT) and audio-frequency MT (AMT) survey was done at 36 measurement points as a complementary for the previous 44 MT measurements completed during the period of 2005-2006. The purpose of additional MT survey is to investigate the possible fracture system in Seokmo Island, which is conceived to be crucial in accumulation and migration of geothermal hot spring in this area. We have done 2D and 3D inversions of overall MT and AMT data distributed on a grid to interpret subsurface of extended area. The inversion results reveal that at least two major faults are imaged in the inversion results, one of which is in NNE-SWW with steep dip, and another is in E-W direction.
A magnetotelluric (MT) survey has been performed to delineate deeply extended fracture systems at the geothermal field in Seokmo Island, Korea. To assist interpretation of the MT data, geological surveying and well logging of existing wells were also performed. The surface geology of the island shows Cretaceous and Jurassic granite in the north and Precambrian schist in the south. The geothermal regime has been found along the boundary between the schist and Cretaceous granite. Because of the deep circulation along the fracture system, geothermal gradient of the target area exceeds $45^{\circ}C/km$, which is much higher than the average geothermal gradient in Korea. 2D and 3D inversions of MT data clearly showed a very conductive anomaly, which is interpreted as a fracture system bearing saline water that extends at least down to 1.5 km depth and is inclined eastwards. After drilling down to the depth of 1280 m, more than 4000 tons/day of geothermal water overflowed with temperature higher than $70^{\circ}C$. This water showed very similar chemical composition and temperature to those from another existing well, so that they can be considered to have the same origin; i.e. from the same fracture system. A new geothermal project for combined heat and power generation was launched in 2009 in Seokmo Island, based on the survey. Additional geophysical investigations including MT surveys to cover a wider area, seismic reflection surveys, borehole surveys, and well logging of more than 20 existing boreholes will be conducted.
This article reviews recent developments in three-dimensional (3-D) magntotelluric (MT) imaging. The inversion of MT data is fundamentally ill-posed, and therefore the resultant solution is non-unique. A regularizing scheme must be involved to reduce the non-uniqueness while retaining certain a priori information in the solution. The standard approach to nonlinear inversion in geophysis has been the Gauss-Newton method, which solves a sequence of linearized inverse problems. When running to convergence, the algorithm minimizes an objective function over the space of models and in the sense produces an optimal solution of the inverse problem. The general usefulness of iterative, linearized inversion algorithms, however is greatly limited in 3-D MT applications by the requirement of computing the Jacobian(partial derivative, sensitivity) matrix of the forward problem. The difficulty may be relaxed using conjugate gradients(CG) methods. A linear CG technique is used to solve each step of Gauss-Newton iterations incompletely, while the method of nonlinear CG is applied directly to the minimization of the objective function. These CG techniques replace computation of jacobian matrix and solution of a large linear system with computations equivalent to only three forward problems per inversion iteration. Consequently, the algorithms are efficient in computational speed and memory requirement, making 3-D inversion feasible.
An efficient algorithm for inverting static-shifted magnetotelluric (MT) data has been proposed to produce a three-dimensional (3D) resistivity model. In the Gauss-Newton approach, computational costs associated with construction of a full sensitivity matrix usually make 3D MT inversion impractical. This computational difficulty may be overcome by using approximate sensitivities. We use four kinds of sensitivities in particular orders in the inversion process. These sensitivities are computed 1) analytically for an initial, homogeneous earth, 2) exactly for a current model, 3) approximately by the Broyden method, and 4) approximately using the previous adjoint fields. Inversion experiments with static-shifted synthetic and field MT data indicate that inversion results are highly dependent on characteristics of data and thus applying various combinations of sensitivities is helpful in obtaining a good image of the subsurface structure with reasonable computation time.

This article reviews the development of three-dimensional (3-D) magnetotelluric (MT) modeling. The 3-D modeling of electromagnetic fields is essential in understanding the physics of MT soundings, and in implementing an inversion method to reconstruct a 3-D resistivity image. Although various numerical schemes have been developed over the last two decades, practical methods have been quite limited. However, the recent rapid improvement in computer speed and memory, as well as the advance in iterative solution algorithms for a large system of equations, makes it possible to model the MT responses of complex 3-D structures, which have been very difficult to simulate before. The use of staggered grids in finite difference method has become popular, conserving a magnetic flux and an electric current and allowing for realistic discontinuous fields. The convergence of numerical solutions has been greatly accelerated by adopting Krylov subspace methods, proper preconditioning techniques, and static divergence corrections. The vector finite-element method using edge elements is also free from the discontinuity problem, and seems a natural choice for modeling complex structures including irregular topography because its flexibility allows one to capture full geometric complexity.
