  • This study is intended to analyze flipped classroom learning activities, which have recently been spotlighted as a learner-centered teaching method in universities, from the perspective of cultural and historical activity theory. A survey and some participation observations were conducted with one professor and the students who participated in Educational Methods and Technology courses at A university. The components of the flipped classroom learning activities were analyzed based on the model of the activity system, and contradictions that appeared in the interactions between components were analyzed. Four implications were proposed for a more advanced flipped classroom learning activity system: the professor's and the learners' true identity recognition and role performance, strengthening the organic link between online and offline activities, support for alleviating the burden of teaching and learning preparation, and readjusting the system to support its smooth operation.

  • This study aims to investigate how flipped learning-based socioscientific issue instruction (FL-SSI instruction) affected middle school students' key competencies and character development. Traditional classrooms are constrained in terms of time and resources for exploring the issues and making decision on SSI. To address these concerns, we designed and implemented an SSI instruction adopting flipped learning. Seventy-three 8th graders participated in an SSI program on four topics for over 12 class periods. Two questionnaires were used as a main data source to measure students' key competencies and character development before and after the SSI instruction. In addition, student responses and shared experience from focus group interviews after the instruction were collected and analyzed. The results indicate that the students significantly improved their key competencies and experienced character development after the SSI instruction. The students presented statistically significant improvement in the key competencies (i.e., collaboration, information and technology, critical thinking and problem-solving, and communication skills) and in two out of three factors in character and values as global citizens (social and moral compassion, and socio-scientific accountability). Interview data supports the quantitative results indicating that SSI instruction with a flipped learning strategy provided students in-depth and rich learning opportunities. The students responded that watching web-based videos prior to class enabled them to deeply understand the issue and actively engage in discussion and debate once class began. Furthermore, the resulting gains in available class time deriving from a flipped learning approach allowed the students to examine the issue from diverse perspectives.

  • The advances in science technology brought about a new form of learning called flipped-learning: a combination of on-line and off-line learning. A flipped learning is a form of blended learning which has become quite popular, nowadays, in the field of education. Despite the emphasis on the importance of medical humanities in medical education program, there are no effective teaching and learning models to realize the purpose of medical humanities education. This study explores the possibility of flipped-learning to apply medical humanities classes. The class was designed based on the ADDIE model consisting of five stages, analysis - design - development - execution - evaluation. In order to do 'flipped-learning,' the instructor reconstructs the purpose of medical humanities education, instructional purpose and content, and analyzed learner. The contents of the medical humanities class were structured considering the purpose of the introduction to the medical humanities in the medical education program and the competencies that medical personnel should have in the developed health care environment. The instructor produces a video of the lecture and makes it possible to use LMS (Learning Management System) before and after classes, and conducts discussion activities so that learner-learner and learner-teacher interaction could actively occur during the class. The result of applying medical humanities lesson as flipped learning is as follows: First, it can realize the essence of medical humanities education. Second, it contributes to strengthening the competencies of health care provider. Third, flip learning can be used as a new teaching strategy for medical humanities education. The result of this study is expected to suggest new ways of introduction to teaching method in the traditional medical humanities class and contribute to the practice of designing and doing flipped learning of medical humanities class in the future.

  • This study is a literature study that analyzes empirical case study of Flipped learning application which has emerged as a method of future university education in Korea. The purpose of the study is to explore the use of digital media by learners in the Flipped learning applied courses in domestic universities considering current digital-based media environment. For this purpose, we analyzed the measurement variables and statistical significance of the preceding studies and analyzed the media utilization. The most important measurement variables were 'learning achievement' and 'class satisfaction', which were measures of effectiveness on the Flipped learning classes. All studies analyzed used media, but most studies focused on verifying the effectiveness of classroom classes, resulting in separate media utilization measurements in one study and statistically meaningful results for the 'video learning recognition' variable. The qualitative measurement related to the use of media for each study was presented as a separate analysis result. In the future, in order for effective follow-up studies on application of Flipped learning and digital media utilization, there are five main issues that need to be studied, which are securing the necessary treatment period for accurate effect measurement, etc.
