The biological activity of crude polyphenol fractions (WphF, EphE, VphF, and SphF) extracted from Cedrela sinensis using hot water, ethanol, and enzymes such as Viscozyme and Shearzyme was examined in this study. The yield of VphF was the highest (43.44%) among all fractions. The total polyphenol and flavonoid content of the fractions were highest after ethanol extraction (447.98 and 337.49 mg/g, respectively). Fractions obtained after hot water and ethanol treatment showed high antioxidant activity. All fractions, except for WphF, showed a significantly higher ${\alpha}$-glucosidase inhibitory activity than the acarbose. EphF and WphF showed the high acetylcholinesterase inhibition activity. All fractions showed more than 50% tyrosinase inhibition activity at 2 mg/mL concentration. According to these results, the crude polyphenol fractions from C. sinensis showed high antioxidative, ${\alpha}$-glucosidase inhibitory, and tyrosinase inhibitory activities. This study suggests that crude polyphenol fractions from C. sinensis, especially the WphF and EphF fractions, are good sources of functional food.

The purpose of this study was to investigate total polyphenols, total flavonoid, and DPPH radical scavenging activity in 26 species of Korean natural plants and 14 species of medicinal plant extracts. The plant containing the highest total polyphenols and total flavonoids were Plantago asiatica, and Lespedeza cuneata G. Don, respectively. The content of polyphenols and flavonoids in natural plants was the highest in Lespedeza cuneata G. Don, which also demonstrated high DPPH radical scavenging activity. In medicinal plant extract, Saururus chinensis (Lour.) Baill and Artemisiae Asiaticae Herba had the highest level of total polyphenols (194.60 and 203.92 mg/g extract, respectively) and DPPH radical scavenging activity. Diospyros kaki Thunb and Dryopteris crassirhizoma did not contain high levels of total polyphenols (112.98, 121.46 mg/g extract, respectively) and flavonoids (46.10, 58.69 mg/g extract respectively), but DPPH radical scavenging activity was relatively high. Further study regarding plants that exhibit higher total polyphenols, total flavonoid, and DPPH radical scavenging activity is needed.
The search for natural antioxidants as alternatives to synthetic products is growing. Microalgae have emerged as a source of natural antioxidants with significant and diverse health-promoting properties. In this study, the effects of hot-water extraction conditions on total polyphenol compounds (TPC) production were investigated for lipid extracted microalgae (LEA). In order to enhance the polyphenol productivity, the extraction variables including solvents, temperature, time and ethanol concentration were optimized. The results showed hot-water extraction provided a higher extraction efficiency than the organic solvents and extraction at high temperatures showed a better extraction efficiency. While hot-water extract showed a higher extraction efficiency compared to 98% ethanol extraction, the mixture of water and ethanol (40:60 v/v) showed the highest production of polyphenols. The maximum polyphenols of 3.35 mg GAE (gallic acid equivalent)/g DM were obtained at the optimized extraction time of 10 min, $100^{\circ}C$ and 40% ethanol, respectively. Although Tetraselmis KCTC 12236BP was preprocessed by hexane to remove lipid for bio-diesel production, the results showed LEA contains relatively high level of polyphenols compared to untreated microalgae which can be used in the production of value-added materials. The predictions obtained from the developed Peleg's model were compared with the experimental data under the same operating conditions. The predicted and experimental data were consistent, indicating the reliability of the model.

Antioxidative, antidiabetes, antibacterial, anticancer and angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitory activities of methanol extracts of dried persimmon, fresh persimmon and persimmon leaves were investigated. Total polyphenol content of dried persimmon, fresh persimmon and persimmon leaves were 147.79, 301.45 and $315.90\;{\mu}g/mg$, respectively, of which fresh persimmon and persimmon leaves had significantly higher total polyphenol than dried persimmon. Activities of DPPH radical scavenging, lipid peroxidation inhibition and salivary $\alpha$-amylase inhibition were increased in persimmon leaves related to total polyphenol contents. Anticancer activities against AGS of fresh persimmon and persimmon leaves were $65{\sim}70%$; however, there were no significant differences between dried persimmon and fresh persimmon on free radical scavenging activity and inhibitory activity of salivary $\alpha$-amylase. Also, extracts of dried persimmon, fresh persimmon and persimmon leaves showed good ACE inhibitory activities. Dried persimmon and fresh persimmon showed antibacterial activities on E.coli O157:H7. Therefore, there are many difference activities by dried and parts of persimmon. From this result, it is suggested that persimmon leaves is believed to have possible antioxidative, antidiabetes and anticancer capacities by polyphenol, but further studies on the identification of the active compound(s) as antioxidant, antidiabetic, antihypertensive and antibacterial materials will be needed to develop a better understanding of its potency on persimmons.
Over recent years, it has become evident that the central nervous system bidirectionally interacts with the gastrointestinal tract along the gut-brain axis. A series of preclinical studies indicate that the gut microbiota can modulate central nervous system function through a multitude of physiological functions. Polyphenols are ubiquitous plant chemicals included in foods such as fruits, vegetables, tea, coffee and wine, and their consumption is directly responsible for beneficial health effects due to antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, immunomodulatory, anticancer, vasodilating, and prebiotic-like effects. There is increasing evidence that dietary polyphenol can contribute to beneficial effects in neuronal protection acting against oxidative stress and inflammatory injury as well as in cognitive functions. In this paper, we overview the neuroprotective role of dietary polyphenols especially focusing on the neuroinflammation and neurovascular function by interaction with the gut microbiome. Polyphenol metabolites could directly act as neurotransmitters crossing the blood-brain barrier and modulating the cerebrovascular system or indirectly modulating gut microbiota. In addition, evidence suggests that dietary polyphenols are effective in preventing and managing neurological disorders, such as age-related cognitive decline and neurodegeneration, through a multitude of physiological functions. Dietary polyphenols are increasingly envisaged as a potential nutraceuticals in the prevention and treatment of neurological disorders, because they possess the ability to reduce neuroinflammation, to improve memory and cognitive function and to modulate the gut microbiota.
In this study, polyphenols were extracted from Angelica, which are known to have a high antioxidant content and the extraction process was optimized using the response surface methodology. The extraction yield and the total polyphenols were set as response values for the methodology. Quantitative factors in the extraction process were the extraction time, volume ratio of alcohol/ultrapure water, and extraction temperature. When considering both the main and interaction effects, the greatest influence factor on the extraction yield and total polyphenols was the extraction time. The optimum extraction time and temperature and alcohol/ultrapure water volume ratio for angelica were 2.8 h, $56.6^{\circ}C$ and 64.0 vol% respectively. The extraction yield and total polyphenols when using the conditions were calculated to be 24.6% and 8.76 mg GAE/g. respectively. Determination coefficients of regression equations for the extraction yield and total polyphenols were 81.4 and 75.4%, respectively. Also the overall satisfaction level was found to be 0.80 and the significance was confirmed within 5%.
Wood powder filled phenolic resin composites of different composition were prepared and their mechanical properties were investigated for optimum conditions. The composites showed maximum mechanical strength when the phenolic resin content was 45 wt%. Polyurethane prepolymer(PU) was evaluated as a modifier of the phenolic resin composites. Blocking of the isocyanates in the PU with phenol was necessary for homogeneous mixing of raw materials for the components. Maximum mechanical strength of the PU modified composites was observed when the PU content was 5 wt%. It was found that the mechanical strength of the composites cured at $210^{\circ}C$ were higher than those of the composites cured at $150^{\circ}C$.
In this study, antioxidative potentials of the crude extract and its four solvent fractions from the Arctic terrestrial plant Ranunculus heperporeus were evaluated by using four different activity tests, including the inhibition of intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) and lipid peroxidation in Raw 264.7 cells as well as determining the extent of both the scavenging of peroxynitrite ($ONOO^-$) and the oxidative damage of genomic DNA purified from Raw 264.7 cells. Based on a comparative analysis, n-BuOH, and 85% aq.MeOH solvent fractions showed good scavenging effects on the production of intracellcular ROS and inhibited membrane lipid peroxidation and DNA oxidation. In addition, n-BuOH and 85% aq.MeOH fractions exhibited good scavenging effects on both authentic peroxynitrite and one generated from SIN-1. Among the samples tested, the n-BuOH fraction revealed the strongest antioxidant effect.

This study examined the optimization of hot-water extraction conditions for maximizing the total polyphenol compounds (TPC) extracted from amaranth leaf. The effects of three independent variables, including extraction temperature, extraction time and ethanol concentration on TPC were investigated using central composite design (CCD). The concentration of TPC increased with increased levels of extraction temperature and time. The extraction temperature and the ethanol concentration showed the significant effect on TPC production (p<0.05). The predicted values at the optimized condition were acceptable when compared to the experimental values ($R^2=0.9566$). The optimum extraction conditions were as follows: temperature of $90.1^{\circ}C$, time of 50 min and ethanol concentration of 61.6% (v/v) for the maximum TPC of 12.6 mg GAE/g DM.
With the aim of using Bokbunja byproducts as natural pigments, characteristics of extracts were investigated after application of different extraction conditions. Total optical density (TOD) of pigment extracts was greatest (9.51 units) when 80% (v/v) ethanol was used as solvent. The polyphenol content was greatest when 40% (v/v) ethanol was used and tended to decrease with higher concentrations of ethanol. The TOD values were increased when citric or lactic acid was added to extracting solvents. Polyphenols were effectively extracted by solvent containing ascorbic acid. As the level of byproducts increased with different extraction procedures, TOD and polyphenol content of byproducts tended to decrease. More than 90% of anthocyanin pigments and polyphenols could be obtained using two extractions with 40% (v/v) ethanol.
