  • The purpose of this study was to examine the awareness of parents with preschoolers about multiple-intelligence education programs, the state of their multiple-intelligence education and their needs. This was done in an effort to provide information on the successful utilization of early childhood multiple-intelligence programs, as parents exercise a great influence on the development of early childhood multiple intelligences. The subjects in this study were 350 parents of preschoolers in six different kindergartens located in the city of Busan, on whom a survey was conducted. The findings of the study were as follows: first, as for the awareness of the parents of the preschoolers on multiple-intelligence education, they placed an importance on that education in general. Second, concerning the state of their multiple-intelligence education, there was a strong tendency for them to rely on early childhood education institutions and study aids produced by relevant companies to foster the strength of their children. Third, regarding a time for early childhood multiple- intelligence education, they considered it advisable for preschoolers to start to receive that education at the Western age of 2 to 7, and they preferred teachers who had a good understanding of the psychology and needs of preschoolers. The parents wanted their children to receive that education, and hoped to receive parent education about it.

  • The purpose of this study is to identify the social perception characteristics of young children with disabilities over the past decade. For this purpose, Textom, an Internet-based big data analysis system was used to collect data related to young children with disabilities posted on social media. 50 keywords were selected in the order of high frequency through the data cleaning process. For semantic network analysis, centrality analysis and CONCOR analysis were performed with UCINET6, and the analyzed data were visualized using NetDraw. As a result, the keywords such as 'education, needs, parents, and inclusion' ranked high in frequency, degree, and eigenvector centrality. In addition, the keywords of 'parent, teacher, problem, program, and counseling' ranked high in betweenness centrality. In CONCOR analysis, four clusters were formed centered on the keywords of 'disabilities, young child, diagnosis, and programs'. Based on these research results, the topics on social perception of young children with disabilities were investigated, and implications for each topic were discussed.

  • The purpose of this study was to understand children's negative attitudes exhibited towards peers with special needs in an inclusive kindergarten, utilizing ethnographic research methodology. The subjects consisted of 54 children undergoing typical development and three children with special needs in a public kindergarten in Busan metropolitan city. Data collection was conducted by means of participant observations and interviews took place from April until November, 2009. Our results revealed that the responses of 'not acknowledging presence', 'differentiating', 'adapting them to us', 'excluding at play' were major themes in children's negative attitudes exhibited towards peers with disabilities in an otherwise ostensibly inclusive kindergarten. The response of 'not acknowledging presence' was categorized as a way of ignoring their existence, whereas 'differentiating' was categorized as stressing difference, and assuring difference. There were two characteristics related to 'adapting them to us' : adapting them to our ways, adapting them to our knowledge. Concerning 'excluding from play', four characteristics were found : excluding indirectly, excluding directly, excluding illogically, and excluding by seeking majority accord. The implications of the findings for inclusive early childhood education were discussed.

  • Objective: This study was aimed to analyze the effects of activities using picture books for young children's language development and to identify factors that caused differences in these effects by applying meta-analysis. Methods: We conducted a homogeneity test of effect sizes on 21 Korean studies published in academic journals from 1990 to February 2018 and calculated the effect size by applying a random effect model. Additionally, we conducted a meta-ANOVA to investigate whether the effect sizes differed by types of language development, picture book activities, and environmental variables-such as place, time, and agent. Results: The results indicated that the effect sizes of the 21 studies were heterogeneous and the total effect size was 0.90, which was significantly large according to Cohen's standard. The effect sizes also varied by types of language development, picture book activities, and environmental variables. Conclusion/Implications: To increase the effects of activities using picture books for young children's language development, this study suggested the importance of picture book activities to be integrated with other play areas, teaching methods, and other print materials for the development of literacy abilities, and the link between home and early childhood education institutions.

  • The purpose of this study was to determine early childhood education(ECE) and early childhood special education(ECSE) teachers' perceptions of (a)important teacher competencies needed for working in inclusive early childhood programs and (b)current levels of these competencies. Sixty-two ECE teachers and 77 ECSE teachers responded to the survey developed for this study. There were no differences between the ECE teachers and ECSE teachers in the ratings of importance of the competency domains. However, the ECSE teachers had significantly higher perceptions than the ECE teachers of their self-proficiency on competencies related to child development, curriculum and instruction, assessment procedures, working with other adults, and professionalism. Both the ECE and ECSE teachers perceived the greatest need for further training in competencies related to assessment procedures and working with families and other adults.
