  • Background: This study investigatedthe factors influencing the degree of education in the Department of Dental Hygiene at K University on the degree of education required for a convergence major related to the medical device industry. Methods: For 5 days from December 5, 2023, 257 students of the Department of Dental Hygiene at a university in Wonju Citywere surveyed, and an online survey was conducted. General characteristics, school satisfaction, satisfaction with majors, perceptions of multi-majors in universities, and the degree of demand for a convergence major related to the medical device industry were examined. Since normality was not satisfied, non-parametric analysis was performed. To confirm the differences in convergence major related to medical device industry education needs according to general characteristics, the Mann-Whitney U test and Kruskal-Wallis test were performed. Post-hoc analysis was performed, and the median, minimum, and maximum values were presented. Multiple regression analysis was performed to confirm the effect on the demand for a convergence major related to the medical device industry, and the statistical significance probability was set at 0.05. Results: As a result of examining the factors affecting the demand for a convergence major related to the medical device industry, it was found that the more experience one has in completing a double major in college (p<0.05) and the higher the degree of satisfaction with the major (p<0.05), the statistically significant need for an interdisciplinary major was higher(p<0.05).

  • The objective of this research is to analyze geographical distribution of Korean dental hygienists to provide the geographical basis of supply-side policy for dental hygienists from the perspective of dental geography by using Geographic Information System (GIS) in which the choropleth map has been regarded as the most popular method. The present report is highly meaningful for the policy of dental hygienist on the supply side of dental care market. The data used in the article derive from the statistics-associated portal site provided by Korean government. It includes the statistics on general population, the regional numbers of dental hygiene students, county-based numbers of registered dental hygienists, dentists, and dental clinics and hospitals. Several maps are created by investigating these statistical data with GIS. This study is focused on the comparative analysis between entrants to the department of dental hygiene, registered acting dental hygienists and dentists in terms of county-based distribution per its population. The main result demonstrates that whereas about half of dental hygienists and dentists are respectively concentrated in Seoul and Gyung-gi, just one-fifth of entrants to the department of dental hygiene in the Seoul-metropolitan area. From the perspective of the supply-side policy of dental hygienists, the research argues that the creation or expansion of the department of dental hygiene does not directly meet social need for dental care services.

  • In this study, we surveyed the students enrolled in the dental hygiene program to identify how academic self-efficacy and subjective happiness affect academic resilience and, therefore, to help in guidance and adaptation to college life for dental hygiene students. We conducted the self-administered survey by randomized inclusion of dental hygiene students from Daejeon and South Chungcheong Province. A total of 175 students were finally analyzed. The study result showed that subjective happiness and academic self-efficacy were the factors that affected academic resilience and explanatory power accounting for 25.6%. This study has provided a foundational basis for the development of programs to enhance students' adaptation to college life by providing guidance for dental hygiene students and suggesting factors related to adaptation to college life.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the convergence factors affecting professional identity perceived by the emotional labor of clinical practice and self-esteem in some dental hygiene students. The questionnaire was conducted in 205 dental hygiene students from 3 university in Jeollanam-do area. The data were analyzed using SPSS 12.0. Professional identity correlated positively with self-esteem(r=0.366, p<0.01), negatively with emotional labor of clinical practice(r=-0.213, p<0.01). The convergence factors influencing professional identity were satisfaction level with majors(${\beta}=0.434$), self-esteem(${\beta}=0.236$) and emotional labor of clinical practice(${\beta}=-0.199$). The regression model explained 34.6% of professional identity. Therefore, to enhance professional identity in dental hygiene students, it is required to program development to improve satisfaction level of with majors, self-esteem and management of emotional labor of clinical practice.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to examine the perception of dental hospital accreditation and the awareness and practice of infection control in dental hygienists. Methods: A self-reported questionnaire was completed by 238 dental hygienists working at dental hospitals in Gwangju Jeonnam and analyzed from October 24, 2016 to September 22, 2017. Data were analyzed with the independent t-test, one-way analysis of variance, Pearson's correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences software, version 21.0. Results: Compared to non-accredited dental hospitals, all three variables were high for accredited dental hospitals. In accredited dental hospitals, healthcare accreditation expectancy effects correlated to awareness (r=0.407) and practice (r=0.533) of infection control, and awareness of infection control correlated to its practice (r=0.725). In non-accredited dental hospitals, healthcare accreditation expectancy effects correlated to awareness of infection control (r=0.239), and awareness of infection control correlated to its practice (r=0.481). Accredited dental hospitals showed healthcare accreditation expectancy effects (${\beta}=0.258$) and awareness of infection control (${\beta}=0.556$), and non-accredited dental hospitals were influenced by the number of employees (${\beta}=0.567$) and awareness of infection control (${\beta}=0.376$). Conclusions: It is necessary to develop efficient and systematic infection control programs to improve the awareness and practice of infection control in dental hygienists and patient's safety in the clinical field.

  • This study aimed to investigate the effects of work value and major satisfaction of dental hygiene students on career decision self-efficacy. A survey was conducted on dental hygiene students of a university in B area, and data were analyzed by using SPSS 24.0 and AMOS 24.0 program. The extrinsic work value had a positive effect on the career decision self-efficacy directly and a negative effect on the major satisfaction, a mediator. The intrinsic work value had a positive effect on the major satisfaction directly. Additionally, extrinsic and intrinsic work values had an indirect effect on career decision self-efficacy through major satisfaction. The results suggest that it is necessary to form desirable work values and increase the level of major satisfaction in order to improve career decision self-efficacy and could be used as fundamental data for setting a career and education direction of dental hygiene students.

Methods: From June 6 to July 24, 2021, a questionnaire survey was conducted among 214 dental hygienists via an online link. After questionnaire collection, IBM SPSS program (ver. 21.0; IBM Corp., Armonk, NY, USA) was used to conduct frequency analysis, t-test, one-way ANOVA and multiple regression analysis. Results: The significant and positive influential factors of dental hygienists' retention intention were married individuals (p=0.022), fewer working hours (p<0.001, p=0.007), good work environment (p=0.002), higher wages (p<0.001, p<0.001), higher education (p=0.032), and perception of rights in a mid-level (p=0.038). Conclusions: It is necessary to consider wages and welfare equivalent to dental hygienists' work intensity and workload. By regularly educating dental hygienists to increase their perception of rights, expanding an opportunity of participation, and improving their work environment, it will be possible to increase their retention intention and efficiently establish manpower in dental clinics.
