  • The purpose of this study was to identify the differences in classification skills shown in classification activities between the gifted and regular students in elementary schools. The subjects for the research consisted of six gifted students in an institute for the gifted for science annexed to P school district in Gangwon-do and 6 students at B and M general elementary schools. Results were as follows: The time taken for classification activities of the gifted was shorter than regular regardless of subjects for classifying. The number of standards for classifying for the gifted was more than regular students. Coefficient for measuring classification skills of the gifted was higher than regulars regardless of age. Consequently, there was a difference in the time taken for classifying and generating the number of standards and in a numerical index of classification activities performed at science classes between the science gifted and the regular students.

  • This study tried to investigate whether it is appropriate to define the emotions of elementary school teachers, who avoid teaching science, as science teaching anxiety through exploring elementary school teachers' emotional expressions and related factors. 10 elementary school teachers who were reluctant to teach science participated in the research, and they presented their thoughts and feelings about teaching science through semi-structured interviews. As a result of analyzing the emotional expressions in the interview, 28 expressions of emotions appeared. Emotional expressions were divided into three types according to the degree of inclusion of factors related to anticipation in related situations. These results show that there are some emotional expressions that cannot be interpreted as the science teaching anxiety. Therefore, we propose to consider science teaching avoidance emotion not as science teaching anxiety but as a mixture of various emotions.

  • This study analyzes the characteristic of elementary science-gifted education winner programs in Gifted Education Database (GED) focusing on scientific creativity. For this purpose, an analysis framework to analyze the programs was developed and a total of 840 inquiry activities from 55 winner programs were analyzed according to the analysis framework. The analysis of the results reveal that 'scientific inquiry skill' of the five scientific creativity components was most frequently included in the activities. 'Scientific knowledge content' and 'creative thinking' were also frequently included. However, 'problem solving ability' and 'common factor' were a little included. In the aspects of integration, the integrations between two or three components with five or eight types were frequently found. No integrations were also frequently included although less than the previous categories. The integrations among four with four types or five components were also slightly found. 'Scientific knowledge content', 'scientific inquiry skills', and 'creative thinking' with other components were more frequently found. However, the integrations of 'common factor' or 'problem solving ability' with the other components were less frequently found. Educational implications of these findings are discussed.

  • In this study, we investigated the characteristics of elementary school teachers' self-images of science teaching by using Draw-A-Science-Teacher-Test Checklist (DASTT-C). A survey was administered to 178 elementary school teachers in Seoul, Gyeonggi province, and Gangwon Province. It was found that elementary school teachers' self-images of science teaching for four science subjects (physics, chemistry, biology, and earth science) were more 'teacher-centered' than 'student-centered'. The results may imply that elementary school teachers' beliefs of science teaching tend to be more traditional than constructive. Therefore, there is a need to develop an effective education system for pre- and in-service elementary school teachers based on constructivism.

I apply it at early morning classes on elementary school students and analysis the responses of students to science communication activity. In order to achieve this goal, the review on preliminary studies and relevant documents were carried out and program called 'The aroma of science encountered in the forest of science' as the contents of daily life-centered theme that can be easily understood by students in elementary school was selected. Moreover, themes of total 15 episodes were determined by analyzing their contents. The materials were applied to science communication activity targeting 1 class with 21 students in second grade of elementary school. The survey on the responses toward the activity was conducted after the activity. The result of analyzing the survey, students displayed positive response toward science communication activity utilizing 'Science TV'. The result of the activity analysis and survey analysis after the activity displayed that students passionately participated in science communication activity utilizing 'Science TV' in early morning classes on elementary school. Also, students displayed positive response toward science communication activity utilizing 'Science TV' such as the increase in the understanding of science, and others.

  • This study explored the relationship between science academic passion, positive experience about science and scientific creativity in elementary science-gifted students. To do this, 108 science-gifted students from grades 3 to 6 were selected. After conducting the tests on their science academic passion, positive experience about science and scientific creativity, descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis were conducted. The results revealed that the students exhibited relatively high levels of science academic passion and positive experience about science, but their scientific creativity was not relatively high. While there was no statistically significant correlation between the overall science academic passion and scientific creativity, there was a significant negative correlation with scientific creativity in the aspect of 'obsessive passion' of the five subcategories ('importance', 'like', 'time/energy investment', 'harmonious passion', and 'obsessive passion'). Furthermore, the five subcategories, particularly 'like', 'harmonious passion', and 'obsessive passion' were statistically significant predictors of scientific creativity. However, the five subcategories of positive experience about science ('science academic emotion', 'science-related self-concept', 'science learning motivation', 'science-related career aspiration', and 'science-related attitude') did not exhibit statistically significant correlations with scientific creativity and did not had a significant influence on it. Additionally, neither the overall science academic passion nor the overall positive experience about science had a statistically significant effect on scientific creativity. Educational implications of these results were discussed.
