An Artificial Intelligence Education Program Development and Application for Elementary Teachers (초등 교사들을 위한 인공지능 교육 프로그램 개발 및 적용)

  • Rapid changes in the knowledge and information society of the 21st century should be embraced and applied to teachers. Since artificial intelligence(AI) is an important axis of rapid change, artificial intelligence education should be started from elementary school. This change requires elementary school teachers to have basic skills for AI education. In this study, an AI education program for elementary school teachers is developed. This development consists of three stages, the first stage is the understanding of artificial intelligence, the second stage is the understanding and application of artificial intelligence tools, and the final stage is the creation and application of artificial intelligence programs. 15 elementary school teachers were tested. The result of this study will be a useful educational program for teachers in charge of AI education in elementary school students.

  • 인공지능은 디지털 대전환 시대의 핵심적인 기술로 사회 전반에 변화를 주도하였다. 우리나라는 인공지능을 이해하고 이를 활용하는 역량을 길러주기 위해 전 국민을 대상으로 교육을 진행하고 있다. 그러나 초등학생 대상 인공지능 교육 프로그램은 체험 및 놀이 실습으로 한정되어 교육적 효과에 한계가 있다. 그러므로 본 연구에서는 생산적 실패를 활용하여 인공지능에 대한 개념적 이해 및 실생활 전이를 촉진하는 교육 프로그램을 개발하였다. 연구 대상은 초등학교 5~6학년이며 2022 개정 교육과정에서 강조하는 자기 주도적 학습 역량과 실생활 연계 교육을 반영하여 설계한 6차시 분량의 프로그램이다. 본 연구에서 개발한 교육 프로그램은 향후 타당성 및 신뢰도 검증을 거쳐 현장에 적용하는 후속 연구로 이어질 것이다.

Development of the Content Framework for Elementary Artificial Intelligence Literacy Education (초등학생의 인공지능 소양을 기르기 위한 내용체계 개발)

  • As artificial intelligence(AI) education becomes essential in elementary schools with the revised 2022 curriculum, it is necessary to develop an AI curriculum for elementary school students. In this study, I developed the AI content framework to cultivate AI literacy of elementary school students. AI education areas were largely divided into AI understanding and AI development, and detailed areas were divided into eight categories: using of AI, impact of AI, AI ethics, recognition of AI, data expression, data exploring, learning of AI, and prediction of AI. In addition, twice expert Delphi surveys were conducted to verify the validity of the subject elements and achievement standards for each area. The final draft was finalized after reflecting expert opinions on the AI education content framework. In order for AI education to be expanded in elementary schools in the future, continuous research is needed, such as developing textbooks and teaching tools according based on the AI framework proposed in this study, securing the lesson hours to apply them to schools, and correcting and supplementing the problems of them.

  • 정부의 인공지능 국가전략을 통해 인공지능 교육은 초등학교에서도 필수교육으로 대두되고 있다. 또한 인공지능 소양을 습득하기 위해 타 교과와 융합한 인공지능 융합 교육의 필요성이 증가하고 있고, 인공지능 발달에 대한 수학의 역할을 고려하여 수학 교과를 통해 인공지능의 이해를 기르는 것이 강조되고 있다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 수학 교과와 인공지능 교과가 융합한 인공지능 융합 교육 프로그램을 개발하기 위해 초등학교 3~4학년 수학 교과의 도형 분류를 의사 결정 나무 모델을 활용하여 가르치는 인공지능 융합 교육 프로그램을 개발하였다. 본 연구를 통해 개발된 프로그램은 초등학생의 인공지능 개념학습을 통한 인공지능 기초소양 함양뿐만 아니라 수학 교과의 이해 및 성취도 향상에 도움이 될 것으로 기대된다.

  • The need for artificial intelligence education has emerged, and countries around the world are announcing artificial intelligence strategies. Artificial intelligence education is reflected in the main points of the 2022 revised curriculum general published in Korea. Along with this interest, programs related to artificial intelligence education are being developed, but it is difficult to find artificial intelligence programs for lower grades of elementary school. This study aims to develop a data collection education program for the lower grades of elementary school through a series of analysis-design-development-application-evaluation processes and apply it to first-grade elementary school students to verify its effectiveness. Through the developed program, it is expected that students will be able to understand and feel interested in artificial intelligence, and develop an attitude of collecting data in their daily lives through the process of searching for various types of data in their daily lives.

  • In the era of the fourth industrial revolution, the importance of artificial intelligence(AI) is growing day by day, and there is no disagreement that AI education will bring great innovation in the future. Various attempts are being made to educate the topic of AI, but students who have no experience in AI education recognize AI only as a difficult target. Therefore, in this study, we analyze the changes in students' perception of AI by teaching them using AI. AI convergence education were conducted for 6th grade elementary school students, and pre and post tests were conducted in the form of AI awareness survey questionnaires which included questions such as interest in AI, changes brought by AI, and AI education. As a result, we confirm significant results that suggest the level of awareness of AI has improved through AI education in all factors. AI convergence education requires various AI convergence education programs as a form of education for social needs and future students, and hopefully a design based on this will help realize student centered education.

  • Much of our lives are closely related to artificial intelligence, and society is changing more rapidly. Reflecting this era, the need for artificial intelligence education has emerged and various learning methods have been proposed, but guidance on artificial intelligence teaching and learning activities for lower grades elementary school students is insufficient. Therefore, in this study, the data collection education program for the lower grades of elementary school was developed based on the contents standards of the Korea Foundation for the Advancement of Science & Creativity. Focusing on the principles of artificial intelligence and the detailed data area of the utilization area, the focus was on expressing numbers and letters in various ways, such as colors and pictures, and finding various types of data in life to learn the principles of artificial intelligence. Through this program, it is expected that lower-grade elementary school students will be able to understand the importance of data collection in artificial intelligence through the process of knowing about data and collecting sound, picture, and text data.

  • With the development of artificial intelligence, society is moving to a different world. As a result, amid growing interest in artificial intelligence education, research on how to teach artificial intelligence is also being conducted more actively in Korea. However, a lot of research is being conducted around the upper grades of elementary school, and curriculum and programs for the lower grades are insufficient. Therefore, this study developed an artificial intelligence program for lower grades. Among them, it was developed focusing on artificial intelligence image recognition. It compares image recognition methods of people, animals, and computers, identifies the characteristics of fallen leaves, and helps them understand the image recognition process of artificial intelligence by classifying them according to the characteristics of fallen leaves. I hope this program will help elementary school students understand the image recognition principle of artificial intelligence in the future.

  • The interest in artificial intelligence education in education is also high based on recent social interest in artificial intelligence. Accordingly, Korea is preparing a foothold for revitalizing artificial intelligence education in the future, such as announcing an artificial intelligence education plan by expanding from software (SW) education that has become a regular curriculum after the 2015 revised curriculum, and various studies are being conducted. However, research on the curriculum related to what and how to educate in artificial intelligence education is still in its infancy and further research is needed. A look at related research shows many similarities and differences in research related to domestic and foreign AI curriculum, because there are differences in the areas and content elements that each research focuses on. Therefore, in this study, in preparation for the future independence of the information subject and the formalization of AI education, literature studies on domestic and foreign AI curriculum are conducted, and based on this, the direction of the curriculum composition for elementary school AI education is to be explored.

Development and Application of AI Education Program for Image Recognition for Low Grade Elementary School Students (초등학교 저학년을 위한 이미지 인식 이해 AI 교육 프로그램 개발 및 적용)

  • With the development of artificial intelligence, society is moving toward another world that has never existed before. As a result, interest in artificial intelligence education is also increasing, and research on artificial intelligence education is being conducted more actively in Korea. However, many studies have been conducted focusing on the upper grades of elementary school, and curriculum and programs for the lower grades are still insufficient. Therefore, in this study, a total of 6 sessions of artificial intelligence programs were developed to understand image recognition for the lower grades of elementary school. The validity was secured by conducting expert validity for 8 experts, and the effectiveness was verified through the pre-post-response sample t-test by applying it to the experimental group. As a result, both artificial intelligence understanding and artificial intelligence attitude showed statistically significant results, and both the interest and difficulty of educational programs were found to be suitable for lower grade students. Based on the contents of this study, it is necessary to review its application and effectiveness in various environments through follow-up studies in the future.
