Relationship between Science Academic Passion, Positive Experience about Science and Scientific Creativity in Elementary Science-Gifted Students (초등 과학영재 학생의 과학 학업 열정 및 과학 긍정 경험과 과학적 창의성의 관계)

  • This study explored the relationship between science academic passion, positive experience about science and scientific creativity in elementary science-gifted students. To do this, 108 science-gifted students from grades 3 to 6 were selected. After conducting the tests on their science academic passion, positive experience about science and scientific creativity, descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis were conducted. The results revealed that the students exhibited relatively high levels of science academic passion and positive experience about science, but their scientific creativity was not relatively high. While there was no statistically significant correlation between the overall science academic passion and scientific creativity, there was a significant negative correlation with scientific creativity in the aspect of 'obsessive passion' of the five subcategories ('importance', 'like', 'time/energy investment', 'harmonious passion', and 'obsessive passion'). Furthermore, the five subcategories, particularly 'like', 'harmonious passion', and 'obsessive passion' were statistically significant predictors of scientific creativity. However, the five subcategories of positive experience about science ('science academic emotion', 'science-related self-concept', 'science learning motivation', 'science-related career aspiration', and 'science-related attitude') did not exhibit statistically significant correlations with scientific creativity and did not had a significant influence on it. Additionally, neither the overall science academic passion nor the overall positive experience about science had a statistically significant effect on scientific creativity. Educational implications of these results were discussed.

Applications for Self-Regulating Learning Strategy to Quantitative Relationships in Chemical Reaction (탐구실험 수업에 자기조절학습 전략을 적용: 학업성취도 및 과학적 태도에 대한 효과)

  • Using self-regulation learning strategies that can cultivate the creative and critical thinking required in the era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, it was applied to the exploration experimental class of the section 'quantitative relationship in chemical reactions' in high school chemistry and the effects on academic performance and scientific attitudes were analyzed. In case of academic achievement, although there was no meaningful difference between the two groups in the pre-test, the average value of the experimental group was significantly higher in the post-test. In the case of scientific attitudes, the difference in average points between the two groups was the greatest in readiness and curiosity. In the post-test of the experimental group, academic achievement showed the highest correlation with meta-cognition and scientific attitude with behavioral regulation, respectively. Considering the effectiveness of metacognition and scientific attitudes, self-regulation learning strategies are the most suitable teaching-learning forms for creativity and personality education in this era.

The Effect of SSC(Small-Scale Chemistry) Lab Program on Scientifically Gifted Students' Scientific Attitude, Creative Personality Characteristics and Science Inquiry Skills (SSC(Small-Scale Chemistry)실험이 과학영재의 과학적 태도, 창의적 성격 특성 및 과학탐구 능력에 미치는 효과)

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of SSC(Small-Scale Chemistry) lab program applying to scientifically gifted students' classes. The participants were 15 the middle school scientifically gifted students selected and enrolled in science-gifted education center of university. SSC lab program was applied for 3 month with 5 topics. The research design was one group pretest-posttest design, the data were analyzed using the PASW 18 statistics program. The results of this study were as follows: First, the scientific attitude of scientifically gifted students was improved significantly(p<.01) after applying SSC lab program. Especially, there were significant difference between pre-test and post-test in the scores of cooperativity, spontaneity, perseverance, which were the sub-region of scientific attitude. Second, the creative personality characteristics of scientifically gifted students showed statistically significant improvements(p<.01) after applying SSC lab program. Especially, there was significant difference between pre-test and post-test in the scores of adhesion, which was a sub-region of the creative personality characteristics. Third, there were no significant differences in the science inquiry skills between before and after applying the SSC lab program in the scientifically gifted students' classes(p>.05). The results suggest that SSC Lab program is an effective program in scientifically gifted students' classes.

Effects of Science Lessons with Educational Game Content on the Science-related Attitudes of Elementary Students: Focusing on Games for Learning the Domains of Motion and Energy (교육용 게임 콘텐츠를 활용한 과학 학습이 초등학생들의 과학 관련 태도에 미치는 영향 - 운동과 에너지 영역을 학습할 수 있는 게임을 중심으로 -)

  • This study aimed to evaluate the effects of utilizing educational game content for science learning on science-related attitudes. The content was applied to 24 students in an after-school science club at an elementary school in Gyeongsangbuk-do Province followed by a pre and posttest analysis using the Attitude About the Relevance of Science Test and the Creative Personality Test. This study used Tino's Journey, which was developed by the Korea Creative Content Agency and is currently distributed for free through the Ministry of Education to develop nine lessons that include scientific scenarios and concepts presented in the game. The results demonstrated that science lessons utilizing educational game content significantly influenced the science-related attitudes of the students. Among the subdomains, enjoyment of science lessons increased the most followed by the attitude toward scientific inquiry, social meaning of science, and hobby of science. However, the commonness of scientists, acceptance of scientific attitudes, and career in science did not reveal significant differences. This study classified the students into two groups (i.e., high and low, n=12 each) using the Creative Personality Test in advance. This study performed covariate analysis with the score for pre-science-related attitude as the covariate. Result revealed that the scores for science-related attitude significantly differed between the high and low groups. Specifically, the increase in the scores of the low group was larger than that of the high group. Lastly, the study presented implications for the utilization of educational game content in science learning.

A Study of Relationship between the Young Children's Playfulness, Creativity and Behavioral Problems (유아의 놀이성 및 창의적 성격특성과 문제행동간의 관계)

  • The purpose of this study is to see how young children's playfulness and ability to creatively problem solve can affect their behavior. young children's playfulness in creases with in creasing creativity and personality traits and behavioral problems decrease with increasing of playfulness. Young children's behavioral problems increase with increasing of creative personality traits. In addition, young children's playfulness and creative personality characteristics affect their behavioral problems. The impact on the behavioral problems with variables for playfulness and creative personality traits has a negative correlation with creative curiosity, a sense of humor and expression of fun. The cognitive and physical spontaneity of the playfulness are correlated positively to young children's behavioral problems.

The Effects of Portfolio Instruction on the Creativity and Scientific Inquiry Ability of Students in Elementary Science Classroom (초등 과학 수업에서 포트폴리오 수업이 학생들의 창의성과 과학 탐구능력에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of portfolio instruction on the creativity and scientific inquiry ability of 6th-grade students in science classroom. Four classes were sampled from an urban elementary school in southern part of Seoul. Two classes were assigned to experimental group and the other two classes to control group. Portfolio instruction was administered to the experimental group for 10 weeks, and traditional instruction to the control group. Data on students' creativity and scientific inquiry ability were collected prior to and after the treatment for both groups. Students' perception on portfolio instruction was investigated with experimental group after the treatment. The results of this study are as follows: (1) Portfolio instruction had a significant positive effect on creativity; (2) Students' originality, one of sub-domain of creativity, showed marked increase after portfolio instruction; (3) Portfolio instruction had a significant positive effect on scientific inquiry ability; (4) Integrated inquiry ability, a sub-domain of inquiry ability, improved meaningfully after portfolio instruction; and (4) Students' perception on portfolio instruction is very positive.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of multiple intelligences-specific observation strategy on observation skills, achievement and scientific attitude in elementary science class For this study, the observation learning for the multiple intelligences-specific observation strategy was applied to elementary science class. The results of this study were as follows: To examine this learning materials were applied to elementary science curriculum, and an experimental group and a control group were selected from 4th graders at elementary school J located in Incheon. The results of this study were as follows.: 1. this study was found statistically significant difference in the pupil's enhancement of the observation ability(p<.05). Specifically, analysis of elements of the observation abilities, it was effective to increase abilities of classification of statements, qualitative observation and quantitative observation. 2. science academic achievement of the group using this developed program was significantly higher compared with a control group. 3. there weren't differences between the comparison and experimental groups in term of the scientific attitude. But the experimental group showed greater increases in the openness, spontaneity and creativity that are the elements of scientific attitude. In conclusion, the Multiple Intelligences Observation Training was useful to develop the elementary school student's the observation ability, science academic achievement, scientific attitude(openness, spontaneity and creativity) and better be widely applied to science education.

  • 지구과학 분야에서 가장 어렵게 느껴지는 내용인 천문분야는 다른 과학 분야와 달리 탐구 대상이 천체들이 먼거리에 있고, 쉽게 관측하기 어려우며, 실험실에서 동일실험과 반복 실험이 불가능하여, 추상적이고 직접 관측하기 어려운 개념에 관한 연구들이 많다. 따라서 이 연구에서는 레이저 커팅기를 사용해 지구과학교과 중 별자리를 구성하는 별들의 상대적 거리를 수학적으로 계산하는 과정과 고등학교 물리교과 중 LED 광원의 원리를 알고 LED 모듈을 제작하여 최종적으로 아름답고 과학적으로 가치가 있는 입체 별자리 교구를 제작하는 형태의 STEAM 교육 프로그램을 개발하고 시범학교 적용을 하였다. 이에 지능정보화 사회에 발맞춰 천문학 지식을 창의 교육의 형태로 교육하는 새로운 교육법을 실현한 연구결과들을 발표하고자 한다. 또한 개발한 프로그램의 효과성을 검증하기 위해 STEAM 관련 태도 검사와 논리적 사고력 검사 및 만족도 검사를 실시하였다. 연구결과 개발된 프로그램이 STEAM 태도 검사와 논리적 사고력에 효과가 있는 것으로 나타났으며, 천문수업에 대한 학생들의 인식은 긍정적이었다. 따라서 후속 연구에서는 다양한 학년 및 위계에 맞는 프로그램의 개발과 다양한 지역 등의 현장 적용을 통한 연구가 진행되어야 할 것으로 판단된다.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of 3D PRINTING and physical education central STEAM program on the subject interest and creative attitude of middle school students. In order to achieve this purpose, this research collected data from two different groups; a control group (n=98) and a comparison group (n=101) who are attending middle schools located in Gyeonggi-do. The exploratory factor analysis, reliability analysis, independent t-test and paired t-test were conducted by the IBM SPSS 20.0 program. The results are as follows; First, physical education central STEAM utilizing 3D PRINTING is efficient in the subject interest. Second, physical education central STEAM utilizing 3D PRINTING is efficient in the creative attitude.

  • This research aims at executing a after reading activity using book trailers for the teenagers, and verifying its effects. For the investigation into its effectiveness, 6 classes on the first grade in a middle school were divided into 3 classes of an experimental group (104 students) and the other 3 classes of a comparative group (100 students), and a preliminary and a post test were conducted using the measurement tool on creativity and reading attitudes. As the result, the creativity, reading attitudes and understanding of the selected books of the experimental group were found to be better than those of the comparative group.
