Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify relationships among self-esteem, social support, nursing organizational culture, experience of workplace bullying, and the consequences of workplace bullying in hospital nurses, and then to provide basic information for developing workplace bullying prevention programs. Methods: Participants were 122 hospital nurses from three general hospitals. Data collection was done during April and May 2015. Data were collected using self-report questionnaires which were used to identify participants' characteristics, self-esteem, social support, nursing organizational culture, and workplace bullying. Results: Approximately one quarter of the nurses had experienced workplace bullying in the past six months. Hierarchical regression analysis showed that experience of workplace bullying (${\beta}=.45$) and self-esteem (${\beta}=-.31$) explained 53.3% of the variance in consequences of workplace bullying. Conclusion: Based on the findings that experiencing workplace bullying and having a low self-esteem were likely to increase workplace bullying in hospital nurses, there is a need to develop prevention and intervention programs on avoiding or dealing with workplace bullying.
Purpose: This study was conducted to determine the mediator effect of social support in the association between stress for college life and depression among nursing students. Methods: The participants of the study were 201 university students in A and C cities. Self-report questionnaires were used to measure the variables. In the data analysis, the SPSSWIN 25.0 program was utilized for descriptive statistics, Pearson's correlation, Sobel test and multiple regression analysis. Results: Mean scores of stress for college life, depression and social support were 2.56, 4.12 and 0.61, respectively. Stress for college life and depression showed a significant positive correlation (r=.60, p<.001), while depression and social support showed a significant negative correlation (r=-.46, p<.001). Lastly, stress for college life and social support showed a significant negative correlation (r=-.55, p<.001). The analysis of the mediator effect of social support in the association between stress for college life and depression showed that social support had a significant mediator effect. Conclusion: Among nursing students, social support may be a mediator in the association between stress for college life and depression. Therefore, strategies for nursing intervention to improve social support should be developed for nursing students.
Purpose: This study investigated the factors influencing the risk of relapse in community-dwelling adults with alcohol use disorder. Methods: This study included 122 community-dwelling individuals with alcohol use disorder who were receiving outpatient treatment at a mental health treatment hospital or were enrolled in a treatment program at the Community Addition Management Center in Gyeonggi Province. Data were collected using self-administered questionnaires from July to August 2020. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, independent t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and multiple regression analysis using SPSS 25.0. Results: Abstinence self-efficacy (𝛽=-.56, p<.001), social support (𝛽=-.35, p=.009), female sex (𝛽=11.29, p=.015), and a family history of alcoholism (𝛽=9.41, p=.026) were significant predictors of relapse risk, accounting for 56% of the variance (F=12.68, p<.001). Conclusion: The findings of this study suggest that abstinence self-efficacy and social support are pivotal in reducing risk of relapse in individuals with alcohol use disorder. Therefore, relevant and effective interventions focusing on enhancing abstinence self-efficacy and social support are required.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the effects of nursing work environment and social support on the reality shock of new graduate nurses in university hospitals. Methods: The subjects were 153 new graduate nurses with less than 12 months of clinical experience at two university hospitals in the G province, and data were collected from September 15 to October 7, 2020. Data were analyzed using the SPSS/WIN 26.0 program for frequency, average, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficient, multiple regression. Results: Factors influencing reality shock were nursing work environment (β=-.39, p<.001) and social support (β=-.25, p=.002), and gender (female) (β=.20, p=.001), and the explanatory power was 44.8% (F=9.99, p=.002). Conclusion: Our study shows that nursing work environment and social support play an important role in the reality shock of new graduate nurses. It is important to strengthen nursing work environment and social support to alleviate the reality shock of new graduate nurses. The findings of this study may serve as a basis for developing strategies for mitigating the reality shock of new graduate nurses.
Purpose: This study aimed to identify the factors influencing job satisfaction among peer support workers who assist individuals with mental disorders. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study design was used. The participants included 134 peer support workers who were active in the community. Data were collected using self-administered questionnaires between April 22 and June 5, 2024. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, independent t-tests, one-way ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and multiple regression analysis using SPSS 26.0. Results: The results indicated that psychological empowerment (β=.62; p<.001) and perceived stigma (β=-.17; p=.011) were significant influencing factors influencing job satisfaction. The regression model accounted for 53.6% of the variance in job satisfaction (F=52.17; p<.001). Conclusion: The findings of this study suggest that psychological empowerment and perceived stigma are important determinants of job satisfaction among peer support workers for individuals with mental illness. Therefore, interventions that enhance psychological empowerment and reduce perceived stigma are essential to improving job satisfaction for these peer support workers.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the predictors of Organizational Citizenship Behavior (OCB) among hospital nurses. Methods: Participants in this study were 231 nurses from two hospitals. The self-reported questionnaire was used to assess the level of self-efficacy, social support and OCB. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson's correlation coefficient, t-test, ANOVA and multiple regression. Results: The mean score of OCB was 4.82, self-efficacy was 4.65, and social support was 4.56. The OCB was statistically significant according to position (t=-1.97, p=.049). The OCB was positively correlated with self-efficacy (r=.558, p<.001) and social support (r=.245, p<.001). The self-efficacy and social support explained 33.0% of the variance for OCB. Conclusion: The findings suggest that developing programs to improve self-efficacy and social support might be useful. Furthermore, more studies are needed to explore variables that influence nurses' Organizational Citizenship Behavior.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the mediating effect of perceived appraisal support between neuroticism and occupational stress in firefighters. Methods: The subjects of this study were 156 firefighters who worked at three fire stations in G province in Korea. The collected data were analyzed by t-test, ANOVA, and multiple regression analysis using Baron and Kenny's method for mediation. Results: There were significant relationships between neuroticism and perceived appraisal support (r=.30, p<.001), neuroticism and occupational stress (r=.42, p<.001), and perceived appraisal support and occupational stress (r=.36, p<.001). Perceived appraisal support showed partial mediating effects in the relationship between neuroticism and occupational stress. Conclusion: The impact of neuroticism in firefighters was mediated by perceived appraisal support for occupational stress. This suggests that strategies for enhancing perceived appraisal support in fire fighters should be considered when developing neuroticism management interventions for decreasing their occupational stress.
