Design and Prototype Implementation of a Smartphone Functional Application for Learning Chinese Language (중국어 학습을 위한 스마트폰 기능성 어플리케이션 설계 및 프로토타입 구현)

  • Recently Chinese education market and social interest has been extended. Accordingly, smart learning based on smartphone applications became part of new educational paradigm. Also, there are more active research and development of applications for the Chinese language education. In this paper, we designed and implemented the smartphone functional application prototype for learning basic Chinese characters. Expression of Chinese characters, the comparison, listening in pronunciation, voice recording and listening, related content learning, and implement testing presented using casual user interface. In the future study, we will develop the prototype with user interface for learning Chinese conversation and individual index of evaluation can be effective learning Instrument without additional tools.

  • The main purpose of this study is to reveal the educational value of the Chinese drama and present a concrete and feasible Chinese speaking teaching-learning programme targeted at intermediate level Chinese learners through storytelling and role-play. There is some advice for Chinese speaking teaching-learning by using Chinese dramas. Firstly, applying various techniques actively such as storytelling and role play, not only could it help to correct Chinese speaking pronunciation, but it could also help students to make up and express their ideas as free as possible. Secondly, it's necessary to accord with the teaching objectives of Chinese speaking, students' actual level and requirements to select Chinese dramas as Chinese speaking teaching-learning materials. Thirdly, it's noteworthy that teachers should select Chinese dramas with various genres or theme according to social development to promote the fun of class and maximize the educational value of Chinese dramas as teaching-learning materials.

  • This study aims to figure out what kind of competences Chinese teachers need when teaching foreigners Chinese and if there is a difference between the importance degree they cognise and the practical level they keep, which could help to indicate improving directions of teachers' cultivation and training. To achieve this purpose, we chose 56 in-service Chinese teachers in Q City, Shandong Province, China as the subject of investigation. As results of this study, about the importance degree of competences of teaching foreigners Chinese, the average score is pretty high, which could assure the competences Chinese teachers need, but as for practical level, the average score is relatively low, which could help to assure the improving directions. In conclusion, competences of teaching foreigners can be divided into knowledge, skill and attitude. To improve the practical level of Chinese teachers, it's necessary to attach more importance to Chinese culture, methods of language education, cross-cultural adaptation, research on teaching and so on in Chinese teachers' cultivation and training programs.

  • As ubiquitous computing is evolving, RFID/USN technology is largely applied to various fields. Although there has been much research on the improvement of educational environment using RFID/USN technology, there has been little research on the learning improvement using it. So, in this paper, we used RFID/USN technology to find out the location and situation of students for Chinese situation learning system. We developed a mobile RFID middleware for Chinese situation learning system reflecting Chinese characteristics compared with English on PDA. In USN environment, we designed a USN system, which gets the situation information through a sensor network with sensors and sends them for helping learners study in situation learning. We took a pilot test to a small group for the analysis of the system.

  • When Chinese character used in Korea, so did the characters' pronunciation, so many Korean Chinese characters today have similar pronunciation with Chinese, but since Korean and Chinese pronunciations were preserved and developed in different alphabets, the written letter of the pronunciation also differs. This study on Chinese education, has constructed and implemented an easy way to study Chinese pronunciations by creating conversion rule set between Chinese pronunciation, Chinese Hanyu latin Pinyin and Korean chinese character pronunciation consisting of an initial sound, a medial vowel, and a final consonant. This study has established web version and application version of this conversion rule set education system to enhance Chinese education.

  • 유비쿼터스의 핵심기술인 RFID(Radio Frequency Identification)가 물류, 유통, 교통, 의료 등 다양한 분야에 적용한 연구가 많이 있어 왔지만, RFID를 교육에 적용한 연구는 미미한 편이다. 이에 본 논문은 RFID/USN 기술을 이용하여 학습자의 위치와 상황을 인지하고 그에 부합하는 중국어 상황 학습 시스템을 제안한다. 영어에 비해 중국어가 가지고 있는 특징을 반영한 RFID 미들웨어는 PDA 기반에서 동작하는 모바일 RFID 미들웨어로 중국어 상황 학습에 적합하도록 개발되었다.

Perception and production of Mandarin lexical tones in Korean learners of Mandarin Chinese (중국어를 학습하는 한국어 모국어 화자의 중국어 성조 지각과 산출)

  • Non-tonal language speakers may have difficulty learning second language lexical tones. In the present study, we explored this issue with Korean-speaking learners of Mandarin Chinese (i.e., non-tonal first language speakers) by examining their perception and production of Mandarin lexical tones. In the perception experiment, the Korean learners were asked to listen to the tone of each stimulus and assign it to one of four Mandarin lexical tones using the response keys; in the production experiment, the learners provided speech production data for the lexical tones and then their productions were identified by native listeners of Mandarin Chinese. Our results showed that the Korean learners of Mandarin Chinese had difficulty in perceptually distinguishing Tone 2 and Tone 3, with the most frequent production error being the mispronunciation of Tone 3 as Tone 2. We also investigated whether unfamiliar non-native phonemes (i.e., Chinese phonemes) that do not exist in the native language phonemic inventory (i.e., Korean) may hinder the processing of the non-native lexical tones. We found no evidence for such effects, neither for the perception nor for the production of the tones.

  • This study divided video content of current representative YouTube channels on Chinese language education into internal and external elements for analysis. By examining these channels, this study found that they have various external and internal elements. In addition, YouTube classes also have certain distinct characteristics that are non-existent in traditional classroom or face-to-face classes, and show potential to serve as a new educational medium that can fill the gaps in existing classroom classes. However, a large number of these channels still have problems with their internal and external elements, which seem to require not only the effort and attention of the instructors creating the videos, but also considerable time and human and material resources.

  • 중국어의 품사 태깅(part-of-speech tagging)을 위해서는 중국어 문장들은 내부 단어간의 명확한 분리가 없기 때문에 단어 분할(word segmentation)과 품사 태깅을 동시에 처리해야 한다. 본 논문은 규칙 기반(rule base)과 사전 기반(dictionary base) 기법을 혼합하여 구현한 단어 분할 시스템을 사용하여 입력 문장을 단어 단위로 분할하고, HMM(hidden Markov model) 기반 통계적 품사 태깅 기법을 사용한다. 특히, 본 논문에서는 주어진 말뭉치(corpus)로부터 자동 학습(automatic training)을 통해 품사 사전을 구축하여 구현된 시스템과 말뭉치간의 독립성을 유지한다. 말뭉치는 중국어 간체와 번체 모두를 대상으로 하고, 각 말뭉치로부터 자동 학습을 통해 얻어진 품사 사전으로 단어 분할과 품사 태깅을 한다. 실험결과들은 간체, 번체 각각의 단어 분할 성능과 품사 태깅 성능을 보여준다.

Interaction of native language interference and universal language interference on L2 intonation acquisition: Focusing on the pitch range variation (L2 억양에서 나타나는 모국어 간섭과 언어 보편적 간섭현상의 상호작용: 피치대역을 중심으로)

  • In this study, we examined the interactive aspects between pitch reduction phenomena considered a universal language phenomenon and native language interference in the production of L2 intonation performed by Chinese learners of Korean. To investigate their interaction, we conducted an acoustic analysis using acoustic measures such as pitch span, pitch level, pitch dynamic quotient, skewness, and kurtosis. In addition, the correlation between text comprehension and pitch was examined. The analyzed material consisted of four Korean discourses containing five and seven sentences of varying difficulty. Seven Korean native speakers and thirty Chinese learners who differed in their Korean proficiency participated in the production test. The results, for differences by language, showed that Chinese had a more expanded pitch span, and a higher pitch level than Korean. The analysis between groups showed that at the beginner and intermediate levels, pitch reduction was prominent, i.e., their Korean was characterized by a compressed pitch span, low pitch level, and less sentence internal pitch variation. Contrariwise, the pitch use of advanced speakers was most similar to Korean native speakers. There was no significant correlation between text difficulty and pitch use. Through this study, we observed that pitch reduction was more pronounced than native language interference in the phonetic layer.
